you are on to something. looking through old videos and blogs and comments and past interviews of the two it seems like luke and shannen were together at some point before their marriages to other people like say between 1991-1992. I think part of their fights and arguments were based off unresolved tension and feelings for each other after things ended. they were so young. he had to request to work with jennie because acting opposite shannen was becoming too difficult. when two people breakup how is possible afterwards to play a couple when you are trying to move on? it wasnt until later in life they reconnected. based off what jennie and gabrielle said luke are shannen are rip together. they really did love each other. the ones that got away in life but now are finally together.

But Shannen was completely erratic snap marriage decision, marrying someone she’s only known for couple weeks… then divorcing him not long after. So while I have heard and read from producers Luke asked to work with the blonde (as they put it) because apparently he didn’t want the character to get complacent and wanted to add depth and not become predictable …, however, you make an excellent point about the mixed feelings that could’ve been generated if they did actually get together at one point etc etc, and he just needed to put space working with her, hence his request to move over to Jennie character. If you watch their body language at the 1992 people’s choice awards when Aaron Spellings was taking questions from media, Luke was so touchy with her and hugged her from the back very comfortably for a very long time and even kissed her neck -like body language was screaming to me I think Shannen was just all over the place, whereas Luke is a real one-woman type person. Like i really don’t think he was wild and sporadic like Shannen. I think the guy was real lover, even though the world of women were at his feet.

And at that age, unless you’re very mature to handle and steer emotion and ego in a balanced way (which I definitely think Luke was as opposed to Shannen at the time, just based on listening back to various of his interviews, he’s always sounded humble and level headed)…. So I think conflicts like that could arise. But also make no mistake, Shannen was very confident and a huge flirt I believe, and she wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, so all that mixed up in terms of how she conducted herself with a more mature Luke Perry could’ve caused various contrary mixed feelings, arguments etc. … then you need to be able to not mix personal feelings with professional - etc etc
