How RJ Scaringe Is Driving Rivian Straight At Elon Musk

- With sales of costlier electric cars cooling, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe is going to woo consumers with a smaller SUV and a smaller $45,000 price tag.
A storm is brewing on a chilly, gray winter day in Palo Alto, California. Still, RJ Scaringe is in a great mood as he power walks through Rivian’s leafy Silicon Valley campus, with one “let me show you this - it’ll just take 30 seconds” after another.
The 41-year-old CEO and founder of the most-promising of the baby Teslas (including Lucid, Fisker and Nikola) established the company in 2009 soon after getting a Ph.D. in engineering from MIT. Rivian had a rocky start when it launched production in late 2021, a historically tough time to start an auto company. Elon Musk predicted in 2022 that Rivian (and Lucid) would go bankrupt. It didn’t.

I saw a Rivian pick up truck yesterday at Costco. Nice looking truck. Problem for me is if you bought a new Rivian today will the company still be around five years from now. Rivian is is over $8 billion in debt. And they’re losing money on each vehicle they sell. Tesla on the other hand is $10 billion positive and they’re making profits on every vehicle they sell. Tesla will definitely be around five years from now. In fact, they will be far stronger than they are now. Rivian may be bankrupt. Nice product, but I’m concerned about their future. I hope they’re able to turn it around.

I certainly could be wrong on this. Looking at a financial statement on Rivian it showed 4.76 billion in debt. Additionally about $3 billion in convertible notes that rounds off to about 8 billion. I certainly could have miss read the financial statement. Rivian has a beautiful product, and I hope they succeed.
If the convertible note dept is part of the 4 billion plus debt then you are right. These financial statements are some times difficult to discern. I’m curious is the convertible note debt part of the 4.76 debt listed or not? Please inform.

I think the ev market is very saturated than lack of chioices. Most folks who want one already have one. Unless EVs come down to 25/30k range, i dont see a massive switch. Range anxiety still exists, and the charging network is still unreliable. Looking at Rivians books, they are burning cash fast. They may not be around for their new model in 2026.
I can't believe how talented this person is, it's truly mesmerizing to watch them in action.
If RJ can get pick up < $80K would see mire demand if Quality for IRA EV Credit..
I think I would really like a Rivian and I was seriously debading ordering one back in 2021 when they set the price at $60K ($50K after tax incentives). Now, you really need to spend at least $75K as the entry level Rivian. That is not a volume product. So I'm looking forward to an R2T in a couple years. I am an EV convert. I live my Nissan Leaf and that is just a basic econo-box EV. Yeah range isn't amazing, but I save $150/month not buying gas and the acceleration is very impressive for an economy car. Good luck to Rivian. I hope they don't go under.
Well, good imagination can create even donkeys that can fly. My compliments! But evidence clearly proves that as soon as the Tesla high Tech unmatched Cyber Truck started production the orders for the Rivian truck simply nose dived. As the late 3 models masterfully presented, it will be a good 3 years before we are going to see at least one in production. But Rivian real problem is the fact that are burning cash so fast, that I wish them to raise some more to help them build the 3 models that have presented much faster than planned, if they will do that probably they are going to make it.

Toyota went with hybrid vehicles instead of electric and it paid them big.
Hybrids are just delaying the inevitable. A iceberg is right in front of gas OEMs and hybrids are not EVs. Tesla and the Chinese will kill off Toyota, Honda, GM, Ford, etc.

Totally wrong heading, both Rivian and CT are eating ICE pick up truck market, not competing against each other. Wait for couple of years to see positive effect of EV trucks
They just trimmed a bunch of fat and are steamlining the factory in April, not to mention breaking ground on a new plant in Georgia...i wouldn't start shoveling the dirt in the hole yet!

we know that, they are sold for $43000 less than what it costs to build them.
Rivian is basically copy Tesla so that they can survive not driving Rivian straight to Tesla 😂. What this report dont tell you is each Rivian being sold today is being sold for a lost of $44k per car 😭🫣🤪🤔 so YES Rivian will go back in six quarters.
