"This song is a sad song if you listen the lyrics but that's not how you feel while you're listening" is like the thesis statement of twenty one pilots lol. Every song is either a mellow banger or happy sounding, but they're almost all about struggle and strife
Don't feel bad about pausing, the reactors who just watch a whole video silently and go "Ah yeah that was cool" and then end are practically stealing content from the original posters of the video. I really enjoy when someone reacts to twenty one pilots for the first time. They are a duo: Tyler (vocals, songwriter, bass, keys/synth, ukulele, guitar, creative content) and Josh (drums and trumpet). They still live in Columbus OH where they were born and raised. The video was filmed with their actual families in their childhood homes. Tyler shared a room with his brother, which is why he was in the bedroom scene with them. A lot of their music deals with struggles with depression, anxiety, and insecurities. The character of Blurryface (the name of this album) is a personification of Tyler’s insecurities and the black paint represents the almost suffocating like control Blurryface has over what he creates (throat: voice and hands: what he writes and performs). The pitched down vocal and red are Blurryface. But even though many of the lyrics tackle serious topics and issues, they have a way of making the music very uplifting. And their live shows take it to the next level! I hope you continue the TØP journey! I would recommend these next: - Car Radio - Migraine (some serious bars!) - Lane Boy - Fairly Local - Holding Onto You (Live From Fox Theater) - Heavydirtysoul (this song is the bridge between the Blurryface album and the Trench Era, which is amazing but you will appreciate it more once you have explored their older music. Nearly everything is interconnected.) The other thing you will discover is they don’t really have a genre. Their sound is very eclectic. It’s a fun journey!
I had a horrific childhood. It would be a nightmare to go back to that time; but I understand this song. I survived my childhood because of my brother (that candle bar cuts deep). Adult problens put distance between us later on but as children? We'd go to war for eachother. We took beatings for eachother. We went hungry for eachother. I'd give almost anything to turn back time to those days. Tragically, he was murdered a couple months after his 30th birthday and sometimes a certain smell brings him back to me. RIP Capt. "The song is a sad song, but that's not how yoy feel when you're listening to it. " - Is basically what twenty one pilots is about. They sing a lot about mental health and how it affects them, especially Tyler (the singer, writer, composer, mixer, multi instrumentalist and genious) who's been dealing with a lot of depression and anxiety and thoughts about suicide. And they have helped A LOT of people struggle through mental illness. I think that is one of the main reasons why their fanbase is so loyal. Also because of how true Tyler and Josh (the amasing drummer and a very big part of twenty one pilots) are to themselves, by not being corrupted by the indutries, but instead going they own way! --> "Lane boy" is all about that! One of all great songs by them! The black print on his neck and hands represent his insecurities (along with blurryface, which is a red thread throug their music), in his creativity and voice. "ODE TO SLEEP", "LANE BOY", has explanation of who the are. TOP has no genre, they can't even categories themselves. Black paint is for Tyler's insecurities, so we can see them too. Drummer Josh, talented, but very shy, also has his demons, l8ke most of us. THANK YOU FOR REACTING TO TOP!!!
Paint on Tyler's hands and neck is a representation of Blurryface - this album is Blurryface and its a concept album where Tyler is constantly battling Blurryface which is the personification of all his insecurities, bad thoughts, etc - the black on his hands and neck is him trying to cover up insecurities in his music (vocals and writing)
I'm 60, and my son is 20. I found 21P through him - it's his favorite group. I am fascinated with the depth of their lyrics, and in particular the concept of Blurryface - the personification of his insecurities, which he treats as a person and interacts with directly. That's profound.
They are one of those bands that transcend music because their music is everywhere. In movies on the radio. A few years ago you couldn't go anywhere without hearing them.
I've found that Twenty One Pilots kind of defies genre. He raps, he sings, but the music is so many different styles. I've heard hip hop beats, reggae, ska, electronic, industrial and typical rock and pop through their catalogue. They're like a chameleon - they change to suit whatever mood/atmosphere/lyric that they wish. That's paint on his hands/neck and represents his 'alter-ego' Blurryface. I love to hear you open up about your anxiety, I feel you! Trust me, Twenty One Pilots will help you. It’s beautiful art. That’s just the best way I can say it. Dive in, you won’t regret it.
