We call them HDMI cables, and DVI cables... They are just different terminations.
can you remake thes video, it s old now...
Yeah
It would be nice to see a remake xD
cool
Do a remake please, it's relevant for sure
He seems so happy.....it actually made me smile :D
Rj45 is a terminator, not a cable. You're not likely to see it used on anything other than twisted pair ethernet, but I think I have seen it done before.
Often cables terminated with RJ45 are re-terminated with RJ11 and used to pass phone line signal through. Usually used in situations where the original phone line is setup for something else such as an alarm system.
I agree it's quite easy to distinguish between the two: Cable is a super-soldier from the future that was trained from birth to be what he became... Terminator is "a cybernetic organism, living tissue over metal endoskeleton from the future, programmed from manufacture to be what it became.
can be used for tv signals too
talk about CAT.7 please!
CAT8
Good cables and jacks will have gold plating on the connectors. This helps with conductivity as gold does not oxidize, but it is vulnerable to dust interfering.
3:18 did linus just fall, die and then comeback? he is the messiah for all tech stuff after all?
ok, this is by far the best video you guys made. I was actually looking for some information and got that and tons of laugh. Thanks!
I love these videos....I learn so much from these so keep it up!!
this is all the information i wanted in a single, less than 4min video. nice
If you want higher speeds , try avoiding the cables with stranded wires; when comparing stranded wire to hard wired cables there is a speed difference. ( according to the network tester )
Linus, did you considered Cat 7 with Terra connectors or optic fibre from workstation to server, just to go as fast as possible?
Stranded cables are supposed to be used only for patch cords, not the structured cabling. So, you'd use stranded between a device and the keystone jack and solid between jacks. Always!
You Really have shared very explanatory information in very short time. Good Going.
lol, I could go with 500m cable since my internet only delivers 2 mb/s ...
2 mb/s is a lot
miniscule butts
+OldePak Maybe in some village in Nigeria
+Finnishnorsu in turkey we have 800 kb/s as normal
Wow that is pretty slow ! My family is getting 1000/1000 mbit/s network. I live in Norway
THANKS!!!!!! I performed the scratching tip an that doubled my bandwidth!!! No joke, I thought my cable was damaged, THANKS LINUS!!!
i think it would be cool if you guys did an episode on the layout of a gpu pcb and what the purpose of the different components are on it such as the vrm's and gddr modules so ppl could look at the pcb and know what there looking at and feel like a boss
I'd love to see the next techquickie about choosing when is a good time to either build a computer or wait until the newest parts come out.
Love these videos, keep them coming!
Thanks a lot for this video. It was super quick and helpful.
We need an updated version of this. All data present is still very relevant and useful. Just wanna see if there are any new changes to the cable categories. No one runs fiber optic inside their house, right?
this is the most informative video i have ever seen !
Love these short videos. There perfect for my short attention span.
Hmm? what? Sorry, I wasn't listening.
great video, learnt a lot, great ending, love these videos.
I watched that fall literally 9 times. That was grate!
As usual, it is fun and educative.. .Thanks
I am glad I looked down through the comments to find someone else posting that the switch in the middle would act as a repeater to the devices connected to it.
Thanks for giving me another Tech quickie :)
a solid vid as always Linus
Good deam bruv I'm doing courseworks from you man you got everything i need.
Hi @techquickie can you make a video explain the specification of switch before i buy one?
Wow this video really useful till today
I understood everything he said in this video. Thank you CTech certification. :D
Doubt ill get an answer on a video from over 5 years ago, but doe coupler's decrease performance? I am currently renting. I have my router and modem upstairs so I can hardwire my PC. However I want better performance with my connection for gaming on my PS4 downstairs. As we are renting we were limited to how we could set up our home network. If I were to connect two cat5e cables together via a coupler would I see a drastically different connection speed? Right now my PS4 is online via wifi, but connection is not at a preferable speed for online gaming. Also are there ratings for speed transference through these couplers or are they pretty standard? I see packs of 5 and even 6 of them on Amazon, but don't want to cheap out if there is a difference.
Thanks for the information!
Good primer
I would have like to seen a differentiation of:
the number of conductors (vs # of used), twisted pairs, shielded and unshielded, plenum rated and drop rated cable...
what the categories mean,
what 'Ethernet' is (doesn't just refer to category of wire and terminations), but we tend to use it interchangeably to describe the cable itself.
where 'RJ' comes from,
Power Over Ethernet
These aren't all necessary, but it would only take a bit to explain a bit deeper (still as fast as poss)
1. The distance you mentioned is the max distance but may not always be true. If for example the source pc has a low quality card it may even have problems at half the distance. Some devices don't have enough juice to push the distance to the limit which in fact true for probably half if not more of the consumer grade products. Build in cards of older MOBO's have this issue frequently.
2. interference: heavy machinery or power lines close by can 1 reduce distance, 2 cause dropped packets but both would mostly be found in a industrial environment or badly wired buildings.
