  • 1991 was an unforgettable year. One inconspicuous night in September, MTV aired a music video called "Smells Like Teen Spirit" that would change the music scene forever. Now with an exciting counterculture movement on the rise, Nirvana already knew that the 'sheep' would get in line as they prepared themselves for a tragic demise in only a few short years. But wow, what a landmark moment Nevermind was for all of us during this time.

I remember jamming out to this for the first time one day on Mtv when I got home from school. Definitely a cool memory, our house was undergoing a few building project’s so I was in our old garage area where we had a couch and tv. This and Incesticide are my favorite Nirvana releases, didn’t really get into them until around 96 though.

As a high school teacher, students pass me in the hallway, and if they’re wearing a band shirt, I ask them to name a song from that artist.
9/10 think Nirvana is just a brand name.

Thats one thing i loved but it shocked me. I heard Kurts voice in so many songs like SLTS, Lithium, Breed, etc, then i heard MTV Unplugged Nirvana, and it was insane to me. I love MTV Unplugged album

"Yeah, maybe you all are just seeing Green now... But I was listening/watching Jacob Givens since waaaay back bro"
As for how Grohl got to Nirvana, I remember listening to The Edge 102.1 FM (A Toronto, Ontario based radio station) back in the late 90's/early 2000's I think, which I think is where Alan Cross started his "Ongoing History of New Music" shows/series (I think it's since been put on podcasts or been serialised or something... and if you haven't checked it out or heard of Alan Cross, please do so immediately, I think you will LOOOOVE him/his shows, he has SO much knowledge and is SO keen about the history of modern music!!)... where was I... anyway, it was on one of his shows he was following Grohl's musical journey I believe, and the band before Nirvana wouldn't really let him sing (I mean, a drummer who sings? Come on, be real, sit in the back and shut up man) but they let him sing on this one track that Alan played on the radio and it's stuck with me for decades: "and the gods looked down in anger, on this poor child..." so please check that out for your enjoyment as well!!
Headed to Wiki to try to find it. Here's his pre-Nirvana history: "At 17, Grohl joined the punk rock band Scream after the departure of their drummer Kent Stax. He became the drummer for Nirvana after Scream broke up in 1990. Nirvana's second album, Nevermind (1991), was the first to feature Grohl on drums and became a worldwide success." ... and from there it was easy to find it: ruclips.net/video/6Sj2m9ag-mY/видео.html (Scream - Gods Look Down).

According to Eddie Trunk, when Nevermind came out, ALL 80’s rock/metal was basically extinct. Radio stations shifted, MTV shifted. Those 80’s bands went from headlining stadiums to playing clubs/theatres
