North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ordered his army to upgrade its artillery as he posed with sniper rifles and tested a truck designed to carry a new multiple launch rocket system. According to experts, such a visit by the dictator to ammunition factories may be associated with efforts to develop new shells to supply “the Russian military machine against Ukraine,” writes The Telegraph .
According to North Korea's Central News Agency, Kim called for expanding "scientific and technological capabilities to enhance the artillery power" of the country's troops while inspecting production lines at major defense industrial complexes.
The North Korean leader was also photographed taking aim with a sniper rifle at a training ground while generals applauded him in the background.
In addition, he was spotted driving a military vehicle that was transporting a 240-mm multiple launch rocket system, namely a “technically updated version” that had previously carried out test launches of shells.
“In order to mass produce multiple launch rocket systems of our type with high efficiency and reliability, it is important to constantly improve the level of modernization of production processes,” the South Korean Yonhap news agency quoted Kim as saying.
In turn, military analyst at the Asan Institute for Political Studies Yan Uk noted that the publicity of such a visit could be aimed at attracting foreign buyers from countries such as Russia, Iran or Syria. He also added that Moscow may be interested in 240 mm missiles due to their compatibility with existing weapons.
The South Korean Defense Ministry believes that Pyongyang has sent approximately 6,700 containers of weapons to Russia since the leaders of the two countries promised to improve ties during a summit in September 2023. The department added that this number of containers is enough to store about 3 million artillery shells of 152 mm caliber or 500 thousand artillery shells of 122 mm caliber.
At the same time, the National Intelligence Service of South Korea reported that it was investigating information that North Korean 122-mm artillery shells, which were manufactured in the 1970s, were supplied to the Russian Federation for the war in Ukraine.