3. there is a CAT 6a, 7, 8, 8.1 standard but only up to CAT 7 is used these days but your right 5e and 6 are most commonly used
4. using 5e/6 makes no noticeable performance difference at short distances (up no 10-20m) but i have personally noticed a difference above 10 meters but only IF you have high-end gear and a good network setup
5. If you only surf the net and you dont have a 1gb internet link there would not be a noticable in what cable you use but a CAT 6 cable might give you slightly better Latency but the difference is so SMALL that its near impossible to verify in some cases
6.many other things but these are the basics
NR 1 IS VERY important so keep it in mind
Gold plating i would say is over kill and 99/100 times you will just throw away money on over priced cables. If your cable is oxidizing your pc is NOT safe or there is to much moisture where ever you have your pc again NOT Safe.
Please do a series's where you explain what to look for when buying a certain product. Such a hard drives, you look for capacity, rpm, cache, etc.
That new outro
Verry informative, thanks!
My problem so far was an old cable cat5 limited to 100Mbps :x
Ordering a gigabyte one (fingers croossed)
Gigabit*
Gb was designed for CAT5 and even predates 5e. It was CAT3 that was limited to 10 Mb.
I don't know why im so surprised to see a linus video being used by my online fundamentals networking tech class
Hahahah that fall in the end, so funny :D Linus made a perfect fall sound
excellent info, thanks
hey linus great vid! can you also have an episode on how Internet Providers gets their internet??
If I get an ethernet socket installed in a room in my house far away from the router will the cable be run from the area the router is located in to the desired room, or is there somewhere else these cables come from?
+Teknium The cable will run from the desired room to wherever your router is located. If it's less than 100m (328ft), then you don't have to worry about anything. If it's more than 100m, then you would need to move your router somewhere closer, but I doubt your house needs more than a football field's length of cable to connect your router to your room, even if they're on opposite ends of the house.
Can you please do a guide on how to know if you're PC can handle certain games of choice before buying them. BTW awesome outro!
Just an idea! Could you build a Playlist of all you videos that may be helpful for the A+ exam?
do an episode on power supplies. what do watts mean. what are rails. what does 80+ bronze silver gold mean/
what size do you need? how to diagonose a failer?
the does and donts?
Can you please share your experience with Cat 6 round vs Cat 6 flat cables ?
some recommendations for network card.....!!!......Netis,tenda,tp link???...for pci or pcie ports....and whether it is important at all
It's interesting to see that this video was posted just a little over 6 years ago considering that there is a cat7 Ethernet wire now.
I have an 8 year old motherboard and I was wondering does the motherboard you have affect the ethernet speed that you ultimately can get also? You know the way that older motherboards would have older 801.11 standard capabilities so your wifi speed would be affected due to the motherboard having an older wifi standard built into it. I'm wondering is this the case with the ethernet ports that belong to older motherboards such as the one that I have? Thanks
Can you go over what is best for gamers:
STP, UTP, or FTP
Wire Guage: 24 AWG vs 23 AWG
or does it not really matter?
I'm running a cheapo, ebay, Cat5, 100ft, so I figure that it matters because of the distance.
Would I get any better performance out of a Cat6, more shielding, or Wire Gauge?
I play rocket league regularly and my ping sits around 70-90, so I thought this may be the issue.
However, I don't want to buy a $50 cable with no better results.
Do you have any video to evalute Ethernet switches, Receivers.
Love your style BTW
Hey have you done a video walk through on SLI NVIDIA Dual graphics or quad graphics card set up, or even the differences between the different GPU benchmarks. It might clear things up as they are getting into quad digit cards now. Also I am setting up a new computer and I have a GTX 980 GDDR5 4GB (needless to say I cant afford another 599.00 GTX 980 card) However it may due some good as you may only need a GPU that is a 980 series and the the card may not matter, however I am not sure. Do you know about this, or have you don't a video already?
Thank you, really useful.
Do a video on power-line vs wireless Internet access
Thanks
These are awesome purely for the entertainment value :)
I don't even care what he says, they're just cool videos about things most of us already know.
Falling was better than the derpy, happy popup, good job swiching it up.
You should do one showing how to crimp on RJ-45 connectors to make your own custom-length network cables. That would be a good follow-up to this vid.
Are network cards worth getting for general internet usage? Like not home networking but just for internet and gaming?
need help making a build
should i put a network card pci or just go with the motherboard one would it make a diffrence
isnt a switch an active device then it doesnt matter if there is a 5m cable next in it?
+TheXSairam That's true. After 100m you need a switch, then you can go on with the next 100m but not more than 7 times...After 7 switches you will get problems with the delay of the router witch have to "route" you to the next point, e.g. the Internet.
the 7 switch thing isn't neccessarily true. That's only if you are using all Layer 3 switches that are handling the routing. If they are simply just 'switching' and not routing. If you're thinking of the legacy routing protocal RIP, that was a 15 hop limit and is now redundancy as most link layer routing is done over IGRP/EIRGP which by default is a 100 hop limit but can be configured up to 255.
Hopefully clears some confusion!
