  • How To Make a Countertop Template demonstrates a fast, simple method to efficiently transfer measurements from the jobsite into your workshop. You will only need some door skin strips, a cutter, hot glue gun and sharpie.
    This method is preferred due to the rigidity of the template. Flexible or cardboard templates do not hold their shape and will deform.

    Just used your video to make a template for our new kitchen cabinets. To be honest, I had my doubts but it worked like a charm. On to constructing the countertop tomorrow. Thanks for the video.

    I've watched a bunch of these videos for templating a small countertop and this is by far the best! The hints about stapling down, measuring edge to edge for the overhang, and especially cutting the strips smaller to fit the contours of walls which are not flat were awesome and missing from other videos. Great job! Liked and subscribed.

    Very professionally done. Thanks for sharing. I do basically the same thing with 12” wide strips of cardboard, cutting into shorter pieces as necessary and gluing on top of each other as I go down the line. I can follow the line of the wall perfectly. Occasionally set a screw to hold it all in place. It allows us to get some use out of the cardboard slip sheets that come with every unit of material. Not a greenie, but if we can get more mileage from all materials, why not?

    • @AndyGraves
      @AndyGraves  2 года назад

      That's a great idea using the cardboard. We have used it before but we cut it too narrow and wouldn't hold it's shape very well. I like the idea of cutting it wider.

    Great video. Any recommendations on doing the template with a farm sink ???? Much appreciated

    • @AndyGraves
      @AndyGraves  2 года назад

      Thanks, you need to install the farm sink per the instructions that came with the sink. Then you will template around the sink making the exact shape you want. There are a lot of different farm sinks so do a little research to determine which type you want. They will also need to be install correctly within the cabinet.

    Hi Andy, your videos are great! Very informative and easy to understand. I recently got into fabricating solid surface as I do a lot of restaurant work. I have a small cabinet shop on east coast. Any chance you can do a video showing how you transfer the template into a top and how you handle the undulations of the scribes? Thanks so much!

    • @AndyGraves
      @AndyGraves  3 года назад +1

      Hello, I don't have plans to make a video like that any time soon. But, when you place the template on the material, you will just trace the line. Then follow close to the line with a Skil saw and nice blade. After cutting, use a belt sander and barely sand the line off using 80 grit sandpaper.

    Andy, Great video. What is your opinion on not templating and fabricating directly from design? Knowing we will have a small percentage of jobs come up with potential problems? Looking to increase efficiency and turn time for projects without sacrificing quality. I know its a big ask, but wondering what you think or have experienced.

    • @AndyGraves
      @AndyGraves  2 года назад

      Thanks. The issue u have is that if it's not correct, YOU, will pay for the changes. Even if the top is one inch to short, it's on you to fix it for free. It doesn't seem to save me any time.

    • @AndyGraves

      I place sticks diagonal to keep the template from shifting. Also, before removing the template from the cabinets, measure from outside corner to outside corner. That way you can check the template as you fabricate.

      Yes, you can template directly over the existing countertop.

    • @mikenelson3338
      @mikenelson3338 3 года назад

      Yes, and it’s even easier... in fact, I just visited a jobsite today where I need to make new countertops, as the commercial space is changing hands. Turns out the tops I’m replacing are tops that I manufactured and installed several years ago 😆 Anyway, templating is easier on top of existing countertops.

    Hi Andy, The 1/8th thick wood you use -- it is a sheet of plywood? Or what is it, before you cut it down to the strips? I don't have a table saw, so woud like to find something that is already existing as strips. Thanks for any thoughts. Great video!

      I did my alcove vanity with 1/4 ply ripped to 3" (used drywall screws to fasten to the cabinets). Worked great. Lattice may not be wide enough when doing the overhang for the front. 3" seemed to be the magical width.
