Jesus Christ, i was searching for this song at least 10 years of my life, i recorded it on k7 tape from a radio station show in Brazil. I heard the guy saying "the mockingbirds" or something like this. Today i found it searching for "the monkey birds + come around" LOL
I use this song in Advanced ESL classes - a very clever use of different English idioms and expressions (High horse, come around to my way of thinking, etc etc). It always makes me homesick, though. Italy is a loooooong way from home. Love the Muttonbirds. Always have. Always will.
Played this to my girlfriend the other day in the car and she said, "what a lovely song". So I told her about how I used to watch this video (I think on VH-1) and it always makes me smile.
When this song came out I was in the middle of an infatuation with someone who was unobtainable but who would indeed visit occasionally. So when i heard this song it knocked me for a six. Lol. So pleased to hear it again, and revisit those bitter sweet feelings. Isn't life grand :)
God, I love this song, and love this band. When I am really homesick for NZ, this is all I want to listen to. THeir lyrics are always so clever, and add the rythm, and you have pure joy. They were great in concert, too. Saw them live in Christchurch, 1995ish....
I have been looking for this video for years. I remember hearing this song when it first came out and went and bought the single. Top tune from a top band.
Its sad the beauty in music today doesn't exist like it does in this song. This band truly had GOD given talent. This is a great band. This is a unbelievably well written song. The singer sing from the heart. Something highly lacking in music today.
An Australian I can name brilliant young Kiwis nailing it. Tiny Ruins, Marlon Williams, Nadia Ried, Aldous Harding, The Eastern, Teeth and Tounge....and that's just the Kiwis!
Lol, similar to others here, knew the song couldn't for the life of me remember who, ….something birds.... mocking.. no...… trawled through a lot of other 'come around(s)' then I saw it!! Yay. I have it on cassette (how mad is that, I put it on a cassette off a CD) in my car but no track listing, very sloppy. LOVE THIS TUNE
@Jokiwi Hello there. New ESL teacher in USA here. I was thinking about using Mutton Birds' Come Around for my ESL class, and so I went to the video on you tube, and saw your comment. Wondering if there's anything special you do to intro/prep the class for the song, and also how it is received by your students. Btw, visited NZ in 2002, fell in love with the Mutton Birds music. Cheers, Bob, from Virigina, USA
Don McGlashan was playing French Horn and Percussion in the Auckland Symphonia at the time when REM formed (in 1981). The Mutton Birds weren't even a twinkle in his eye, yet ... they started in 1991, by which time I think REM had about 7 albums under their collective belt. But I think you're correct in saying they're NZ's answer to REM. I remember seeing a Mutton Birds advertisement in the UK music press in the mid '90s where there was quote saying they were a cross between Crowded House and REM ... I was in! Went to see them live for the first of many times very soon afterwards. They're still comfortably in my personal top 10 bands of all time.
It cost something like $250,000 to make this video. Shows it's better to have an idea for a video and a tiny budget rather than a big budget and no ideas.
Still one of the best love songs ever… Pity they didn’t come back - still waiting.

ha! That's quite clever. Hope you're home again now.
Anybody listening still???
Yep!

definitely. I discovered them in 2003 or maybe early 2004 and they have been one of my favourite bands ever since.

Yes, this song stirs bittersweet feelings for me too. Also grateful to be at home right now listening to great music; life is indeed grand!
Love that little special sound, after DM sings “smile”
Utterly brilliant song.
Love the off beat guitar picking in the background , Great song, should have been a world wide hit.

Disagree mate. You need to look harder!!

This is my favourite from Envy of Angels. Great tune with fantastic lyrics. Muttonbirds are a great great band and NZ should be proud of them.
My favourite New Zealand band met drummer at bayleys beach one Sunday back in 2000 top bloke.

New Zealands answer to REM but were formed well before maybe Rem copied the Mutton Birds
kerry la 3 seriously?
A great band, however Rem formed in 1981

This song was written by the bass player!
I know. It feels like he should smil at the girl and mention it!
Keeley Hawes circa Wives and Daughters.

Back in time this was a low budget, today you can make it for 250 dollars... but we don't have bands with that vibe anymore :/
Voiii liab!!!
DI Denton
voi liab!!!!!
Awesome... anyone want to say the same about a young Adolf hittler.... don't even mention the hair on his lip