Well done! The outro made me laugh :P
Did that ending just happen? Too Good
so are the ports the same or what? also my motherboard said it has a LAN (RJ45) but the thing i need to plug it in to, has a cat5e, would it work if i connected the 2? plz answer would help loads
3:17 how I get out of bed
Lmao
When you find out that your mobo doesn't support OC'ing
😂😂😂😂
Linus, network interface card, worth it or no? I don't transfer much stuff over the network, and my motherboard has on-board gigabit, so would it improve anything to get one? (for gaming of course)
You guys should do a video on network switches
thank you, very helpful
RJ45 is the name of the plug not the whole cable, the cable name is Ethernet Cable
You should do a guide on how to rund diagnostics on you hardware
Damn even in 2021 this information is relevant. Learned a bit. 👍
Great video.
On my Computer I have an Ethernet connected. There is one amber light blinking The other light however is a solid red for me and not green, most likely indicating an issue I assume. Now its not a problem with my desktop I don't think but it could be the Ethernet cable I'm using. I went to a friend's house and used their cable and the red light was now green. But now I'm back at my place with the same static red light. I tried other cables. Is this an issue? I would appreciate input. Thanks!
You're so enthusiastic.
I have a 75ft ethernet cable and i want to hook it up to my bedroom, it is a cat5 cord, Will that cord draw bandwidth from my router?
please make video on what is difference between 1000BaseT and 1000BaseTx .... what is T & TX ?
Can we have a tech quickie on what to look for when buying a PSU?
Techquickie + Linus = youtube money. Thumbs up.
There might be a couple of faults in here. Linus mentions the length of the cable, like running 100m, then another 5 out to another device. That's no problem. the lenght is between 2 components, so a 4 port switch can run cables at 100m to each of the components. No problem.
And there is headroom. We had a cable that was 124m long which worked, but not at 135m, we added a switch at 124m and now it works. This cable is laying in the worst possible way too. (too expensive for fiber for the usage)
Does the wire have any tight bends switch to a ribbon cable
7 years later, and RUclips wants to recommend *this*
I mean he hasn't really changed much
How many Cat5e couplers can I use without messing up performance?
Can your internet provider see whether you are using the cat5, cat6 or cat6e cable?
My router is 10/100/1000 ported and my motherboard is an asus p8p67 delux. Would I benefit from using cat8 vs cat6a?
Can you do an update on RJ45 ethernet cables? I bought a Cat7 cable and I was wonderinv if you could do a video on it. It would be a nice video if you could explain what makes the Cat7 cable different from the Cat5e and Cat6 cables
Tighter twist in the cable that provides a better signal with less interference.
Thanks Chris!
I have a question, if I connect a Ethernet cable to my Xbox will it take all the energy.( I live with my 6 people family and I have bad wifi connection)plz answer
can u do a video on CAS Latency too!!
infiband vs Ethernet? really which is better and which would be better for a home network that is useing a NAS for a media sever?
Can i use 4 wire (2 pair) ethernet wire to connect gigabit router from isp for 20 mbps plan?
hey linus can i use a cable for more than 15mtrs?
I still use thicknet 10BASE5..
Some CAT6 cables are rated 400mhz and some are 550mhz, how does this fit into it? Is 550 better or worse then 400?
Thanks a lot!
Good job thanks
Can i transfer 5 mbps internet connection from one main router to secondary router through distance 75 m
i personally put Cat6E cables through my house... i know it was overkill.. but that way it allowed for the cable to degrade over time and still keep my performance
Can some1 pls suggest me some good ethernet cable brands?dunno what brand to choose, also i m going to change my current 4m cat5 cable to a 10m cat6 cable (i need to move my router a bit) longer cable will affect my latency on online gaming or my internet in general?thanx in advance.
Best Outro Ever :P
Its a great video. Thanks
Can you pls answer this very basic and stupid type question.
What if my router is gigabit which has 4 ethernet ports and 4 system connected in a single room all have gigabit lan. and if all the 4 system are sharing and accessing data at the same time what is the speed they are supposed to get
1gbps/ system
OR
1/4gbps/system
Thanks
Manish
Manish Kumar The router will operate at 1Gb max. This means of only 1 system is "talking" at that moment you will get your full 1Gb out of the router (with very minor variances) If 2 or more are talking, it gets a little hard to answer. The reason for this is some (most modern) routers have ways of prioritizing data. In a perfect world, yes you would just devid ports by max throughput, however, this is not normally the case. What you can note though is if you add up all of the speed from all of the connected devices it will equal "about" your router/switch's max throughput. Hope this answered your question.
It can even be more complicated than that. Sometimes router settings set up max throughputs based on the number of connected devices. Depending on how many wireless and wired devices are connected.
Some wireless routers have a max throughput cap for wireless if this many devices are connected wired, and if this many wireless devices are connected then the max speed on the wired might also be capped.
Some are very good at handling this prioritizing, some are...not so good.
Great video! Small correction: If you live on the planet Earth you have quite likely never seen an ethernet cable nor heard or read the word ethernet.
