he’d be a first ballot hofer if he had won super bowl 51. i wish the man had good defensive support like manning and brady but he still showed how great he was.
Kyle Shanahan played a large role as well. When you’re lead is 28-3 midway thru the third quarter, take the air out of the ball and pound it. Make the Pats D stop you. Chew up the clock.
@@commanderjoj6426 it is also on the falcons for not getting that true #1 edge guy. They had a good back end and linebacker core but you need that #1 edge to put a stamp on your defense
@@commanderjoj6426 Offense did its job by putting up 30+ points, we rarely hear how the defense collapsed in the second half since its easier to blame the bigger name with Kyle Shanahan
It's a mix for me. Some of it was the defenses he played with didn't do a good job holding the leads he gave them. But on the other hand, he didn't help himself with some the costly mistakes he made as well.
Yeah but the main thing was him having a pretty good overall team in his youth. Of course he had one of the best offenses in the history in football but a fluke Vic Beasley year is not good enough.
Fair point but how many of those mistakes were due to him having to force something bc the defense has given up touch downs on back to back drives and you don’t trust them to stop a nose bleed.
The script writers just hated the guy with two first names it’s just that simple 😂 (seriously though lifelong falcons fan, it was mostly the team not him)
He went to what was supposed to be a top 5 oline elite rb and top 10 defense and literally the whole team didn’t perform even him but they beat the chiefs
The O-line going to shit and the defense falling apart was not his fault. No one saw the colts imploding like that coming as on paper they where a QB away, instead the entire team shit the bed.
@@savrennorton6465colts haven’t had a top 10 oline since 2019. I’m a colts fan too, JT missed 6 games, was hurt for a lot of others, missing Leonard hurt the defense, but they were top 10-12 with 0 offense. Ryan’s arm was not lively, and it hurt to watch him
Interesting that the picks you showed from the Seahawks and 49ers games were both instances where the receivers fell down. Maybe not the best throws to make, but hard to pin it all on him when his receivers can't stay on their feet
I trace it back to going all-in for Julio Jones at the expense of their offensive line. Remember when Turner "hit the wall?" He was the same RB, but the Falcons weren't blocking it up any more. From a distance, it just seemed like they gave up too much for Julio.
A lot of people will view Matt Ryan as a choker, but he dragged some of the worst defenses I've ever seen to the playoffs. I really hope he does get into the Hall of Fame
As someone who is from Australia and has only followed the nfl for 3 years, ryan is my favourite player. Dude deserved better I also wish I could've seen his glory days
I like Matt Ryan for giving the Falcons quarterback stability, and I don't believe he's a choker, but he's not a Hall of famer like some make him out to be. His stats are good, but he was only a top 5 QB in the league like 3 times, he often takes unnecessary sacks at crucial times (like in Super Bowl 51), and he had some pretty good offensive weapons like Julio Jones and Michael Turner. He probably will get in the Hall of Fame because of how easy it is to get in nowadays, but imo, he's Hall of Very Good at best.
Ryan was a victim of having completely shit defenses behind him his whole career. There's a reason he earned the nickname Matty Ice. This dude was always bringing us back in the 4th quarter. Matt was a GREAT qb in Atlanta, minus the last season and a half where he was clearly declining, and his arm strength just was not what it used to be. Matt can't be blamed for his time in Indy either, as he was clearly a backup by then. He was just on a massive contract, so they were obligated to play him.
The defense had given up only 3 points through nearly 3 full quarters in that Super Bowl. They were probably gassed as hell at that point and all they needed to do was run the ball a kick a field goal.
Matt Ryan honestly deserved better. People forget Matt Ryan used to be able to lead 4th Quarter Comebacks (At this point, I believe he's ranked #4 all-time), even with a bad O-Line. When you think about it, a lot of the reasons why he has that rank is because Atlanta hasn't had a good defense in decades. Atlanta has had a history of getting bailed out by talent on Offense whether it be from Matt Ryan, Roddy White, Michael Jenkins, Michael Turner, Julio Jones, Tony Gonzalez, the list goes on. When you look at the Defense, Atlanta hasn't had a notable defense since the Grits Blitz era.