Hello friend, 48 year old male here. Welcome to the twenty one pilots fan club(clique) because I promise you will enjoy these guys. All I can say is read the comments, listen to the people, sit back and enjoy the journey. Lead singer Tyler writes about his own insecurities all the time. The whole album Vessel is about that, internal demons, depression, anxiety etc. including one he wrote when he found out about fans contemplating suicide(powerful). Anyway his “bars” are amazing, he writes every song. The beats are amazing, production is amazing. The whole band is amazing. And their live shows, and the best I’ve ever seen.. seen them 5 times in concert. New subscriber here and hiunwill have many other newbies going down the TØP rabbit hole.
To Howard and Scarlet, I am fifty years old and this is the first band I've ever been a true •fanatic• of. And I don't have a kid to blame it on. I have been to see them live three times now, and will hopefully be seeing them again in the future. I have always loved excellent music, I was raised on Van Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Nina Simone, Phoebe Snow, Pink Floyd, so many others. But this band, and their obvious purpose, which is, I think, to help teenagers survive adolescence and all of it's crippling derangements, are so unquestionably •good• to me, that no other band can compare. They are becoming masters at their craft, but also, they genuinely feel, I think, that they have been appointed a job from their God, to save these children's lives. And I think that is the most worthwhile thing I've heard about in maybe ever.
I’d Put It Alongside Hey Ya And Pumped Up Kicked As One Of Those Happy Songs With Sad Lyrics. Outkast Did It First Ironically On Purpose. “You Don’t Hear Me, You Just Wanna Dance”
I cry every time I hear this song. I didn't have the love and security these boys seem to have had, but I can still relate to wanting to return to a simpler time, before responsibility. I had to grow up too fast, but I enjoyed every moment of freedom I could.
Your reaction made my heart warm..this song was played for me by my son and we now share and love their music..I love when other people realize how powerful lyrics can be and how they mean so much in so many different ways to all of us❤️
Very good point about people not necessarily having had a good childhood. This song, to me, describes the plight of a generation of young people who had to grow up too fast in order to survive in the Dog-eat dog economy.
I live with crippling anxiety. I get it. I relate to the song so much. I love your reactions. It surprised me when you said you had anxiety as well. You seem so confident and chill. Then again on the outside, so do I. 🥺
I've heard people say this song isn't supposed to be taken literally. The black on Tyler's neck and face represent his insecurities so it's like the negative part of his life is saying he wishes to go back to the "good old days" but in reality he's happier where he is.
Fresh strawberries. In the grocery store. Takes me back to picking them by the bushel as a child, then getting homemade strawberry preserves to spread on biscuits with butter for Sunday breakfast. And homemade strawberry shortcake, made by my mom. Understand, my mom didn't do a weak, paltry-ass, poor excuse for a shortcake in our house. Dinner plate. All shortcake. Bucket of strawberry sauce in the middle of the table with a big-ass soup ladle to top it with, Fresh can of spray whipped cream, Kool-Whip, or vanilla ice cream to throw on top. Mom went beast mode on some fresh-picked strawberries! :D
Very similar memory. Fresh raspberries at the grocery store. Memories of picking raspberries in Grandad's garden, during summer vacation in Montana and Grandad making delicious freezer jam. Stacks of bread on the table and jam every meal.
Super cool band. AMAZING deep lyrics. I love Tylers pen game... RESPECT. Tyler writes the lyrics and sings and plays piano, keyboards, bass, and Mandolin. DO NOT PISS THE TWENTY ONE PILOTS FANS OFF. I say that cause I care about ya POLO. So happy you dig this band. They have a lot to dig into.
If you like music that sounds happy but has sad lyrics, you are in the right place with TOP! For more along those lines I recommend Guns for Hands, Migraine, Ode to Sleep, and Ride (in any order). The band is just Tyler and Josh; the third guy in this video is Tyler's brother. The dark markings on Tyler's hands and neck represent his insecurities around his voice and writing ability. If you get invested please consider doing the Trench Trilogy, which actually includes a 4th song off the prior album: - Heavydirtysoul - Jumpsuit - Nico and the Niners - Levitate There's a whole story with lots of symbolism in that series of music videos, so they should be watched in order for the full effect. As you already noted, they really defy classification into one music genre, but they are immensely talented and have lyrics with real depth.
