A Tribute to one of the best players in the NBA - John Stockton. I recorded the live broadcast here in Salt Lake of John's retirement. I put together this tribute for John.
John Stockton is the perfect example for all professional athletes. He did his job, fought hard and never gave up. John wasn't always the best or the biggest, but he had more heart and desire than anyone. He never complained or argued about money with the team. He understood that he was the lucky one to get to play basketball for a living. Most other athletes these days only want more money and are pissed if they don't get it.
I was at the retirement ceremony in the Delta Center with my best friend Matt. I remember it like it was yesterday. After all seats filled...they turned off the lights and Hot Rod called out, "Now for the last time ever, point guard out of Gonzaga, #12 John Stockkkkkkkkkkkkton. And then everybody stood up....and they played "Simply the best." I cried like a sissy, but never turned to look at Matt, neither did he. About 4 hours later he asked me if I cried....I said yeah....he's all, "Me too!"
I am from Mexico and I certainly know he is the best point guard of all times... and my favorite player. No one like him... no one... all time assist leader!!! all time steal leader!!! NO ONE LIKE HIM
John Stockton always left it out on the floor and always played with heart and desire. We forget how good some players were when you haven't seen them play for awhile. He was the best at that time and so was Karl malone
John Stockton was the definition of what Point Gaurd was supposed to be. He was the all-time assists leader, all time steals leader, and a very underrated shooter. Its too bad he never won a championship, he just happened to play in the era where Jordan got all the calls from the refs.
stockton was one of the best outlet passers ever. he could make a wheelbarrow look like a five-time all-star. he'd find a way. he would just angle the ball so it goes of one of the edges or handles. wheelbarrow - 18 points stockton - 15 points, 14 assists, 3 steals, 4 rebounds
THIS IS JOHN STOCKTON. HE WORE OLDSCHOOL SHORTS UNTILL HIS LAST GAME AND THE GREATEST BASKETBALL PLAYER OF ALL TIME JOHN HERSEY'S FAVORITE PLAYER. LOVE YOU DUDES FOREVER.
I couldn't have said it better. Great man on and off the court , a true role model. Loved watching him play and pray that he will get in the HOF on first ballot, too bad he will go in with Jordan, cause Jordan will get all the glory
Noone can ever live up to Stockton, not Magic, not CP3 (especially CP3), not anyone.Magic had less assists, steals, points, and John averaged less turnovers so dont even compare Stockton to anybody. Stockton was "simply the best."
Absolutely fenominal passer, and always put his team first. I hated the jazz, and it was so much because john stockton tore people apart with his ability to pass it to anyone at will, and have them score
Stockton was also one tough little S.O.B. He'd go down in the paint on a regular basis and set picks against power forwards and centers and get knocked around pretty good.
I saw an interview with Mark Eaton quite a few years ago, and the guy asked him if John could dunk. Mark said he'd seen him do it a few times but he had to get up "quite a head of steam first". If anyone doesn't get that, it means had to get a good running start to do it. John Stockton is 6'1", he just looked small next to the towering 6'11" Karl Malone and the 7'4" Mark Eaton.

Isiah was an impact point guard. He could take over the game through scoring, defense or passing. Very similar to how Chris Paul plays right now. Stockton could not impact a game like that. Still one of the best PG ever.
@perfect1150 I agree with everything you said except, "John wasn't always the best or the biggest." Stockton is always the best! I can't see his record on assist and steal ever get surpassed. There are many good players. There are many great players still. There is Stockton, a category of its own.
SORRY MR. JOHN STOCKTON FOR FEELING JELOUSY WHEN YOU PASSED MAGIC JOHNSON IN TOTAL AND AVERAGE ASSISTS. I FELT BAD FOR MAGIC BUT I LEARNED TO UNDERSTAND YOU DESERVED THIS MORE BECAUSE MAGIC PLAYED WITH WAY BETTER PLAYERS THAN YOU DID. 1988 THE JAZZ HAD THEIR BEST TEAM EVER AND YOU SCHOOLED THE LAKERS AND WAS THE BEST PLAYER THAT SERIES. THE LAST TRUE POINT GUARD IS MR. JOHN STOCKTON. A HERO TO ME. I LOVE YOU MR. STOCKTON.
MY BROTHERS FAVORITE PLAYER. I LOVE YOU COQUI AND MR. JOHN STOCKTON LOVES YOU TOO. I HAVE AN URGE TO WATCH OLDSCHOOL BASKETBALL WITH YOU, CARLOS MORE, CAVERO, CHINO JUAN CARLOS VIVANCO, AWAPARA, CALUDIA BOERO, MR. COST CORDERO", THE GOAT" JOHN HERSEY, ARNALDO DE LA TORE, MARTIN AND SANTINO. IF WE DO. WE SHALL TRY NOT TO CRITISIZE MODERN BASKETBALL OF TODAY. LOVE YOU GUYS. JAVI.
stock lead the league in steals. he can score but he didn't have he always had someone who can do that. as a 6'1 point gaurd his percentage is over 51% throught his career
Taking on the Bulls was not enough, they should have won. Malone disappeared and the Bulls got nearly every call, even at the Delta center did the bulls get calls. The league wanted the Bulls to win those games.
my point is a dude that was 6'9 played a position that had an average of 6'2-6'3 height, and on top of that he had way more turnovers than stockton ever did.Plus he wasnt a great shooter or that much of a leader because lets face it those laker teams were led by kareem. And this isnt me downgrading magic or anything,he was a phenomenal player but no ever really gives stockton his credit when its due. When i comes to pure point guards ever he has to be either 1 or 2 behind pistol
@phillyphan801 Good story, dude. I would have cried too, I'm sure. This dude was an absolute warrior. But I'm pretty sure it woulda been stooooooooockton, not stockkkkkkkkkton lol
pimpmaster, please rise above saying players are better because they won rings, that has nothing to do with who is a better player or not. Utah choked because Malone allowed bums like Rodman, Brian Williams, and Grant outplay him whereas Stockton always played exellent against whoever he played. Rings mean nothing as far as skill is concerned. Heck, Chuck Nevitt has like 5 rings and he lived at the end of the bench...
I had a ton of respect for Stockton until recently...when he showed his true colors as a conspiracy theorist and writing a letter in support of a January 6th insurrectionist. Apparently Stockton should go back to school and get an education......doesn't take much to realize breaking into the Capitol is wrong....what a shame...
Stockton scored over 15,ooo points, so where does this "he can't score" come into play? Also, Stockton was a true point gaurd, he wasn't ashoot first pass second guy like you see now even with Isiah. Stockton was the best point gaurd ever, one on one or in team ball....Isiah was overrated.
Isiah better than Stockton? You must be a football or baseball, or hockey fan because you know nothing about basketball. 1st in steals, 1st in assists, over 15k points, untouchable!