Truth is, Petrino did the Falcons and their fans a big favor by quitting and running off into the night. Petrino showed every indication of being a disaster of a head coach in Atlanta. Petrino had quickly lost the locker room and even before the start of the 2007 season the Falcons front office was realizing what a mistake they made in hiring him.
Matt reminds me of Dan the Man Marino he checked all the boxes made one superbowl lost it and more than likely like Dan Matt's last season was lack lustered it's a shame but it happens in the NFL he's a great QB Atlanta was fortunate to get Matt after the Mike Vick situation and how the outlook was bleak to get another franchise QB
What he did his first year in the league will probably go a bit underrated in the greater picture as rookie QB's are starting to have that unexpected demand on them to be playoff bound year 1. Reality was, that was very much not the expectation in Atlanta at the time. Moreover, Matt Ryan seems to have healed the wounds of that area post Vick era. For a franchise that has been historically unsuccessful at best, many of the best years came with him at QB. When I look at a player in my era at the position that played for a significant portion of time and was perhaps just as much responsible for success at times with lesser teams as he was a choke artist, my mind goes to (I feel) the very overrated Phillip Rivers for finding ways to throw a bad pick in a bad spot; Ironically a head to header in which Ryan does that was shown in this video. And I still feel that way. Which is an apt comparison, as both will be argued someday for the Hall of Fame and both will likely not get in for their worst moments. But in the long term discussion, Matt I feel is closer to a Dan Marino comparison, then a Tony Romo one in Rivers case. 51 will always be with Ryan, as will some of the teams that should've gone to the Bowl prior. But I'd blame that more in that specific case on questionable decision making on his staff. But there is no doubt in my mind that the Atlanta Falcons best era of consistency doesn't occur without Ryan suiting up for them. I think he's unlucky and that their teams failures ended up resulting in the team to win or participate in the SB. I don't blame him for Indianapolis either especially because I felt at the time he was starting to regress and Indianapolis was a team that had already peaked throughout the last few seasons. I think he went to that team at the wrong point in their timeline and wrong time in his career. At that position people think you can stave off regression with talent around you. You can play better certainly, but true decline cannot be obfuscated.
I know someone will say Brett Farve as well, for as many bonehead plays he made he made tremendously impossible plays and also went to 2 SBs with 1 victory in town built around football and is a HOF. But I think Rivers is a more apt comparison because these two will have to rest their case on success and failure in their respective careers. I don't think either will get in just to be clear, there's too many potential HOFs or current HOF's in the era they played at position to justify it in my mind. When you actually think hard on players who will or are in, he is the type of player we talk about 30 years as a NFL Films top 10 players of his era player, as a hall of "Very Good-er."
@@ajevans1422 Kelly, Ryan & Aaron Rodgers should _all_ be considered great QBs who were pretty much handicapped by inept coaches. Those Bills teams had *explosive* potential to blow out almost every game, but Marv Levy was stuck in the '70s with his mentality & would be down three scores in the 3rd quarter standing on the sidelines saying "you need to wear down the opposition by running the ball." Ryan had Shanahan who thinks football is like hockey & the players on the field can *only play* offense OR defense not both. He _still_ coaches like that. As for Rodgers... He has been _cursed_ by having been drafted by the Packers. From Day One they threw him _at_ Brett Favre & said "Go: Learn." Favre humiliated him often. Then when Rodgers _exceeded all_ the expectations the Packers *had* for him _AND_ won them a super-bowl, they simply continued to treat him like a Slow Child & unwanted step-child & never treated him with any respect. Mick McCarthy made it a point of pride to never allow Rodgers to even speak, & Matt Lafleur is continuing the same tradition. Remember what Rodgers' suggestion was regarding the problem of the rookie receivers in the preseason? @@choosecarefully408 And in Ryan's case, not just inept coaching, inept defenses. Atlanta hasn't had a good defense in decades. That's why you had Ryan in his prime constantly bailing them out with 4th Quarter comebacks.