Lol gotta admit, that comment about the ink on his neck and hands threw me. I blinked and thought "Pardon?" I always suspected it was via a permanent marker or something but had no idea why. I assumed it was an avant-garde fashion choice. But a quick google search of the musician explaining it in his own words validated your comment while remaining just as mystifying. But right on. It's still an unusual coping technique, but whatever helps externalize one's insecurities and allow them to regain some measure of control.
@@bradleymay5350 The lyrics to Jumpsuit hit different knowing that. In the video Blurryface/Nico applies the black to Tyler's neck when he captures him, and afterwards Tyler sings "I'll be right there... but you'll have to grab my throat and lift me in the air. ... I'll stop my plans. But you'll have to tie me down and then break both my hands." In their recent concerts during Message Man he brought out what I'm guessing was a bowl of warm wax and dipped his hands in to coat them in black. 🤯
It's vindication, the uplifting nature comes not only from the music but also from understanding a feeling and being happy that someone else knows it too. And knowing millions and perhaps billions of other people are sharing these emotions with each other. Sadness isn't so sad when we're able to share that feeling together, songs like this allows for that.
Very excited u did TOP! They don’t have a bad song! I’m gonna recommend RIDE, LANE BOY, CAR RADIO, Heavy Dirty Soul, Jumpsuit, The Outside, Guns for hands, Message Man..those are great to give u a taste BUT there is LORE and we will help you understand as you watch them. It’s so deep, colors represent stuff just so much but it’s super cool! LETS GO MAN!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤
Bro, you had it at the beginning when you asked "what are they, 5?" Yes. That's what the whole video is, it's what they were doing as kids. He'd go to his buddy's house and hang with him and his older brother listen to music, then him and his buddy would go back to his place and hang out with his brother listening to music....
I’m 53 years old and I love this song! It just makes you remember being a kid and how great it was and wish you hadn’t wanted to grow up so fast. Yes smells are a definite trigger for me to bring back memories! ❤️
As someone who had a rough childhood (abusive step-dad) this song makes me cry but moreso because I remember all the friends I had. Living with my sister. When my mom was alive. How when I compare the one stress of hiding from dad growing up to the mountain I carry today I'd go back to getting my knocked around by my Dad any day. Cause now I'm mostly alone, have all the normal adult stuff and am very aware of how precious life is and feel it slowly drain from me every day. The grind is real, Man and I wish I could turn back time too.
The next Twenty One Pilots song you react to I recommend is.. Trees - Live at the fox theater. Watch to the extreme very Ed. It's a long video but well worth it. Other songs I've heard are My Blood, Heathens, Ride, Chlorine and several others I can think of at the moment but have on my playlist. Voiceplay and Geoff Castellucci have new videos out as well for Halloween. Voiceplay... Hide and Seek (Ding Dong). Geoff... Ghost Riders In The Sky.
I was brought back to my childhood the other day.... I had done some washing and included some old Table cloths from the time of my Grandma'... and the next couple of days, all my clothes smelled of Grandma's house.
Hi, new here! I have a habit of searching for twenty one pilots reactions daily. Glad you checked it out, nice reaction, looking forward to more! Subscribed for more
Twenty One Pilots are their own genre, you literally cannot place them in just one XD It is 2 guys Tyler Joseph the singer, and Josh Dunn the drummer. Tyler wears black on his hands and neck to represent his insecurities. Also Blurryface is the physical embodiment of insecurities to clear that up for you. They sing about a lot of different personal and mental health topics. Even if this song doesn't resinate with those, who haven't had the best childhoods growing up. I can guarantee you that they have plenty of songs for those people as well. I would absolutely love to see you react to Car Radio, Migraine, or Guns for Hands
I watched the other video with my daughter and I told her I bet you would react to 21 pilots by tomorrow 😂 I’m not as knowledgeable as other people who I’m sure will fill you in. As a newer fan I love these guys. Very different and they don’t have a genre
Going back to being young though...a chance to change how your life went though. I loved my childhood. There was trauma. Lots of it. But I had enough of a good foundation, that I was always able to find my balance. I would have been myself and screw the consequences. I was raised to restraint of myself. To care more about my older siblings and their feelings,my parents, then what I really wanted to do. I should've never locked myself in.
