i 'm from the u.k-lived in Guatemala for 10 yrs-i got held up twice at gunpoint in the 'nice areas' (z 14, z7, )of the city. My girlfriend was extorted by a gang too - they followed her, knew about her job, family members and we had to leave the country. i have business owner friends in Antigua who have also had extortion problems and also children kidnapped. i lived close to the centre in z2 and regularly heard guns being fired in the distance in the invaded territory land where the gangs rule. The children have little opportunity to education and the gang life can look glamorous to some of them. i'm sure you were probably watched by informants in z18 and thats why people would not talk to you. the police are powerless to these gangs and even have to buy their own bullets for their pistols. its a sad reality because the country and people are wonderful as you have encountered.

It's somewhere I've only been back to 3 times since I left in '88. I definitely never film or on my cell when I'm there. The city is divided into zones. Each zone has a number of neighborhoods. Zona 18 has many neighborhoods and some of them are more dangerous than others. Also there are gated neighborhoods that you can only access if you live there or someone who lives there signs you in. I have no idea what neighborhood you went to. I don't recognize what mercado you went to but it looks like you were in the main streets for the most part. They are not exactly safe but are not that dangerous either. Going inside the alleys that's where the danger is. I lived close to Colonia Limon and knew people in Colonia Maya. I only went to places in those neighborhoods where I knew someone. As long as you stay on the main roads you'll be fine. In any neighborhood you go to; you will find that most people are actually friendly and are trying to make an honest living.

omg man, I used to live in Guatemala zone 6 and when I went to do my practice in psychology to zone 18 the center was sorrounded by military men, because is very dangerous, i never had a problem there because women and workers are the target in those areas. in the place you were walking is dangerous but not that dangerous if you go to the inner places because there is were the bad guys sell their drugs and some other stuff.

Just this week, 3 teenage girls (14-17 y/o) where caught dismembering another girl in zone 18, news speculated gang initiation. Killings and kidnappings are reported regularly in that zone. Like a month ago, a young man was gunned in a market very similar to where you were walking, and another case of 3 people gunned in a house just a couple of weeks ago (and those are not the only recent cases there).
Violence doesn't show on the surface as you experienced, until you are caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, and hits happen quickly. Many gang members here are crazy enough to kill just to steal a phone or a few quetzales.
Stay safe and don't push your luck too much in those areas!

This is how you know this zone is dangerous AF, people don’t talk specifics! I know this is going to sound racist as hell but I’m going to say it. I would love to visit these places, but I’m sure my Asian a$$ would not make it out of there in one piece or with everything that I had going in. So, why would I risk it?!
I really appreciate your trust in people, man. It’s so easy to say everyone in the hood is bad, but to have faith in the good people that are in that zone and to actually enter it, says a lot about you as a person. And thanks for showing zone 18.

In your adventure you stayed in the open busy populated areas and I feel you were scoped out by the gang/gangs and given a green light, you were not a threat and it was not worth the trouble to them BUT NOT RECOMMENDED TO ANYONE TO GO VISIT.

My guy you are really ballsy. As a Guatemalan or in general. If ppl are advising you to not go to a certain place because of how dangerous it is then dont go. Theres a reason even locals are giving u a heads up. Your life is not worth views for your channel. I know you come from a good place in your heart but u gotta stop once someone gives u an answer. Dont keep on asking on "porqe es peligroso, o zona Roja" they live there, you dont. Maybe that day u got lucky another day u wont.
    Stay safe out there brother