@@RandomRon005 I hear that. This guy here www.youtube.com/@BarryOnHere/videos has done some incredible not merely stats-based but context-based videos trying to sum up careers like those of Ryan & determine if they're chokers, playoff chokers etc. He's made many excellent & entertaining videos. Just this week he revised his "top ten all-time QB" list & put Brady on top, Aaron Rodgers on it, but way down on it. He finally succumbed to what he himself has said was stupid, non-thinking reactions & done this. Brady has had many a 4th quarter comeback because he has *always played for teams with defense that* allowed him to play badly for three quarters. Brady has won games where he & his offense scored zero points! I realize that offensive tackles rarely win or lose games in _ANY_ quarter but you _still have to_ give better QBs the same context to measure them from before you can put Brady above them. He himself has made at least three videos about how Brady's teams always keep him in games & how he's benefited from multiple team stats that are outside of the QB's control. Whether or not it's *intentional* (but I have a feeling that it is) Brady slouches through the first three quarters of every game whereas everyone else _has to_ play all four quarters. When the opposing D is tired, Brady hasn't broken a sweat yet. You can't _DO_ that on the Falcons or Packers.
As a bears fan, if you could guarantee me a qb with the stats and longitude Ryan gave the Falcons, it'd be the best qb we've had in 80 years and give us a legit chance to win for a decade plus. He didn't do himself any favors in a couple key situations but by no means is he a choker.
Winning cures a LOT. If not for bad luck we wouldn't be thinking about it being all his fault. His mistakes likely would have been swept under the legacy rug.
Both unlucky and his fault. If Julian Edelman has the ball graze the ground on that miraculous catch, Falcons win SB. And if Ryan makes plays on that last drive, Falcons win SB.
A big bag of both. But he was as you said the stability Atlanta needed especially after Vick went off to the federal prison system. I think he can be in the HOF but the failure to win the SB will definitely haunt him forever alongside others. It’s sad cause he is a very good QB but success does mean a lot. I suppose you can put him in the Marino/Kelly spot I’ve been seeing in comments. Still nothing to take away on Matty Ice when he got going. Had a good amount of years in his career before the wheels started coming off
I love the title because it's makes it sound like such a black and white issue when it's not really. Like it's not all Ryan's fault, but at the same time, when the opposing team is making a comeback, you're looking to anybody else on the team to seal the game.
10:15 in my head saying "why is this shot of terron ward so familiar he was an old 3rd string back of ours I forgot about" trying to remember a big play he made -- and then it immediately became apparent
It's so God damn funny when people say 28-3 was Matt's fault especially when they refer to the last drive. First of all Matt didn't just allow himself to get sacked his offensive line didn't hold their end. The very next play Matt puts them back in field goal range but a holding call once again put Atlanta out of range. There's are lot of reasons why Atlanta lost that Superbowl but Ryan wasn't one of them.

Or blaming Blair Walsh for losing to the Seahawks given he scored all the other points for the Vikings that day lol. I forget what year that was. Pepperidge farm remembers though.
I put Matt Ryan and Philip Rivers in the same category. They were both excellent QB's, who put up big numbers but both of them struggled to control the momentum of important games. They both played great with a lead.... as long as it wasn't too big of a lead. But neither one of them were very good at mounting comebacks. I actually think Rivers and the Chargers were more unlucky overall. Ryan definitely experienced some bad breaks, but the Falcons defenses weren't as bad as the raw statistics might indicate. People need to consider the fact that during the Falcons best seasons, the defense allowed a lot of garbage time stats in games they won. I forget the exact details, but during that Superbowl season, the defense was stifling in the first 3 quarters. They held a lot of teams under 250 yds of total offense until the went into Dime or Prevent defenses in the last 10 minutes. They also ended up on the field more often because the offense was either scoring quickly or committing a horrific turnover. All things considered, they were pretty solid, but circumstances weren't in their favor statistically. Even in the Superbowl, they owned the Patriots. In the 3rd quarter, they even managed to force the Pats to drain 7 minutes off the clock for a measly 3 pts and then got a missed PAT after another long drive at the end of the quarter. If the Falcons could have managed a single FG in the 2nd half, the game would have been over. The fact that every drive ended in a punt or turnover, is what lost the game.... not the defense.
