Well, you have had this up for 5 years...and I am so glad you still have it here! I did this on my Spy Hunter that was having some very glitchy graphics for the cars moving, but not the landscape. I could not for the life of me figure this out, and I thought I was going to have to give in to the complete board rebuilds. I didn't use the ruler trick, and instead just pulled the boards apart and pressed all of the IC's and cleaned the connectors on the edges. It WORKED! Thank you again!!!
I actually made this for a man we shipped a Spy Hunter to...so he can see how to fix it!! Ad of course, putting it here also allows others to learn as well!!
TNT Amusements Inc think specifically need more Soldering tips :P although mom used to work for Collins RADIO back in the day so all she said was one makes the tip hot then you apply the solder probably talking about 50 yrs ago :P
I see you have the mcr power adapter and switch power supply. I have new ribbon cables, switching ps and adapter coming for my dumpster tron. I noticed you removed the filter board and most all components on the bottom. Does the Adapter eliminate the filter board and most of the other power boards? Leaving the 3 board stack and daughter board on the right?
Nice tip on taking the boards apart. When I take things apart, not only do I mark them but I take pictures with my I-phone. Sometimes you get distracted and boy do those pictures come in handy. Plus side is you can save those pictures and use them later.
Im not sure if you still follow these, but i had a question. I have a tapper game where the graphics just stopped working completely about 2 months ago. Could this fix potentially fix that as well, or would a complete lack of graphics be something more serious? the game had been very minorly glitchy for a many years before this occurred. Any feedback or advice would be great. For reference, the game works, when you turn it on you can "play" it, just the graphics dont work so you cant truly play it, if that makes sense.
Todd, I was wondering what method do you use for reflowing the solder on boards? Do you hand solder or use an oven or do you have a solder flow table? Thanks for the videos.
Great video! I was wondering if you could help me. I am working on a MCR SSIO and the D12 chip has been damaged. It's in a socket and something has fallen on the chip and has broken 4 of the legs off flush with the chip. The chip has a Midway 1981 stamp on it. Not all of the wording is readable but the first line says "23NAK83" and the middle line says "0 07AXN-A" with some of the num/letters possibly missing before and after the characters on both lines. Would you know where I could find one of these? Thank you for your help!
TNT Amusements Inc I know! Just the other day I tried calling the number on my Stargate manual to talk to Mr. Jarvis in Chicago, and it was some sort of financial firm. I don't think that they will stand behind their products. I fully expect a 35-year warranty, and there are 3 years left.
Rob McRaf Seriously, seriously.... like reallly serious this time... how many of the Bally MCR systems do you get in where there is a ground strap to attach to the pcb, even if it isn't connected?
Is it true that the battery/batteries need to be removed to keep them from leaking? If so, what is the best way to get those off? I understand they are on the power supply.
yes...its a rechargeable battery that eventually will leak...we sell a replacement lithium battery board that has the blocking diode...so no more recharging...or leakage...and battery lasts 5 years...its $13.99 plus $3 first class...order on our website.
TNT Amusements Inc I know I was being sarcastic although collect-ability on LD's will outlast DVDs and VHS yuck tapes. Mostly because of the HUGE covers. Like Vinyl :)
TNT Amusements Inc I used to work at an IBM assembly plant and all circuit boards were washed after they came off the assembly line, depending on the type of solder used, they went through a distilled water or chemical, and it was like a conveyor belt under see through system, like a car wash :)
Waiting for shower of sparks ,, and ensuing bad language after he drops the edge of metal board cage onto the power headers in the bottom of the cab , good suggestion but don't try this if there a pcb instead of a metal plate directly above the board with the socketed rom chips the downward pressure on the ruler will usuly instead push soldered ic pins up on the board directly above creating broken connections and damaging the solder side component pads as well mashing chip pins on the board above. the MCR 3 board set is also known for bad ribbon cable connections between the boards in the set ..

Nice, you should share more of these "Todd's Tips". Common problem fixes and etc.
I actually made this for a man we shipped a Spy Hunter to...so he can see how to fix it!! Ad of course, putting it here also allows others to learn as well!!

I have a Tron and Tapper on location, thank for this tip so I can resolve any future issues that arise. I'm sure learning a lot here!!
Great! Making a voltage adjustment video for thissystem later this week...watch for it as it also may help you!

Yes it does....but you have to keep the transformer for the monitor intact
@@tntamusements OUTSTANDING!
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions over the years.

Yes, thats true...but writing it on the metal trays is a good idea...as it can help down the road too if no camera available!

Thanks im going to try it on my tron. I have a few graphics issues.
Hopefully it will fix them!
What does MCR stand for? Multi Channel ???

We use a soldering station that keeps the iron at a steady temperature. We do have a soldering pot, but its only used to remove larger chips.

Could you be specific on the model number of the SSIO? There are a couple different versions.
I have 16 sets of Spy Hunter boards and only 1 of them had signs of ever having a ground strap directly to the PCB's
Rob McRaf I am writing a letter to Bally NOW! Those CREEPS!!

I really never paid any attention to that...I couldn;t even speculate on the amount.

Great video. Are those boards dishwasher safe?? I'm only kidding!!!! :)
Actually, we frequently use soap and water to clean filthy boards....as long as you bry them out thoroughly, there are no issues!
