PSYCHOLOGICAL DISMEMBERMENT: When connection shatters

  • Images of physical dismemberment are often used in fairy tales, dreams, and art to depict psychological fragmentation, numbing, and other forms of disconnection. Such cut-offs, dissociations, and splits may be related to earlier relational trauma and constitute defenses against experiences perceived as too overwhelming for consciousness to absorb or even acknowledge. Experience can be dissociated or dismembered, behaviorally, emotionally, bodily, and by denying memory or knowledge of events. The Inner World of Trauma by Donald Kalsched (cited below) posits an inner dynamic that is both protective and persecutory. Such understandings can point the way to a healing process of re-membering those parts that have been cut off, thereby giving disowned feelings and experiences a fully felt place in consciousness.
    HERE'S THE DREAM WE ANALYZE:
"In this dream, I remember being in a building that reminded me of a hospital or perhaps an asylum. It was very clinical looking (i.e., lots of steel and glass, white and silver walls/trim, people in smocks or scrubs). I was walking up a small stairway and looked through a doorway to see blood and body parts on the ground in front of me. Somehow, I know that it was two separate bodies, but I do not know who they belonged to. When I saw the body parts, I was anxious and had to stop myself from passing-out in the dream because I had a feeling that whoever did that to the bodies could be nearby. As I gathered myself, I began to walk away from the bodies very calmly to avoid drawing attention to myself. As I walked away, I saw a man, probably in his fifties or sixties, also a stranger, carrying a silver platter with more body parts. As I passed him, he said hello and smiled as if nothing were out of the ordinary. I then ran out of the building and vaguely remember running through a maze that had been set up on a basketball court until I was outside the building in a small grass field. The building was made of brick and seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. It had that look that many academic buildings have on college campuses."

I’ve been a massage therapist for twenty years and I can’t tell you how many people I’ve worked on who are dismembered from their body, their psyche, and their heart. They live and operate only from their heads. So they are constantly thinking, constantly comparing themselves, and constantly analyzing everything according to their social status. I feel so sad to see such suffering. Thank you three for giving us such clear and elegant language to these ideas and concepts. Happy Holidays!

    Love this one!
This is just like the “Heart-Wall.”
Which is made of a collection of trapped emotions which are wrapped, layer-by-layer, around the heart.

Not everyone who holds themselves out as a "Jungian analyst" has the skill, training, experience, maturity, and integrity as you guys! Thirty-five years ago I experienced a psychological dismemberment while engaged professionally with someone who didn't handle my transference skillfully. Most unpleasant. My main take-away: needing to take more responsibility for my own psycho-spiritual growth!

    I love this!
I’ve done over 3 dozen Aya ceremonies and so many other plant and plant-adjacent entheogens, and you really get it, in my opinion, I feel very validated just listening to you discuss someone else’s peri-Aya dream. How exciting.
Psychic dismemberment, with very vital, real, 3D figures in one’s inner experience, particularly during Aya, all so true. I’ve assisted at ceremony, so been privy to others in the midst and after their ceremonies several times, and the way you reference Aya really resonates to my experiences with a few handfuls of other participants. Love it! And your dream interpretation, as preparing the dream ego for the ceremony, boy does that resonate for me, and elucidates my experiences too!!!
    THANK.YOU.SO.MUCH!!!

I think I was/am dismembered. I have been trying to get myself back to some level of functioning so i won't end up homeless or dead. I feel a normal counselor won't get deep enough. I have been doing all this healing in my own but i need help. I need help from someone that can see beyond like you guys. Where might i find that at a VERY low cost? I just want to live a life that isnt painful and so i can stop this from getting passed along to my kids. I chose to have them live w their Dad because i knew whatever i am is not good for them.. . At the same time i know they need me and feel pain without me in their everyday lives.
Im so ashamed and i cant seem to just pull my bootstraps up. I need to live and have a place to live and eat but im also so lost and more that i don't know how to manage.

I'm thrilled you all made the connection between dreams & entheogens. Holotropic Breathwork experiences also pair nicely with depth psychology for continuous individuation.
Keep up the great work! :)

The disconnect is real, but i want to come back to reality. How to find the symbol to heal...
I have looked at my soul self and willingly want to understand and find peace.

When I read the topic the first thing about dismemberment I thought of was the OceanGate sub called the Titan. That might actually be a discussion for TJL because the psychology of the players is as important as the exploration and engineering with comparisons which could be made between Stockton Rush and Captain Ahab, both possessed by a passion or archetype with fatal results and the Pequod and the Titan which, along with the crew is destroyed as a result.

So you talking about diassociation. Living unconsciously. Reality testing -reduced and judgment impaired but living in fantasy for prolonged periods without the ability to get back to secondary process. Your just about talking of psychosis. The magician is used. The younger the age of the trauma the more primitive the defenses used. Langs would have a field day w this unconscious communnication.
Am i even in the room sounds like f60.1 ; the narcissistic transference. Hypochondriacal aspects which aren't understood by the client. When the denial is so pervasive that the client tells the analyst their interpretation is wrong. Projective identification via behavior and emotions denial projection. Lack of ego integration. Kernberg would have a lot to say about this splitting based defensive structure or probably either psychotic or borderline personality organization.