I've sat through a lot of Falcons "Quarterbacks" over the years. Matt Ryan, as much as he is a New-Century Dan Marino, is a top-3 QB for the franchise. Not a high bar to clear, tbh, but he clears it more than most.
When it comes to wins, people always seem to fall into the extremes of "Wins are a QB stat" or vice versa. In reality, it's more of a case-by-case thing. Can't always give one guy on a team of 11 all of the credit, but you also can't blame everything on them either. SB 51 and the Colts vs Vikings games were mostly out of Ryan's control, coaching is a major factor in those losses. Sort of off-topic, but I think the 2023 season showed how important coaching is to player/team success. One guy can't do it by himself.
Biiiiig disagree. Ryan threw 1 TD in that game vs the Vikings and then proceeded to be basically non existent the rest of the game. If anything I put most of the blame on Ryan for that one. He did fine in the super bowl though.
@@pozziboots2608 Brady was in a similar situation in 2021 vs the Bears, they were up 35-3 at halftime. Yeah he contributed more to the lead, but both him and Matt putt up the same number of 2nd half TDs...zero. Both squads only scored a single FG after building the big lead. The difference being the Bucs defense held Chicago scoreless while the Colts defense completely collapsed. Brady didn't even have to finish out the game, he got to sit and chill for the 4th quarter because the defense was playing so well. So just like Brady isn't the reason for Tampa Bay holding on to win, Ryan wasn't the blame for Indy blowing it.
Not only would the Falcons have won the Super Bowl 51, but that offense was about to go down as one of the best ever. They were also on the verge of obliterating 3 HoF quarterbacks (Unless Russell Wilson rode his way out of it) in the playoffs.
That fumble in the Superbowl was on Freeman. He clearly whiffed on a blitz pick up going inside when the pressure and his assignment being the outside defender. Ryan was hit mid throw to a wide open receiver.
Before I watch, there has never been another QB that I have seen in the few games that I watch, that has always put up seeming over 30 points a game and still lose.
Put up 30 points? You're not watching the games. In the Colts-Vikings game, he passed for only 1 easy touchdown. The defense, special teams, and kicker did the rest. In Super Bowl 51, Matt passed for 2 touchdowns. The defense scored with a pick 6. The defense held Tom Brady and the Patriots to 3 points most of the game. Ryan is overrated.
I will always remember Ryan for seeing him in his first career start as a rookie when, with his first pass, threw a TD. I can't think k of any other QB who did that yet I. An name 2 QBs whose first pass was a pick 6 and those 2 are Bretf Favre and Sam Darnold.
nah i disagree with you on him being a HOF, considering Joe flacco who was in the same draft, got a SB ring and he didnt says alot. plus Ryan is always going to be known for massive chokes.
Allow me to throw some stats at you: You want to talk stats. Let’s look at Matt Ryan. He is 8th all time in passing yards. It would take less than a thousand more passing yards for him to be ranked 6th all time. He is above Aaron Rodgers, Eli Manning, John Elway, Matthew Stafford, and Russell Wilson. Pretty good company. Ryan is also 9th all time in passing touchdowns. He is above the same people except for Aaron Rodgers. He is 18th all time in Passer rating. 12th all time if you take away guys who’s careers aren’t 10 years long or more. He is above Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisburger, and Matthew Stafford in that regard. So is he a hall of famer? He has many awards and accolades including MVP, OPOY, OROY, and 4 pro bowls. He was also snubbed of an MVP in a season that was better than his 2016 MVP season. He has 4 4,000 yards seasons, which is tied for 6th all time. In two different seasons he was less than 100 yards away from having 5000 passing yards. Which would’ve made him one of only 10 players to do it. He would be in the company of Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Dan Marino, Patrick Mahomes, Ben Roethlisburger, and others. He would’ve also been one of only 4 players to do it more than once, being tied with Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes with 2. And I know it ain’t fair to talk about what ifs. But come on…that’s pretty damn close. If all of that shit isn’t Hall of Fame worthy then I don’t know what is!
