  • The gray wolf was once one of the most widespread mammals on this planet but today it's range has been reduced by a third. Human wildlife conflict is one of the main reasons behind their decline as people often retaliate when wolves attack livestock. As wolves can still be found in so many places around the world, there are quite a few distinct grey wolf populations. There are around 38 gray wolf subspecies alive today and i will be going through some of the most unique subspecies as i will be going through 3 of the most unique subspecies of wold that do things a little differently.

Here in a forested area of the Piedmont Region, wolf packs became a dangerous presence again, with neighbours of ours losing cats, dogs, chickens, alpacas and sheep. Friends found gutted roe deer in the driveways, or body parts of pets... When a mother with cub was seen studying our movements from a hundred yards away, we wouldn't let our grandchildren out to play in the fields anymore. Forestieri estimated 10-20 packs in our province, but I think that number dropped drastically in the past 5 years. My impression is that even though they're protected by law, people did not want them.

Live near their habitat means a person sometimes will lose his /her family livestock and pets, or even its own life. But if the community decided to slaughter large number of the predators another more serious problems will appear. And it occurs everywhere in the world like Indonesia with Sumatran tiger or saltwater croc, USA with coyote, bear, and panther problem, India with leopard and so on

There's is an increasing population of wolves in Greece, actually the largest density of the species is found at the national forest of mt. Parnetha, merely 20klms from the center of Athens.
Of course this fact caused an equally increasing concern about the fate of livestock, but so far, the solution we found for this was the reintroduction of the Greek shepherd dog in the equation. This is a huge ancient breed of dog, capable of fighting off bears and wolves alike. I have recently watched a video in RUclips where a sheep herd owner said that due to the guarding of his dogs he lost only one sheep in 10 years, and there were 2 more wounded that managed to recover the wolf attack. There are a lot of good shepherd dog breeds all around the world that can protect the herd from the wolves , but also protect the wolves fron angry shepherds with rifles.

Here in Australia my brother who lived in Alice Springs for a long time has a dog that is a dingo and red cattle dog mix. She is very dignified, if that can be imagined, with a very soft coat and never barks. They are dingo traits. Another trait is that she will sometimes scratch at tree bark for insects. That is not cattle dog behaviour but comes from the dingo part of her background.

Which is tragic on all sides, anyone who’s empathetic can’t even imagine the pain of that tragedy & then to not only not be believed but be considered a murderer. It insane how some of us humans believe that since we’re humans we’re not on the menu but it isn’t their fault either.

I go to sushi places and though my least favorite is salmon sashimi, I wonder if the sea wolf preference for fish brains isn’t due to human fishing where the head is usually discarded. Wolves then finding the heads get used to them as a food source. They are a rich source of nutrition. Although parasites and bacteria occur in salmon I can’t see this as the cause for the wolves’ preference. I could be wrong but it would be interesting to learn the mechanism for this behavior.

As a hunter myself, we need to manage our predator populations so that they don't run out of prey. I've seen in my area with coywolves where they ate all the rabbits, squirrels, fawns and turkeys and were resorting to picking off pet dogs and cats. We as humans messed up our ecosystems so badly that if we don't intervene in a regulated and scientifically based manner than we can help keep the balance. That's why there are strict quotas for predators, so that we can ensure the population stays healthy and there is enough prey to go around between all the predator species

@@Kev4Kev In fact, their graceful anatomy resembles African jackals, and in coloration they resemble the other canids you mention. But its gracile anatomy also resembles the wolves I mentioned, if you take the time to look you may notice similarities.

A healthy population of large predators can be managed. Bears, puma, sharks ect. Owners will protect their dogs as an investment, even if it means shooting wolves. Wolves can be tangled in fences. States that ban humans from taking wolves see greater prey/predator population swings. Fawns/ rabbits/rodents have high population and predators the next. Followed by starving to death and the cycle repeats..

I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where we have an abundance of wolves. We have a lot less deer, especially mature bucks. I definitely see a lot less small game and game birds. The wold needs to be de-listed from the Endangered Species Act, just as the bald eagle has. The wolf is not managed by the state much less the federal government here in Michigan as well as Wisconsin and Minnesota.

    • @stoda01
      @stoda01 2 месяца назад

According to recent data there are approximately 630 wolves in Michigan. In state so large that is nothing. You actually run the risk of inbreeding and poor genetic diversity with numbers so low. Also I believe one year they did open up wolf hunting in Wisconsin and it was a straight up massacre. They killed much more than the tag limit. It wasn't sporting at all. Just vicious killing. Wolves are unfairly vilified. Also there are deer everywhere in Michigan. Wolves actually help keep deer population healthy because they go after sick, old, injured and young. They are generally not targeting mature bucks if there are easier food sources.

You made one major mistake when you were talking about non.Lethal methods And I'm really sorry to say this. Because I love wolves as well, but it's been proven that. Once a Wolf kills a cow. They don't like anything else cause. I know that everything else is harder to kill. So anything else killing cattle or sheep or anything else like that? It's been proven that that's all they will target. So what you're doing is telling people that no, you don't have to kill wolves, but then you're gonna put the problem on somebody else and they will kill the wolves. I'm sorry but you just can't control the hatred by being nice to it

Dumb people. If ranchers or livestock owners are SOO concerned about their assets, or animals, I should say, then they wouldn’t let them roam all over the freaking place!! Invest in some better perimeter fencing, maybe! Why do livestock have the right to just graze all over the place, but then people wonder why some get killed? If you look at the majority of ranches or countryside fields and pastors defensiveness, minimal at best. Barbed-wire fencing isn’t so useful-it might keep large cattle or horses contained, but smaller animals, including both herbivores and carnivores, can easily wriggle underneath the lower sections of fencing-such as sheep, goats, pigs, wolves, coyotes, etc.. Seems like everyone wants to cut corners to save costs. Well, maybe you’re in the wrong industry.

Wolves get tangled in fences too. Guard dogs are not a viable answer. They can spread rabies. Dogs will still kill rodents/rabbits/fawn and other small animals for sport that a wolf would eat. Owners will protect their dogs as an investment, even if it means shooting wolves.

I spent 5 hours in 2 meetings today about wolves on the west coast of the United States. Wolves do not belong in a modern lower 48 states. Guard dogs and fencing are not viable solutions to protecting all forms of livestock.

A healthy population of any large predator can be managed. States that ban humans from removing them from the landscape see the predator/prey swing. High rabbit/fawn numbers one year and predators the next. With predators striving the next year to repeat the cycle.

@wyattgardner3552 yeah that's what they want you to think. But wolves move into areas where their aren't much in the way of prey now they're killing cows and dogs out of peoples yards in eastern Oregon. You can't find a buck to shoot in Northern California between the lions and the wolves the deer have been annihilated hunting hasn't had anything to do with that. Predators and cars have.
