Terrific book. I just finished it a week or so ago.
To think Fred Harvey could have built all that at the time is astounding. A most remarkable story.
To my surprise, Freddy Harvey married a Betty Drage. That is my family name too. Very sad what happened to them.
It is hard for modern people today to understand how important the railroads were to the towns and their growth and success.
For 60 years Fred Harvey was part of that American growth. And for an Englishman, as American as apple pie.
Thank you for bringing a forgotten part of American history to life.

Women today would not last 5 minutes in those 19th Century uniforms! But it would be nice to see some in one! ;)

Calling indigenous peoples and their lifestyles “exotic” is abundantly ignorant. As someone who is from Northern New Mexico, this whole video is upsetting. Obviously Mr.Harvey never had traditional New Mexican food.

Im sorry to remind you that this was a time where racism was a common place. Where companies that hosted high class people (aka wealthy white people) would have never been employed at all. It is history. And while it isn’t right the fact that he was doing it in that time at all shows that progress could have been made a lot sooner.
