    I like your hydroponic set up, I do lettuce as well on my porch with kratky method the flouresent is ok but tends to make
    them tall and thin. The best way for light is a LED light bars setup with a combo of several red and a few blue, this makes the plants fuller and much better growth. I would suppliment what you do with the led light just search utube for lettuce led grow lights. Japan has a giant indoor hydro grower for lettuce that uses these lights and grows thousands of plants.
    Hope this helps

    First of all I would like to say thank you as my comment you did a really really great job and it was wonderful to watch it all unfold. But mostly when I want to tell you was even though you had to end the video earlier than you expected to it's still accomplished the same goal I believe because I could tell which plant grew the fastest and the most productive and it looks like that Bok choy was the clear winner but it was wonderful to see the rest growing really nicely as well, so thank you very much I really appreciated all your work and time.

    Khang, I am trying to grow at least the starter hydroponic in soda pop can. My wife actually came up with the idea. She used a simple can opener on the can and a two inch net cup fits just perfectly. This method should help keep algae from growing on the rock wool. Plants can be reset into bigger containers as the roots grow bigger. It keeps the starter plants in a nice compact area to conserve the grow lights output. I would love to see some experiments from you to confirm any results I might find. I really love your videos and I have learned a great deal from you. My toe is in the water and I am eager to learn more.

      @@annaleedaughterofyhwh7767 Just buy a swimming pool noodle from walmart for a dollar and cut it into 1 inch rings. Cut a small pie shaped piece out of the ring and stuff it into the center to help hold the plant. You just gotta squeeze it together into the net cup. Just make sure to cut a big enough piece to fill in the hole in the noodle.

  • @guyandoren

    How did you arrive at your formula? you are using a concentration of 2.4 grams per gallon of MB and Mg, and 1.2 of Ca. I have seen other sources elsewhere use weaker formulations (ranging from 1.6 to 2.0) for lettuce. Yours is quite strong. Also, most sources suggest that you do not mix all 3 of these together at the same time because of precipitation of insoluble salts (mainly calcium sulfate). Best to add each ingredient seperately and stir in.

    Hi, I'm one of your subscribers. First time I tried lettuce (inspired by your video), kratky (window sill) also still young looks like at 8:57, it is growing big but seems very soft and droopy and bright yellow/green. I've always planted siberian kale and it always looked crispy, green, and strong. I was thinking it's to much sun so I transferred it to morning sun only but it only rise up towards night time but still soft by touch. The roots are white and not rotting. I also tried to lower the nutrients a bit because maybe it is drowning--I'll give it a few days. Any suggestions? thanks.

    I always enjoy your videos and I am setting up my first hydroponic Kratky system today. I have a large tub which will have romaine lettuce growing and a 6" net pot bucket lid for a hydroponic tomato plant.
    I'm confused by all the different fertilizers out there and I have a small bag of Maxigro 10-5-14. Will this be okay to use for lettuce and tomatoes?
    Thanks much for making this video too. :)

    • @KhangStarr
      @KhangStarr  6 лет назад +2

      Yes, that will work just fine. You may want to add MaxiBloom to your list since you're growing fruiting plants like tomatoes. Just switch when the plants begin to bloom. The most important thing is to pH correctly, and never over use your nutrients. It's better to stay under.

    How do you keep the water from going stagnant without an air stone? I thought water and oxygenation was important.

    • @musashinagatsubo9574
      @musashinagatsubo9574 5 лет назад +1

      The simple answer here is to not "drown' the entire net pot (and the plant itself). The nutrient solution comes NO HIGHER than the bottom of the net pot. The plant will send out "air roots" from the sides of the net pot which will acquire the needed oxygen. For more info, search on the Kratky method.

    • @KhangStarr
      @KhangStarr  8 лет назад +4

      +Nicky Yes, the container and lights link are under the description. You can definitely expand this. If you start the seeds 2 weeks apart, and use multiple containers, you can harvest lettuce all season long. You don't have to harvest the entire lettuce each time. You can just cut a few leaves to use, and let them continue to grow. This simple harvest method will allow you to get lettuce everyday for a very long time.

    thanks for sharing! you are awesome. you make me want to want to try this at my home!
    i have some questions before i start my own project, i hope you can help on my questions:
    1. Do you change your water and your hydroponic nutrients regularly? if yes, how often?
    2. Some people are using water pump and stone inside the water, is it necessary?
    3. Do you know how to make home made tent of indoor hydroponics?

