    Gotta love the V22. Hope to see the UK purchase a few.

    • @piers389
      @piers389 2 года назад +1

      The UK has two, with one in use by different special forces. There are no plans to purchase any more. Additionally, a replacement is needed in the near-future as they are getting old, expensive to maintain, and still cost (2021 prices) over $95m when incl. the required support package. The cost of flying is just over (2020 oil prices) $10,000 per hour, whereas a Chinook or similar costs about a third of that.

    • @ThatCarGuy
      @ThatCarGuy 2 года назад +5

      @@piers389 The Uk does not fly the V22, they train on US V22's but have none in their inventory. Only the US and Japan do.
      The V22 top speed is almost double that of the Chinook while carrying slightly less of a payload. Both have their pros and cons.

    • @piers389

      @@ThatCarGuy The UK unofficially has two - they are leased and only used by two of the four special forces groups for 'unconventional' assignments. That doesn't change the fact the V22 is over 40 years old in terms of design, and incredibly expensive to buy and run. The AW609 shows promise, so long as it's bought 'bare' and customised as a military version is complicated given Bell's involvement.

      @@piers389 You're unofficial source can't be used since it also denies itself.
      "It is not clear at this time how many Ospreys have been 'acquired' (if any have been at all ). Neither is it clear if they have been bought or merely leased from the Americans."
      "That doesn't change the fact the V22 is over 40 years old"
      The V22 is not over 40 years old... It's not even 40, its a little over 30. The F22 is also getting older, is it bad since it's expensive and it too is almost 30? Heck going by that logic the Ch47 is terrible. Age means little. The V22 has a better top speed, better range, and carries a similar payload Better costs more though. The Ch47 is cheaper and has a slightly higher payload. Both have their pros and cons as stated and are better for different scenarios.
      I dont study civilian aviation so I can't speak on the AW609.

    v22 would solve alot of the carrier issue fixed wing aew and aerial refueling issue uk carrier seems to lack plus the v22 will be able to increase its logistical resupply chain options for its carrier and longer range the v22 can carry the f35 engine in its cargo bay the v22 could do what the c2 greyhound and e2 hawkeye do for us carrier forces in a stoval capacity and withe v22 vas fuel kit the v22 can also double as a tanker this single platform plus upgraded type 45 and brand new type 26 escort would make uk carrier forces as formidable practicaly speaking as a us carrier strike group.

    Boris needs to save his pocket money, we need some V-22's for air-to air refuelling of our F-35bBs.

    • @1chish
      @1chish 2 года назад +2

      Never worth the money the V-22s cost I'm afraid. $110 Mn per aircraft back in 2012.
      Better idea would be to convert the 3 F-35s we have in California to Buddy Up Tankers as they are first build, have had a hard life and are well out of software sync and will likely never see combat. Cheaper than V-22s and cheaper by far than upgrading them to Block IV (@ £22 Mn per airframe even for later airframes).
      Indeed not all our first 48 will be upgraded to Block IV apparently. Well one certainly won't after it went for a swim!

    • @henryvagincourt4502
      @henryvagincourt4502 2 года назад +2

      @@1chish + Interesting idea, re the F-35's, but I think the cost would be huge given the three aircraft involved, we are short of fighters as it is. I understand USMC Osprey's can now be configured as tankers, so that will bring the cost down and have support available, and of course V-22's have multiple other uses.

    • @1chish
      @1chish 2 года назад

      @@henryvagincourt4502 Its a sad fact fact we are short of fighters but the 3 at Edwardes are very basic early build aircraft, orange wired and are used to integrate weapons. They have had a very hard life in terms of sorties and air hours. To rebuild them for combat would be a major exercise and that is before we add Block IV to them. I just think its better to accept we have managed without them since 2014, that they are oddballs and we can only put them to limited use.
      The other negative to buying V-22s is you add in a whole new world of logistics, training, maintenance and stores costs for what 2 or 3 aircraft and just to buy 3 would cost $240 Mn ....

    • @henryvagincourt4502
      @henryvagincourt4502 2 года назад

      @@1chish + Its a fair point, and maybe a stop gap, we really do need some sort of air-air capability to extend range given the short legs of the F-35B. You will get no argument from me if they go for a bolt on kit. What's your thoughts on the Tempest program?

    • @1chish
      @1chish 2 года назад

      @@henryvagincourt4502 If Tempest comes good (as I am sure it will given the solid backing) it will be a game changer for UK aerospace. We have the right partners in Leonardo, MBDA, RR and BAE and now SAAB. No one else in Europe has any 5th gen design, manufacture and operating experience other than Leonardo in Italy and BAE / RR in the UK. Leonardo have been good partners at Westland and other projects. MBDA are the best at weapons and integration and SAAB can bring some badly needed cost control and design work as well as opening up some markets (if we choose to export). BAE and SAAB already partner in the Griffon which is an excellent low cost fighter system.
      I think the idea of graduating upgraded Typhoon engines and systems onto Tempest will get us to a prototype stage quicker than we have seen before (this is where SAAB are excellent). We already proved the concept when we integrated upgraded Tornado systems on to Typhoon. MBDA and Leonardo again. Once the airframe is proven its all about building in the advanced sensor suites. Software will not be the problem it has been on F-35 as it will be all under one roof.
      Call me an optimist but I just think we never lost the ability to do great things we just had the lack of confidence from Governments who destroyed so much before. This looks different.
