The screws probably cost more than putting in a new stud - not to mention the labour.
That is true, but we had the screws left over from other projects. We planned on doubling every other stud regardless. Good point

How does this straighten anything?
When I first did this, I thought the same thing. I remember watching the saw joint when I installed the first screw, and I didn't see much closure on the gap, but I saw some. It worked, and it worked well. I have been using it ever since.