As a falcons fan I love Matt Ryan I hope he makes the hall of fame he would have multiple Super Bowls if he had better defenses and coaching throughout his career 💯
As a falcons fan, I’ve shit talked “Matty Ice” since his rookie season… but lowkey, watching him in indy this season hurt my heart. He’s a good dude and he doesn’t ever give up. It’d be so cool if ATL could get him back on the roster for one last season.
I’m a Falcon’s fan……. Yes Matt Ryan is very talented QB., i also said we should let him go a long ago. He is from Boston College…. Possibly the best QB from Boston College..,
If blame could be placed on one person not named Ryan, it is Thomas Dimitroff. For all that he did to surround Matt with offensive weapons, he knew nothing about building a defense. So many top picks went to guys like Peria Jerry, Duke Riley, Takk McKinley, etc.
If you are a falcons fan 💀 he was nice because it went from vick -> jail, to a rookie in the playoffs and 11-5. That superbowl was soul crushing tho. Not his fault imo. Being a qb is tougher than a $2 steak
Matthew Stafford was always known as Unlucky. Matt Ryan was always Matty Ice. Marino got dissed for not getting a ring and Elway was accused of choking before his final 2 seasons. Ryan’s in good company.
Not Ryan's fault that the Falcons blew a 25 pt. lead to the Pat's as he didn't play on defense which, as we need to remember, is the half of the team that is SUPPOSED to keep the other team from scoring.
Matty Ice is our Dan Marino. He's 7 in all time passing. I remember when he did pass Marino in yards I thought it was spectacular. Matt Ryan Deserved more than he was given for sure, and as a falcons fan I'll always say he's been our best quarterback in history.
Feel bad all you want. He didn't do a single thing that second half. Julio bailed his ass out. He choked that game as much as the rest of the team did. He's a great qb but a perfect example of having every trait but that clutch factor.
Matt Ryan had all the talent in the world and his passing stats are a reflection of his ability. He had arm strength, extra zip on deep passes, IQ, pocket awareness, and good throwing mechanics. He truly became a top tier QB in 2016, his MVP year, and peaked in that season. His 144 passer rating in the first half of Super Bowl 51 was insane! However, Ryan's team had the lead in both playoff games and he never had to play from behind. The Falcons defense collapsed against the Patriots, but he did have the ball in his hands in the final minute of SB51. He could've challenged Kyle Shanahan's playcalling and called a running play instead of a passing play to potentially win the game, but he didn't. With his career stats, MVP season, 4 Pro Bowls, & Offensive Player Of The Year award, he'll probably get into the Hall Of Fame on the second or third ballot, but not on the first. He isn't on the same level as Tom Brady & he never will be.
As a Saints fan I’ve always respect Matt Ryan he’s class act feel bad for him I don’t think it’s his fault he’s been unlucky he hasn’t recover since 28-3 lead in SB defense always failed him I don’t think he’s ever had solid defense in his prime.
Matt Ryan never had any defenses close to Tom Brady’s caliber not saying their comparable bit of you switch their defenses they would both be looked at very differently all time
his career somewhat mirrors Marino. Great QB. Lots of great victories. too many mistakes. lack of running games & decent defenses often caused the downfall.
Believe it or not, there was a time when Matt Ryan constantly made 4th Quarter Comebacks, even led the league at a point, mainly because Atlanta hasn't had a defense in decades.
Call me biased cause he’s my favorite player ever but he’s the most unlucky player in NFL history and the point u made for audibles in the SB he actually was asked this and in the shannahan offense there wasn’t any run plays for the audible just adding to shannahans incompetence but great breakdown
Unlucky. Haven't even watched the vid yet, I'm not a Falcons fan, and even I can say that Matt Ryan may very well be the unluckiest star in NFL history. He should be a first ballot Hall of Famer, but I honestly don't think he'll make it in because his reputation is as one of the greatest choke artists ever. It's such a disgrace that he is seen that way.