I had a lot of preconceived ideas about this band since they had a few overplayed radio songs back in the day, but I took my daughter to a show and quickly changed my tune. They are extremely talented and their live shows are unbelievable!! Tyler writes all their lyrics himself and they play multiple instruments. He does a lot of their production. They like to control everything they do. I was reading in Rolling Stones that there were like only 22 or 23 number 1 songs written by a sole writer in the 2010s….and 3 of those songs were by Tyler Joseph. The guy is creative and commands a crowd like nobody’s business. Very genuine and good to their fans.
I love that you pause the video and react! I loved your reaction to this video. It is one of my favorites by TOP. “Chlorine” is my absolute favorite though.
Twenty One pilots genre is a self-titled genre called schizophrenic pop which basically means their majority pop that's what they tend to sit around however their music tends to not fully fit into pop giving it kind of its own category as it bounces around with all sorts of different inspiration. Unlike a lot of musicians Tyler doesn't set out to make a genre of music he sets out to make music itself he makes art because it helps him deal with anxieties or there are things he wants to get out or there are things he wants to say to tell his fans to tell the people the world certain views that he has or the way he's feeling about certain things and sometimes a specific genre doesn't quite fit for something. You're always going to fall short if you build yourself boundaries before you start creating art
The concept of the video is dreaming about childhood. The scene where they are in beds and their families are around them screaming, "wake up you need to make money," is reality and everything else in the video, them in their hometown, hanging out in each other's houses, drinking caprisun's and riding big wheels, is their dreams about their childhood, when they had zero responsibilities, that they wish they could go back.
100%, im 35 and this is the best my life has ever been. going back to my childhood would be horror. I was abused severely by my dad, made fun of for having a neurological disorder...Id do anything to not go back haha
The fact that you couldn't place the genre (I dont know if i spelled that correctly) is exactly what 21 Pilots wants. They are all and none at the same time.
They go back to their childhood in this music video. To parents, to siblings, to the rooms where they lived together with their brothers. To the best moments in life.
Well, you've discovered the Harry Mack rabbit hole...and the Aurora rabbit hole...now you have the TOP rabbit hole to explore. These guys are straight FIRE in every way. Edited to add: TOP is their own genre. It's kind of impossible to categorize them any other way. Also edited to add: I had a shitty childhood myself, but this song makes me nostalgic for something I never really had, if that makes sense. Also edited to add: my brother-in-law used to play shows with TOP before they were nationally known (he was in a different band but they played concerts together).
Yeah, sometimes nostalgia can be even more powerful thinking back on a childhood that you wish you had 😕 That’s cool about your brother-in-law! I’ve heard they’ve always been pretty down to earth. Their live shows are so good.
@@GarnetJ For sure. TOP is from Columbus Ohio (where Ohio State University is and has a thriving music scene) and my BIL lived in Cincinnati which is around two hours away. Some promoter put these summer concert series together with TOP and my BIL's band. It was a sort of pop-punk early 2000's band and they were pretty popular in Cincinnati at the time. Nobody knew that TOP was going to make it that big. They were just two guys making music and trying to break out of the Columbus scene. Pretty crazy stuff.
There's a human who listens to Rap/Hip Hop/Music who hasn't heard of Twenty One Pilots? Hot dang.. what rock you been under friend? :) |-\ [EDIT] - Dam man, you got this in one. He starts without Rhyming saying he wants to be himself, but falls back into rhyme because that's what's expected. He's a prisoner. Poor Clancy.
My son sent me this song.. we played it at his funeral.. along with a lot of other songs he shared with me.... I love this song. It's one of my weirdo favs!

Love the reaction. Next Car Radio, Lane Boy and Ode to Sleep for introduction :)
To Howard and Scarlet,
I am fifty years old and this is the first band I've ever been a true •fanatic• of.
First time seeing you react , good video love 21 pilots have alot of good music
The entire Blurryface album is a masterpiece.
But blurry face is the one he's not
no
I cry every time I hear this song. I didn't have the love and security these boys seem to have had, but I can still relate to wanting to return to a simpler time, before responsibility. I had to grow up too fast, but I enjoyed every moment of freedom I could.
My favorite they sing is Heathens. Reminds me of my step son. You should listen to it
Another favorite of mine that they do.
I just recently used a soap from Bath and Body Works that reminded me of my aunt's bathroom growing up. I had a lot of good memories there.
Welcome to the World of Twenty One Pilots 🌼
You bring the joy back, the way you discover, man. Your discovery is our rediscovery. Privileged, thanks.
