  • Johannes Thingnes Boe defended the BMW IBU World Cup title he had taken 12 months ago. But it was only at the final range of the season that his victory was decided. A long season of battles between him and the French team is worth rewatching, even though it ended with the farewell of Martin Fourcade to biathlon.

A great way to finish Martin, in the yellow, winning. I thought it was the perfect end, because everyone was the winner in a way, Boe taking the overall, Fourcade taking the final win in the maillot jaune. I loved the look Boe gave the targets on the final shooting, after he shot five in the last shoot, too, it was a great moment, the two great champions giving us the best battle ever.

    A great and particular season

Good season and a fitting end to it as well, although I would have preferred Johannes on the podium in Fourcade's last race. Next season will likely be a procession with 1) Johannes not skipping 2 world cup venues and 2) no consistent challengers to Johannes (or at least no one as consistent as Fourcade).

He might just beat the wins record for a single season again.

@@jeanmicheldu13george29 Why are you so sure that only they and not Johannes can become better? They are both practically the same age as Johannes, QFM is actually older. We all know Johannes was not at his best after his parental leave, and yet he was still the dominant athlete of the season. Next year, if(when) he gets a season with no major disturbances, there is any reason to think that he will also step up his level to what we saw in 2018/19.

@@Umb2132 I never said Johannes won't become better, and I have no doubt he'll win the cristal globe next season, but I think both QFM and Jacquelin will step up as a consistent challenger to Johannes

@@jeanmicheldu13george29 My point is merely a logical one, based on what we know from this and previous seasons. The point I am trying to illustrate is that it doesn't matter for the overall outcome if they step up and Johannes also steps up. And I think, that since Johannes was not at his best this season, the latter scenario is very likely to happen.
My reason for thinking that Johannes will dominate no matter the Frenchmen's improvements has to do with the difference between level and consistency. Right now Johannes is already consistent and his improvements will be in the general athletic level that he displays consistently.
If we take a look at QFM, he already has a very high level and he is 27 years old. Big improvements in his level is highly unlikely to come by now, but he can improve his consistency with which he displays this high level (which is still lower than the level Johannes can find next season).
In contrast, Jacquelin is different story, as he is currently at a lower level than QFM and also even less consistent. Jacquelin may be able to improve more than QFM. He will likely improve both his level and consistency, but he has to improve A LOT to reach the combinationi of level and consistency that the 2018/19 version of Johannes has. Not very likely.
So to conclude: 1) Johannes is likely to improve in level. 2) QFM is likely to improve in consistency. 3) Jacquelin, starting from a lower level and consistency than QFM, is likely to improve in consistency and level. RESULT: Johannes is still a step above.
