Pieris Japonica, Cloud Pruning 2021 Part 1 September 22

  • I normally cloud prune this in June after all new growths have turned green. With the heat waves and my eye surgery, I am doing this is September. I have more to prune off and there will be less growth after the prune. Also, all the flowers for next year will be pruned off. I am good with that sine I prefer the clouds over the flowers. A give or take.
Pieris grows fast and uneven. To maintain the clouds, pruning is needed every year. Otherwise the clouds will be gone (like at the beginning of the video). Good thing is you can always go back on this decision. I find the work manageable since its growth rate also make it very forgiving. No worries about mistake/permanent damage.

What varietal of pieris is this?

I do not have the variety but guess this is the most common one around. Purchased long time ago when I had neither knowledge nor budget 😊 Sorry!

How old is your Pieris and do you know the best location to plant one (sunny, partial sun, partial shade)? Great work!

Must have planted about 20 years ago. It was such a small plant from a 4 inch pot. In our coastal zone 8, it take full to part sun. Thanks for your comments!

Hi there. I love the blooms which is why I got this plant for winter interest. If I don’t want to cut off blooms when is the best time I should prune to shape? In late Winter or Spring? I get confused. Thank you.

Prune right after it has done blooming. Next year’s flowers have not formed (although not visible) so it is safe to prune without any risk of removing next season’s blooms. Happy pruning!
