- Another visit down to the Cerro Gordo Ghost town and silver mine with @GhostTownLiving and Brent Underwood! On this trip our mission is to go down deep into the Union Mine and gather some high grade silver and lead ore. To do this we need to descend over 400' underground on a hoist from the 1860's! Once we get to the ore face we high grade out some very rich galena ore and bring it back to the surface! My mission is to make something cool for Brent out of the lead and silver, any ideas??? Sorta amazed they didn't just turn the whole mountain into an open pit, like they did elsewhere! Probably still more little hot pockets hidden than you could shake a stick at. Fascinating stuff, as always, Jason.
Back then they could have, but they perhaps didnt feel there was enough valuable ore to justify that expense. I dont know much about mining in general and less so about open pit mining, but typically all decisions come down to cost.
I suppose it's a much different calculation now, with modern heavy equipment, than it was then. With a bunch of manual labor back then, how many man hours are you paying to remove gangue rock to dig a giant pit, vs targeting the ore underground? Those sorts of considerations.

I used to work at United Keno Hill Mines up in the Yukon. It is a lead, zinc, and silver mine and Elsa is the main camp and crusher where they extract the ore from the muck. In the last month that I was there, they tried a new process of floating the ore using cyanide in the bubbler tanks. When they took a sample and poured it over the waffle board there was a fine line of gold at the top, then the lead,zinc, and silver. The company didn't even know that there was flower gold in the ore, but there was enough for them to re-mine the slurry that they had pumped back into the mines. I don't know if the mines are still operating as this was 46 years ago. I just thought that maybe you guys should set up a crusher and bubbler tank and test some ore. If there is flower gold in the ore, that mine could be worth a fortune. I just figured that you might like this bit of information. GOOD LUCK with your ghost town and good fortunes with the mine.

The amount of effort, cost and time involved in mining it and hauling it up & out to where you can refine it. The cost of the time, materials & fuels to refine it all for $20 spot per ounce for silver today is just criminal. A great hobby. All hobbies cost money. Fun to watch. Thanks for taking me along.

It is lighter than a framing hammer. Yes, eye protection, ear protection and lung protection. Maybe those things take away from the immediacy of the the mining experience.

SELL SCRAP WOOD! 2 years ago the Kiwanis Ski Club in Iron Mountain, MI replaced a wooden ski jump to a new state of the art one. In the process we took ALL the old wood and made things with them, one item was plaques which were laser printed, Some of that wood could be cut down to small wall mount type pieces and sold with art on them.

He's a great guide. Great hearing the history and details. Not much actual ore mining though. Drill and blast. Muck it out to the surface. Not much heavier than shoveling Galena though. Put in some winches and carts. You can't carry it all out in your hands. Good air though. Great video, thanks for producing it.

Thank You very much for showing this video, I need to subscribe to his channel but I'm almost afraid to because of how much it will take me back to my family roots! I'm 55 and my grandfather and great grandfather were miners that went after galena in the southwest Missouri area that includes Kansas and Oklahoma, right in that corner of the state. Growing up dad told me stories of being poor and knowing how to use carbide as a light source because batteries were too expensive. He learned from his dad that if it started to get too hot to throw it away from you because it was about explode and told me of a time it was about to happen in a car several buddies and him were driving in while running trot lines. It exploded just after it hit the ground outside the car! Miners used that in a small lamp strapped to their head and you could still buy it in the 50's at a hardware store in my area. Those men back in the day had stones the size of bowling balls, that was their only light source, and it was volatile if not used correctly!
So nice to see footage from the actual mine! Very interesting! Want to see actual working here and dig up some real ore!))

Those are carbide pictographs from the Chinese miners duck ment l9w ceilings, remember English wasn't a known language back then amongst the pesents,, there for the bathrooms were marked by a backside painting

You have power at the 700 for the pump . I think it would be freaking awesome to try to power up some of the levels with some led lights . I’m willing to bet you probably just have to turn on some of the switch boxes on the wall at each level . And maybe change the fuses inside the switch boxes . I wish I was close to you . I would volunteer my time to get the mine glowing bright. I don’t think it would be to much of a hard project. I think it would just look beautiful all lit up

The Roman Empire increasingly debased their currency to the point it had very little silver in it. It would be cool if you would get hand dies created and strike Cerro Gordo rounds with planchets made from your lead/silver alloy. Daniel Carr in Colorado is known for his many designs in this area.
I would literally quit my job and hand mine ore for these guys. Better than being a sheet metal mechanic by far

What a great Video. I would suggest that Brent buy himself a 3lb small sledge hammer or three. a coupe shorter but wider bite chisels and a bigger hammerdrill. With several chisels you can embed them into a line and take off the chunks you want.

I always like watching this channel for the mining and smelting adventures. One thing I would love to see. On here the chemistry of smelting is used to get the precious metals. There is another channel I watch where a refiner is using chemicals to get precious. It would be cool to see how much precious metals could be extracted chemically vs smelting. At the same time, it would be cool to see what waste is left behind. The channel I am talking about is sreetips in case someone gets the idea for another colab. 😛

So got a wacky idea just now. Hear me out. Take all the lead from processing the Galina and make a big Ole pickaxe statue that would great people as they pull into Cerro Gordo. A signpost would work greet too. Copper plate that bad boy and let nature put a patina on it. 👌