    • @KhangStarr
      @KhangStarr  8 лет назад +1

      +Hery Tjia Thanks! Below are my answers.
      1. That depends on how large your container is and how many plants. The size in the video is 2.5 gallon and I did not change the nutrients. It has enough for the plants to grow fully. It's suggested that you change your nutrients out every 2-3 weeks, but I have left it longer.
      2. It's not necessary if you're using this same method. You cannot refill the water to passing the original level. The gap between the netcup and nutrients serve as oxygen for your plants. If you choose to refill, make sure to leave a nice gap.
      3. You can build a tent using pvc but tents are now very cheap you can buy online. Here are pictures of my setup. plus.google.com/118382364204627409312/posts/5Cr9CWGsoDG

    When you start growing the seeds in the rockwool, how often do you have to feed them with the water ? or just keep them moist at all time ?
    Also when you start growing the lettuce in the bucket and the water level is lower then it should be, we only add clear water inside or do we have to add more nutrients as well ?
    Many thanks

    • @KhangStarr
      @KhangStarr  8 лет назад

      +kuo chien Huang Yes, you'll need to keep them moist. You can feed them half strength nutrients after they sprout and is a week old. When you grow them in a bucket, if you need to refill, always leave a gap of 1-2 inches for air. You will need to refill with nutrients and not clear water.

    • @KCHuang02
      @KCHuang02 8 лет назад

      Thank you so much for your help. I am planning to open a organic veg shop in Thailand and right now i am trying to grow it myself and see how things work out. Many Thanks.
      Whats the difference between using pump and not using pump ?

    • @KhangStarr
      @KhangStarr  8 лет назад

      kuo chien Huang The main difference is electricity cost =). Realistically, with an air pump, you can grow plants and vegetables that will thrive longer. With constant air to the roots, you can grow fruiting plants like tomatoes and peppers all season long.
      The method without aeration is best for leafy greens that don't live long. Basically, you fill the container, put in the plants. As they grow, they drink water lowering the level creating an air gap for them to breath. Once they drink everything up, they're ready for harvesting.

    • @KhangStarr
      @KhangStarr  8 лет назад

      No, you cannot grow plants this method without nutrients. The airpumps method is called "DWC, Deep water culture". This method is called "non-circulating hydroponic, aka Kratky Hydroponic".

    • @thesunbeamin4304
      @thesunbeamin4304 8 лет назад

      Ok so if you do not have nutrients you need a pump and if you have a pump you dont need nutrients. Because I saw a video where he didnt have nutients and it worked good.

    • @debbiethomas2622
      @debbiethomas2622 7 лет назад

      Isaiah Rice you need nutrients either was as the plants need to get food some how. I'm the soil, they get it from the soil. growing hydroponicly, you are artificially supplying those nutrients (food).

      for Kratky method, you typically put the plant into a container large enough to grow them fully without refilling. If you must refill, check where the current level is and refill no more than 2 inches above that.

    HOW LONG DO YOU LEAVE LIGHT'S ON?

    • @jonathanlarocque7397
      @jonathanlarocque7397 5 лет назад

      m-crew crew for lettuce ideally over 14 hours of artificial light. The more light per day the faster the growth so a 24 hour lighting scheme is very doable but draws more utility costs. Also raise the light up if it is 24 hour exposure to prevent leaf burn. This wont work in the winter at a window sill without supplemental lighting as without it your plants will only recieve like 500 or less lumens in like 4 hours of the day.

    You put your new seeds under your light. Other growers say to put the seeds in a dark place while they germinate. I guess light isn’t important????

    • @KhangStarr
      @KhangStarr  14 дней назад

      The problem I see with seeds in the dark is if they sprouted, and you forget, they will be super leggy, so I don't recommend that.

    STOP WASTING SEEDS!
    Never can understand why people plant multiple seeds per Rockwool: Just use a few extra Rockwool to compensate for the germination rate and put one seed in all. That way if you want 5 plants, and seed 7 Rockwool, you'll likely get 5-7 plants and you won't waste 5-7 seeds or more on seedlings you'll cull, you also won't have to disturb the root structure of any plant nor waste the time thinning them out. Remember: if a seed doesn't grow in one of the Rockwool, just squeeze out all the water you can, set it in the sun, and re-use it next time!
    I feel like this is an old wives tale taught to growers by SEED SELLERS to sell more seeds!
    Stop wasting TIME and SEEDS for NO REASON!