I have these types of debates all the time about what makes a player great. Was Jerry Rice an amazing WR because he had Montana and Young? Or were they great QBs because they had Rice? Was Brady an amazing QB because he had Belichick or was Belichick an amazing coach because he had Brady? The key is to see what happens without that player. Brady left NE and still won a SB without Belichick. Belichick has a losing records as a head coach without Brady. The fact that a Brady never had a losing season speaks a lot about how key he is. Some teams win or lose as a team and you can’t point to a particular player. Some teams lose despite having a Hall of Famer. Barry Sander, OJ Simpson, Dan Marino, JJ Watt. So you know it’s not on them. Some teams are stacked to the rafters with talent and can’t get back to the Super Bowl in 28 years of trying, so it’s hard to blame the players. I think Ryan is on the cusp of it’s his fault. Not just in the SB loss, but in the Falcons having a losing record for so many years. He goes to IND and throw 14 TDs and 13 INTs and brings the Colts down. Granted they weren’t a strong team, but it had been a couple years since they were a 4-win team.
Many people forgot that K. Shanahan lost his entire Playbook for 30 minutes during an interview on the Friday before Super Bowl. At 8:25. You also forgot to mention how Devonte Freeman BLATANTLY missed that block that got Matt Ryan sacked out of FG range. Couple plays back M. Sanu wasn't supposed to make that catch so they called a penalty. By the way, did you know M. Ryan's headset was strangely malfunctioning all of a sudden during the 2nd Half. He ran to the sidelines taking his helmet pointing inside to the officials something was wrong. They showed it Live for about 5 seconds and then quickly cut it away. It wasn't Matt Ryan fault. More like the NFL , Commissioner Goddell, Patriots owner Robert Kraft, Coach Bellicheat and Tom Shady had dynasty of deceit to uphold. 🤷🏾♂️ A lot of under the table deals and silent-lip contract happen in the sports world. The Super Bowl being the biggest of them all, is a ocean of them. 🤷🏾♂️
Not quite sure about the hall of fame take here. A lot of people don’t think Phillip rivers makes it. Rivers has more passing yards and touchdowns than Ryan and was a pro bowler 4 more times than Ryan. Since 2000 Brady, Peyton, Brees, Big Ben, Rodgers, Eli and Mahomes all have a better hall of fame resume. Stafford and Rivers maybe too. Hell andrew luck retired before 30 and has just as many pro bowls as Ryan.
As a diehard falcons/Ryan fan….to be apart of SO MANY BLOWN LEADS there’s no way you don’t play a part in it. It’s a tough thing to see but so was 28-3 🤷♂️ we’re cursed
Is Matt Ryan... Dan Marino? Unquestionably great passer who missed out on a ring because, despite their obvious talent, they never truly had a full team around them. Peyton Manning almost fell into this camp, as well, but managed to escape it exactly twice. Marino and Ryan never quite got there, but their arms still got them pretty darn far.
The fumble was a missed block not his fault the sack did not push them out of field goal range a 15 yard hold penalty did that he played good in the Super Bowl
That Super Bowl fumble is only 1 person’s fault and that’s Devonta Freeman. What is Matt Ryan supposed to do when his RB does not block? All Freeman had to do was pick up the blocker and not stand around

It's my favorite line from the "History of the Atlanta Falcons" series. Saying that the Edelman circus catch that kept the comeback drive alive was "The Devil signs his work".
he’d be a first ballot hofer if he had won super bowl 51. i wish the man had good defensive support like manning and brady but he still showed how great he was.
What? Peyton Manning almost never had good defensive support, dude. Or are you talking about Eli?
@@commanderjoj6426 Offense did its job by putting up 30+ points, we rarely hear how the defense collapsed in the second half since its easier to blame the bigger name with Kyle Shanahan
You sure about that? Is Russell Wilson a 1st ballot HOfer? Nobody's won more games than Wilson since being deafted....
What costly mistakes? Matt Ryan did crack under pressure, that’s all fake bs narratives
Ryan will always be my favorite quarterback of all time.
Mine too
I say Matt Ryan is the Charlie Brown of football.
Nah that’s Tony Romo
Isn’t Charlie brown the Charlie Brown of football
The script writers just hated the guy with two first names it’s just that simple 😂 (seriously though lifelong falcons fan, it was mostly the team not him)
What about Tom Brady? Two first names but he has still won a ton of Super Bowls.

