Such a great point about how solid wood guitars never really sound as good through a pickup. One of the reasons I love my Martin 000-X1. It plays great and sounds very similar to high end guitars when plugged in. It sounds really good unplugged as well!

  • @henryhunter5026
    @henryhunter5026 4 года назад +2

Very interesting video featuring a pretty unique guitar. I’m sure that eventually someone will come up with a guitar built using composite materials that is both economically viable and sounds great to those of us who’ve always played and listened to wooden instruments. Manufacturers are already making guitars with HPL bodies and non-wooden fingerboards and Ovation have long been making instruments with “ Lyrachord” backs and in some instances carbon fibre tops. There will be lots of problems to overcome including the attitude of us guitar players who are very suspicious of any deviation from traditional materials and construction methods. They days of plentiful cheap wood are long gone and the musical instrument makers will have to look for alternative materials.

I have an x20 emerald and wow what an awesome sounding and looking guitar. For carbon fiber it has good bass tone something carbon fiber struggled with for years. I live in NE part of country so stays stable from freezing cold weather to hot summers and everything in between. Yes they are expensive due to how it has to be built but you have a great sounding guitar that can withstand the elements and once you get action were you want you are good to go. No moving wood here. I didnt know what to think when i purchased it was a bit of gamble after watching lots of videos but i am glad I did. The guitar showed up with neck relief spot on and intonation near perfect. I had a luthier lower the saddle for a bit lower action but other than that good to go. This guitar is and was a great investment. If you are on the fence don't be you wont be disappointed. PS plugged in it sounds just as good as it does unplugged.

I've played a couple of carbon fibre guitars and have come to a similar conclusion to you, they all seemed to lack something. For players with fretting issues I have recommended Newtone Heritage strings, they are lower tension and balanced, I've fitted them for years and for younger players and older players with less finger strength they've been a real bonus, they sound fantastic too. I haven't fitted anything else to my Mcilroy AS25 since I bought it 12 years ago.

I missed the comment about a "different winter saddle" when this video first came out. But it's actually a good idea in some cases I would think. For example my Martin D10e (Sapele back and sides, sitka top) drops about a whole mm in Winter dispite being in its case all the time except for about an hour or two every other day when I play it. I've tried humidifiers in the case but they almost always seem to work well for a couple weeks then I'll open the case one day to find signs of minor over humidification at which point I panic take off the strong tension and let it sit out for a few hours while sweating I'm done with humidifiers. I'm in Texas so weather can shift dramatically and humidity along with it within very short periods of time. So I think I'm just going to make another taller saddle for winters and in the meantime be vigilant about checking the guitar for to much drying. So I'll only be humidifying when the guitar needs it rather than everytime my hydrometer drops below about 30%. I figure you can do more damage with excess humidity in a shorter amount of time than you can with too little humidity. Wait....didnt Ted have a video about just that?

    Expensive? Yep.
    Worth it? Yep.
My only issue (on the X30) is if I get lazy on A I tend to mute the high E. I measured this vs my S6+CW and the distance in on the high E is further vs the X30. I dunno, maybe I'll make a new nut with the high E in a bit more.

You need a little class in carbon fiber. first of all when filing it you don’t have to worry ,you can take it down without any issues. but if you wanna make sure that you’re getting the right height you go to your local hardware store get a laser level, and that will tell you how close you can get that perfect and how much to remove from your bridge using a feeler gauge when the light touches the top of the metal on the gauge you know what and where you are just a suggestion personally because the carbon fiber resonates longer the volume seems to be higher in most that I’ve played but there is a technique under the top of the guitar where are you going small patches of wood veneer on the underside and you can adjust that town level it’s a hit and miss game but I have a rain song that you can play along side The Martin and you cannot tell the difference in a blindfold test when recorded and check with very sensitive equipment they’re identical big plus to carbon fiber is that they do not expand and contract like wood so they are great for outside players these are just thoughts I’ve had to share with you on these instruments.

Regarding 64th of an inch; the thing that people who didn’t grow up using an imperial unit ruler is that it’s very easy to visualize fractional divisions of an inch. What’s half of 3/8s? 3/16s. Half of that is 3/32... half of that is 3/64s. And the metric people want to convert inches and get .7mm? Lol
I use both imperial and metric for different things. But metric tends to be too fine, or too coarse. It’s easier for me to see a 25.5”’ scale... not 647.7 mm. There’s that .7mm coming up again. Lol

You never disappoint. When you say you haven't heard a carbon fiber guitar that sounds as good as the better wood guitars, it seems possible that we need more time to learn how to use this material properly. Wood, as wonderful as it is, doesn't seem ideal for some applications, and I wonder if the complexities of guitar building might be an example. Thanks for your reliably intelligent videos.

I remember a friend asking for this in the 70s, with the same response. The other issue is - without buzzing when? When I'm strumming, when I'm fingerpicking, when it's dry (as you say). The same reason why most (oldschool) machinists will say "tenths" or "tens" and mean .0001" not .1"
    Also: Your playing is excellent!

late to the party here, enjoyed your video a lot. I just bought one of these and really like it, do you think it is a good idea to have it set up ? and also which gauge strings would you recommend ?

It almost has nylon classical kind of sound quality. Interesting. Almost half way between that and steel string

Can you please do a video about in the absence of a tuner, what is the best way to tune a guitar to itself. Cheers.

This is a really interesting looking guitar, and it’s cool to see a guitar from my home country. Although, the County is pronounced “dunny-gawl” Lol

Haha - Ted said it like it was a province of Mars or Jupiter. Still I do like his ongoing 'solder/sodder' riff. I've got an Emerald, and bought it direct from Emerald. It's a fantastic guitar. They don't sell to shops. If I lived in Ireland I'd be down their factory like a shot to hear some in life. Cheaper than a D28!

Interesting guitar and looks good, but I'm not crazy about the sound. Doesn't seem to have much character. Just checked out a demo of a Rainsong acoustic and I thought that sounded a lot nicer. BUT here's the confession, you can write me and my opinion off because ... I'm the only person in the world who just loves the sound of Ovation guitars. There, I said it.

I have long been a fan of Modulus Graphite bass guitars. I currently have a 1992 quantum 6 with a non truss rod neck. This was my primary gigging bass for several years of heavy gigging. It is impervious to climate, and changing string gauge made no difference, it always played perfectly. It does have a distinct treble characteristic that I happen enjoy in a bass. Geoff Gould was associated with prominent players like Phil Lesh and Bob Weir while developing the instrument necks. I believe the technology was adapted from aerospace usage.

Agreed. The Modulus necks are great.