Definitely check out their song "car radio "
Yessss welcome the world of TOP, I saw them in concert last month amazing I didn't realize that they could get better in my eye but wow 😲 what a show.
I don’t why I love the fact that you don’t know what black out tattoos are, but there’s something wholesome about that.
Love, love this song! Glad you appreciated hearing it. I am a senior from Toronto! 🇨🇦
I’ll play this with them on 7/19/23 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin! Wrote it with them!
I appreciate your review and honest take on this!
It's a sad song but it feels like relief cuz it's so relatable
I've heard people say this song isn't supposed to be taken literally. The black on Tyler's neck and face represent his insecurities so it's like the negative part of his life is saying he wishes to go back to the "good old days" but in reality he's happier where he is.
Their song “Ride” is also really meaningful and has a good sound.
Lol! But RUclips clikkies are sweet!
If you get invested please consider doing the Trench Trilogy, which actually includes a 4th song off the prior album:
- Heavydirtysoul
- Jumpsuit
- Nico and the Niners
- Levitate
There's a whole story with lots of symbolism in that series of music videos, so they should be watched in order for the full effect.
But you'll have to tie me down and then break both my hands."
In their recent concerts during Message Man he brought out what I'm guessing was a bowl of warm wax and dipped his hands in to coat them in black. 🤯
Guns for Hands is rarely mentioned but one of my faves!
Ok I ve just watched 1.55 minute of your video and I'm listening what you are saying and I predict: YOU RE GONNA LOVE THEM!!👽💀❤🔥😆
It's vindication, the uplifting nature comes not only from the music but also from understanding a feeling and being happy that someone else knows it too. And knowing millions and perhaps billions of other people are sharing these emotions with each other. Sadness isn't so sad when we're able to share that feeling together, songs like this allows for that.
Like, TOP knows this nostalgia is a common feeling for all of us, and he makes a song talking about heavy stuff while celebrating his similar we are
Twenty One Pilots is their own genre Lol, they go everywhere
Very excited u did TOP! They don’t have a bad song! I’m gonna recommend RIDE, LANE BOY, CAR RADIO, Heavy Dirty Soul, Jumpsuit, The Outside, Guns for hands, Message Man..those are great to give u a taste BUT there is LORE and we will help you understand as you watch them. It’s so deep, colors represent stuff just so much but it’s super cool! LETS GO MAN!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤
I'm here for this journey...
Ode To Sleep and HeavyDirtySoul are MUSTS, Polo!!!! Can't wait!!
Also, Lane Boy!!!😊
Glad you found TOP! Best band ever. Period!!!💜💜
I’m 53 years old and I love this song! It just makes you remember being a kid and how great it was and wish you hadn’t wanted to grow up so fast. Yes smells are a definite trigger for me to bring back memories! ❤️
I am 58 years old and I love this song .... I just love T.O.P....I only discovered the band a few years ago and they have so many great songs.
Next one by them HAS to be Car Radio!!
UNBELIEVABLE JEFF!!
I Never Realize The “We All Would Take The Latter” Line Is A Double Entendre🤯 I Only Just Know Realized It Can Also Be The Treehouse Ladder🔥🔥
Incredible reaction!
The thing that stresses you out is probably what you're good at.
Can't go wrong with any of their music. Great reaction 👍
Hi, new here! I have a habit of searching for twenty one pilots reactions daily. Glad you checked it out, nice reaction, looking forward to more! Subscribed for more
I wouldn't say it's a sad song, but I would say that it has a melancholic feel, with a comedic twist to it.
I’m like Tony Stark from Iron Man and I can’t take my eyes of the moving thingy in the background.
"It's a sad song but you dont feel that when listening to it" Yeah welcome to Twenty One Pilots, Evidential existentiality on a good beat
Wonderful reaction, hugs from Sweden
One more thing, you will find that often in twenty one pilots songs, the music is upbeat and the lyrics are deep
Keep doing what you’re doing. Love your style & energy.
I love this song. A lot of thinking in the 90s.
Smell is THE strongest sense related to memory.
Yeah, sometimes nostalgia can be even more powerful thinking back on a childhood that you wish you had 😕
That’s cool about your brother-in-law!
|-\
[EDIT] - Dam man, you got this in one.
Loved your reaction ❤
