Hashima Island used to be the most densely populated city in Japan, but it is now abandoned. What do you think about this research team's efforts in preserving the buildings?
Sourav Singh when Japan switched from coal to oil, they closed the coal mine on this island in a few weeks & left within month. Some say it was the most densely populated place on earth & one of the first concrete building in the eastern hemisphere was also built there - the school building, if I'm right.
Should've really provided some history/backstory as to what the purpose of the island was and what really went on there. Disappointed that there was no mention of that whatsoever. Even if this was meant to be a preview, I feel like that should've been mentioned, maybe even out of respect.
I'm well aware. I was referring to National Geographic providing the history themselves, especially considering the premise and importance of the backstory.
nchle Yeah they have so conveniently left out that part, telling this from the Japanese side, making it all mysterious but hiding away the truth which is so gruesome.
Before WWII, this island lived by miner. When Imperial Japan colonize Korea, They did forced labor under harsh conditions to many korean with other colonized country peoples. They worked on Coal mine. and between 1925 to 1945, 1295 peoples died. Simply this island is Japanese Auschwitz. Just different thing was Auschwitz used for genocide and this island used for forced labor.
Great point. We should never forget. Japan is now trying to hide it and make this place as a historical site to celebrate their economical development. History should never be forget
Hoyun Team: i agree with your comment. Japanese Imperial Military were very harsh and cruel. I believe that Japan should take responsibility for What they did prior to WW II and WW II. Germany teaches what happened during Hitlers time in power (genocide and WW II) and I believe this was good for their people and the younger generations that followed after WW II and for everyone else. That said I am very fond of Japan and the Japanese people and have visited Japan many times. We are not guilty for out forefathers Sins. We need to be able to forgive but still remember. It's sad that after all that happened during this period of time we haven't learned to stop war and get along as human beings
Hoyun Team MAVIC I agree and I live in Germany as an half Iraqi and half polish and must say so far from what I have witnessed the Japanese have very similar cultural mentalities or maybe we can call them tendencies, very harsh, very monetary driven even within family members which I find very disturbing at times, this bureaucratic way of treating family members like everyone can be replaced is not good for the human race ..... I must add of course not all Germans or Japanese are like that, it is just a small observation I witnessed just like I’m sure many people have seen bad Arabs and bad polish people 😆
Gosh korean, arent you feel tired of whinning all around the internet about Japan ? I ve never seen Indonesian, Malaysian and Singaporean whinning about Japan as sick as korean. Grow up please
This could be a very interesting historical site for visitors to someday visit if the foundations can be maintained. Hopefully, the people researching the integrity of the buildings are safe. Thanks for sharing National Geographic.
There are actually public tours but at the moment you can only see 15% of it. The rest is too dangerous for the public to get close to but soon they are extending the walk-ways. The boat ride around the island though gives a great view of the rest though 👍🏻
@@rosasoiwerpuffgirls5806while I agree it’s outrageous the tours don’t go into the forced labor employed there, I don’t think this disqualifies it for tourists. It’s important to remember the bad parts of history, too
reyvull Basically, during the World War II, Japanese imprisoned Koreans in that island, after the war was over, they killed those captured Koreans. To get a better image of this in your mind and better understandings, I suggest that you consider watching a Korean movie called “Battleship Island” it’s a great movie and explains everything that the Japanese had done during the WW2.
I was on the boat tour from Nagasaki Japan to this island last year. It was a very clear day but unfortunately our boat could not be moored to the pier of this island as the tide was in. Anyway, I still would like to visit there again.
So I've watched a Korean variety show called Infinite Challenge (no.1 variety show) that showcased this island. The Japanese had tour guides showing people around this island etc. etc, without mentioning the fact that they had Korean slave labourers working till death.
Gunkanjima (軍艦島) is seriously a sight to behold. When taking a boat around the island, you can’t believe that so many people lived there. If you get the chance to visit Japan, I highly encourage you to take the tour. But try to wait for the newest upgrade of the tour area because at the moment you can only see about 15% of the island up close. The buildings are considered too dangerous for the public. Also, learn the history before you go. It definitely adds to the experience especially if you can’t understand Japanese fluently. I don’t recall English-speaking tour guides during the times I visited.
It's historical site that should be maintained. People should watch korean movie titled " battleship island" to know why people left the island. It's sad story how power abuse mankind

There is a korean movie called Battleship Island based in real events and tells us how people lived in this Island and how they suffered abuse at the hands of Japanese people.
Japanese Government tried hard to register this place into Unesco heritage, but have they ever told what was the real story behind this island? This island is a shameful footage of their war that forced sacrifices from Koreans with no human rights. There is so much of untold history that others don't know but We (Koreans) should know. This island shouldn't represent Japan's glorious era but rather their violent face in the past.
The people used to live there are "forced labor" miner. Many of them died there. These buildings should be preserved as part of history and miserable human story.
Many Koreans were forced to do hard labor in that island without their agreements during the WW2. Moreover, many of Koreans were killed and injured by Japnese and during the labor. However, even though that island was designated as UNESCO World heritage site, Japanese government is still denying their human right against fault, Therefore, most of Japanese citizens even don't know any about immortal things happened in that island.
I visited Gunkanjima last year and it was so interesting. We couldnt go inside the buildings tho because they were too fragile and they would fall down. When we went back to the boat we circled around the island one last time and it actually looked like a battleship.(im half japanese)