Matt had some of the worst luck I’ve ever seen. To be involved in the biggest Super Bowl choke and regular season choke is ridiculous
When he was on the colts, it was his fault, but otherwise it’s purely unlucky
I mean he just hit a wall hard plus the deal on the Colts

I'm almost certain he's getting into the hall of fame but it probably won't be first ballot
Nahhh he wasn't worth 10 years....he didn't do anything chris chandler didn't do, we didn't keep him for 10 years
As someone who is from Australia and has only followed the nfl for 3 years, ryan is my favourite player. Dude deserved better I also wish I could've seen his glory days

@teejayman215 yeah I have and it's sad knowing I missed the glory days and what could've been if he had a defensive capable of holding a lead
Once a Falcon, always a Falcon
What a curse
Yes sir!!!! Heeeeey…wait a second!
always
I like Matt Ryan for giving the Falcons quarterback stability, and I don't believe he's a choker, but he's not a Hall of famer like some make him out to be. His stats are good, but he was only a top 5 QB in the league like 3 times, he often takes unnecessary sacks at crucial times (like in Super Bowl 51), and he had some pretty good offensive weapons like Julio Jones and Michael Turner.
He probably will get in the Hall of Fame because of how easy it is to get in nowadays, but imo, he's Hall of Very Good at best.
Takes unnecessary sacks???? Are you dumb? Dude never had and o-line help. He's best offensive lineman was Alex Mack
Morale of the story defense wins championships.
Exactly. Offense wins games, but defense wins championships.
Unfortunately, Atlanta hasn't gotten that message in decades.
As a Falcons fan I will always say F Bobby Petrino
Same
Truth is, Petrino did the Falcons and their fans a big favor by quitting and running off into the night.
Now do this for Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, and other hall of famers who never got a ring.
Secret Base - Untitled is what you're asking for.
Those videos already exist on other channels
Matt seems like a nice guy, maybe even a hall of famer, but will be known for 28-3 and the biggest regular season choke with Indianapolis
He was never outlandish he was just a leader. I guess I can compare him to Jim Kelly.
@@ajevans1422 Kelly, Ryan & Aaron Rodgers should _all_ be considered great QBs who were pretty much handicapped by inept coaches. Those Bills teams had *explosive* potential to blow out almost every game, but Marv Levy was stuck in the '70s with his mentality & would be down three scores in the 3rd quarter standing on the sidelines saying "you need to wear down the opposition by running the ball."
Ryan had Shanahan who thinks football is like hockey & the players on the field can *only play* offense OR defense not both.
Lafleur refused to consider it, & for nine weeks we were treated to insipid, uninteresting Matt Lafleur-ball with no runs & dimes thrown by Aaron Rodgers getting dropped every drive. All because he refused to listen.
@@choosecarefully408 excellent information and insight
He’s both extremely unlucky and his own worse enemy
As a bears fan, if you could guarantee me a qb with the stats and longitude Ryan gave the Falcons, it'd be the best qb we've had in 80 years and give us a legit chance to win for a decade plus. He didn't do himself any favors in a couple key situations but by no means is he a choker.
I have always liked Matt Ryan and thought he was a wonderful quarterback for the Falcons. I haven’t followed him since he left.
Winning cures a LOT. If not for bad luck we wouldn't be thinking about it being all his fault. His mistakes likely would have been swept under the legacy rug.
“Get fucking set!!”
Both unlucky and his fault.
If Julian Edelman has the ball graze the ground on that miraculous catch, Falcons win SB.
And if Ryan makes plays on that last drive, Falcons win SB.
People will never remember that big pass to Julio Jones before the Edelman catch.
I think that it really is Matt Ryan’s fault for not being so lucky…just like how it’s Tom Brady’s fault for being soooooo lucky pre-2022.

I appreciate this video. I am a huge falcons Homer and was a big Ryan fan. I still respect the dude and was really hoping his trade to Indy would prove a lot of haters wrong. I rooted for him to succeed in his new home... but history is history.
Blaming a QB for his team blowing a 21 or 28 pt lead is like blaming your pitcher for losing 1-0 or 2-1, or blaming your hitters for losing 10-9.