3 words I miss hearing at a Jazz game:
"STOCKTON TO MALONE!!!!!"
That, ladies and gentlemen, is a phrase that means a lot to Jazz fans everywhere.
Song is totally appropriate.

Best point guard of all time no one did it better , him and Karl perfected the pick and roll brilliantly.
the best at making other teammates better. all-time leader in assist and steals.
What a legend!
The best of all time. No one compares at the PG position.

He's not a dirty player, he just know the rule to how to play the game. So, please respect!
people often forget about John Stockton, he was one of the best point guards to ever play the game
i just wish him and Malone could have gotten a ring
Noone can ever live up to Stockton, not Magic, not CP3 (especially CP3), not anyone.Magic had less assists, steals, points, and John averaged less turnovers so dont even compare Stockton to anybody. Stockton was "simply the best."
I miss my old Utah Jazz!!! Best days ever
Absolutely fenominal passer, and always put his team first. I hated the jazz, and it was so much because john stockton tore people apart with his ability to pass it to anyone at will, and have them score

One of the greatest of all time no doubt. Stockton a hero among peasants.
This man deserved more, the greatest point guard there ever was

@perfect1150 For the most part, you were right... except for saying "John wasn't always the best"
Taking on the Bulls was not enough, they should have won. Malone disappeared and the Bulls got nearly every call, even at the Delta center did the bulls get calls. The league wanted the Bulls to win those games.
hi, do u have a video of John Stockton when he annunces his retirement?
Nash is good but #12 Stockton is better.
Stockton is just awesome!!!
true-that was his actaul prime average too.
Malone was his rite hand!
CP3 is overrated. Even CP3 himself has said he could never live up to john stockton
No one will ever catch john
how abaout stockton becoming a coach
please magic was a small foward playing the point
Wut's funny is John Stockton was voted the most dirty player in the league by his peers 6 consecutive seasons. That's just funny to me
my point is a dude that was 6'9 played a position that had an average of 6'2-6'3 height, and on top of that he had way more turnovers than stockton ever did.Plus he wasnt a great shooter or that much of a leader because lets face it those laker teams were led by kareem.
But I'm pretty sure it woulda been stooooooooockton, not stockkkkkkkkkton lol
also stockton could score himself as well play diffense it leads the histroy in steal.
@imnotbad9
the ball hog got 6 rings though..
WAS SUPPOSE TO WIN BOTH TO BE HONEST
stock is a better passer than nash for sure but him and kidd are even
@perfect1150 Dont agree. He was the BEST.
4 dislikes? Its hunting time!!!
He was one of the best but also one of the dirtest player. He gets away with it because of his squeaky clean image.
CP3 will.
thats what louis did after revenge of the nerds??
What's the name of this song?
Marquino Fernandez The Best by Tina Turner
Steve Nash is pretty good hes way better than Jason Kidd I think, but compared to John Stockton you cant even compare
Easy question tina turner
Isiah shot the ball way more than Stockton. Really, there is no comparison. Stocktn owned Isiah as a point gaurd, ask Isiah!
reggie miller too
pimpmaster, please rise above saying players are better because they won rings, that has nothing to do with who is a better player or not. Rings mean nothing as far as skill is concerned. Heck, Chuck Nevitt has like 5 rings and he lived at the end of the bench...
Its only natural that JS is better than nash
12 comes first than 13 right?
I had a ton of respect for Stockton until recently...when he showed his true colors as a conspiracy theorist and writing a letter in support of a January 6th insurrectionist. 6 people are WNBA fans
Isiah better than Stockton? You must be a football or baseball, or hockey fan because you know nothing about basketball. 1st in steals, 1st in assists, over 15k points, untouchable!
didn't u mean underrated. la tenorio is better than stockton.lol
