We visited Ragusa twice during the last year. If I may ask, why are most of the chuches built so high up with so many steps leading to the church itself. We noticed this not only in Ragusa, but also in other parts of Sicily, like Noto. Thank you

We asked a friend who is going to become a priest in a few months, and this is what he had to say:
"It depends on the church, there could be different explanations... During the Middle Age, local rulers used monastery-fortress to control the surronding areas, both from enemies and rioting paesants.
Some others were built specifically for pilgrimages, since "going up" while making physical efforts represented a penitence journey.
In general, though, most churches and monasteries are built high up for the following reason: building a religious site far from the urban life detaches it from everyday's "noise". This is not different from what Jesus used to do when climbing mounts to look for peace and silence to pray.
It is common in Christian religion for disciples to look for isolated mountains and woods to establish a connection with what God created".

Good morning. I am in Malta, no far from Sicily..
I tend to accept the priest's version, though haviing visited Italy a lot of times, I am aware that most monasteries are built on high grounds. Surely enough for the most part these are cloistered priests or nuns..
Noto for instance has two, not one, cloistered convents close to the church, so sure enough, they were not built on high rounds.:)@@LostInItaly

The Val di Noto or Iblean area, from Ragusa to Siracusa is one of the most beautiful in all of Italy. Only in the last 2 decades has it been getting its due recognition. Very proud to come from and live in this paradise on Earth.

I was in Italy, 30 years ago in Milano, Torino and some few more places, forgot the names, so sorry.
One village we was by passing, late evening there was a bakery we went in, I will never forget the bucket of best smells ever. I wanted stay in that bakery and that village for ever 😊🌺🍑
But I have learned through the years, to prepare Italian kitchen,
and eat almost each day 😊🍑

I’m trying to book an hotel in Ragusa for 2 nights in November and I’m not sure which part of the town should i stay? Confusing especially i won’t be driving, arriving by train from Syracuse. Does the old part of town called Ibla is in the bottom or the top? Can’t figure it out! Sorry for these questions but you have lived there for a few months, you would know! Thank you

The oldest part of the city is the one we show starting from minute 03:11, and is also called "Ragusa Ibla" or just "Ibla".
From the newest part, you'll need to descend the stairs you see in the video; once there, we walked from bottom to the top.
Can we take a train from Palermo to Ragusa? Or only a bus? Thank you!

We have always only travelled by bus to Ragusa, but after a quick look at Trenitalia website there appear to be a couple of options for you to get there by train. We would suggest to refer to Trenitalia website or app for more info :)