The defense gave up 19 pts in the 4th quarter alone. It is laughable to try and absolve them of their part in the lose of the game.
@@ignotouno523 In turnovers and horrid field position and the offense having almost zero time of possession
I've sat through a lot of Falcons "Quarterbacks" over the years.
Matt Ryan, as much as he is a New-Century Dan Marino, is a top-3 QB for the franchise.
Not a high bar to clear, tbh, but he clears it more than most.
I'd argue Matt is the best Falcons Quarterback ever.
he's our best QB. doesn't have much competition for the title

Even in a competition with himself, Matt Ryan chokes against Matt Ryan and settles for a tie
I will always remember Ryan for seeing him in his first career start as a rookie when, with his first pass, threw a TD. I can't think k of any other QB who did that yet I. An name 2 QBs whose first pass was a pick 6 and those 2 are Bretf Favre and Sam Darnold.
Highly underrated. He's past his prime now unfortunately. His career was wasted with poor defenses and run support.
nah i disagree with you on him being a HOF, considering Joe flacco who was in the same draft, got a SB ring and he didnt says alot. plus Ryan is always going to be known for massive chokes.
Ad begins at 0:30 and ends at 1:35.
Allow me to throw some stats at you:
You want to talk stats.

I haven't heard him being called Matty Ice in a long time.

Another NFL record for Matt Ryan. First qb to lose multiple games after maintaining a lead of 25+ points
its a little bit of both when you look at it. dont wanna be cliche but as the qb its all on him.
Imagine he won Super Bowl 51
Great video! I enjoyed it
As a Saints fan I’ve always respect Matt Ryan he’s class act feel bad for him I don’t think it’s his fault he’s been unlucky he hasn’t recover since 28-3 lead in SB defense always failed him I don’t think he’s ever had solid defense in his prime.
As a falcons fan, I completely blame Kyle Shanahan for the SB loss (lost another one for the 49ers).
Matt Ryan was nothing but solid for the falcons
90 percent legendarily bad luck, 10 percent his own fault
Okay, this is my last comment. All I have to say is amazing video man.
Unlucky. There’s 21 other guys out there that need to step up
Matt Ryan never had any defenses close to Tom Brady’s caliber not saying their comparable bit of you switch their defenses they would both be looked at very differently all time
his career somewhat mirrors Marino. Great QB. Lots of great victories. too many mistakes. lack of running games & decent defenses often caused the downfall.
Matthew Thomas Ryan. 3 first names?!
You cant blame a blown lead all on the quarterback, a lot of it is the defense. Its a team thing.
Matty Ice is a great nickname. Considering he freezes under pressure.
His defense is doing him so dirty 😂
Whoa whoa whoa... What about the XFL?😂
Matt Ryan is my generations Dan Marino
A lot of under the table deals and silent-lip contract happen in the sports world. The Super Bowl being the biggest of them all, is a ocean of them. 🤷🏾♂️
Did we stop to think, Ryan is the best of the Good.
I agree like honestly he’s just not that good. That offense he had on the falcons is what made him look good.
As a diehard falcons/Ryan fan….to be apart of SO MANY BLOWN LEADS there’s no way you don’t play a part in it. It’s a tough thing to see but so was 28-3 🤷♂️ we’re cursed
There's the Comeback Kid, but than, there's also the Letback Kid.
Fun fact: Matt Ryan was just following the script
A 100% true
Is Matt Ryan... Dan Marino? Unquestionably great passer who missed out on a ring because, despite their obvious talent, they never truly had a full team around them. Peyton Manning almost fell into this camp, as well, but managed to escape it exactly twice. Marino and Ryan never quite got there, but their arms still got them pretty darn far.
As a life long dolphins fan I was soo pissed that they didn't draft him
The fumble was a missed block not his fault the sack did not push them out of field goal range a 15 yard hold penalty did that he played good in the Super Bowl
I thought Dan Q was a defensive guy?
That Super Bowl fumble is only 1 person’s fault and that’s Devonta Freeman. What is Matt Ryan supposed to do when his RB does not block? All Freeman had to do was pick up the blocker and not stand around
