And the triple lock won't be be much if it takes the state pension into the tax bracket as any rise in pension will be taken in tax. Still, I guess we can be happy that our taxes will help keep the thousands of illegal gimmegrants warm and fed and make sure the unions can insist on big fat wage rises for their members. Every year there are pensioners, and indeed other poorer people, who die off in winter due to cold, damp little food etc. Clearly those numbers aren't high enough for those in power so they have to ensure some more freeze to death. As for getting a part time job to help make ends meet, good luck with finding one. Younger, more able people are struggling to find work.

This shows their true colours. Pick on the most vulnerable, the easy targets. In my cohort, many will warm their homes to about 14*c or 57*f to save getting very cold. A living room will be closed off with draught excluders around doors and sit and watch tv or read a book with a couple of blankets over them. They’ll wrap up and go out for walks to warm up and get into bed by about 8 pm and will feel grateful in the morning if the sun is shining into a room. You know, it is far better than living rough out on the street. Kier, if you think I am lying or exaggerating, I can arrange for you to stay with a friend during November. As the BoE said, the so called 'black hole' in the public finances was mainly there because Labour gave huge pay rises to favoured groups in the public sector.
Next will come means testing of the State Pension, and extra taxation of private pension savings, as more & more public sector workers get above inflation rises without any increase in productivity. But no-one can claim to be surprised, as 2TK said he'd tax savers and not workers.

    • @michaeld5888

Of course funding the state sector's index linked pensions for a comfortable retirement is paramount, as old age seems to not be a sin and a burden to the community if you have worked for the state. If anything the state seems to have evolved in to a private members' club working for its own good as opposed to being a service to the public.

Now, times that by hundreds of thousand of people doing it and you can see where the money is going. Hi Al,
Love your work mate and have always wanted to say so. This video hit me hard because I pay my mothers winter bills even though I have my own home elsewhere. She lives alone since she lost her husband last year. She is 82yrs of age and has been rejected for pension credit, which I immediately applied for as I look after her home and her finances during the expensive winter periods. Last Christmas was incredibly difficult on me as I am paying for my own place too. I hate to think what her bills will be this year without that fuel payment to absorb some of the 'gut punch'.
Telling my mother yet again that she needs to close all the living room doors and wrap up like the Michellin tyre man is something I am not looking forwards to.

I am not rich , far from it, I live in Scotland and so far we have had a bad summer and cold and wet most days, right now my house is cold and I need to put my heating on but I can't. I have a basic pension, a small NHS pension and a small part of my husband's private pension. My regret now is that I worked. So do I thank Mr Starmer, guess you know the answer to that already..

Purely from the `psychological` point of view Labours big mistake was that they targeted the pensioners FIRST, instead of looking at other aspects of saving, then much later looking at the Winter Fuel Allowance. This gives the impression of not caring for the elderly. However we look at this there is a `grey band` of pensioners, just above the cut off point, who are not millionaires or very rich and will suffer this winter time. It would also help to keep the public `on side` if the politicians themselves were to `take a hit` financially. After all Labour was elected on the word `Change`. It would be wonderful if Labour showed up those `money grabbing Tories` by taking a salary cut and refusing some of the perks of Parliament. Now that would be `change`.

they should be less strict with the cut off point, be better if they just gave the difference, if you are 50p or £50 over then surely they could just deduct that and give the difference, at least it is almost fair. the problem was they were giving it to everyone, i know a few well off pensioners that did not want it or need and felt insulted that they were forced to have it, and there was no way for them to say no or give it back.

The winter fuel payment was introduced by Labour in 1997, so it's relatively a new thing. It was poorly designed with too many people receiving it that didn't need it. I agree removing it with a crude test of pension credit alone is hard on those just above the threshold, but it should not matter to most pensioners. Certainly not those I know and it should not affect anyone that can afford to run a couple of scooters. Hopefully the chancellor will address the threshold issue at the budget, when she will no doubt hit every single sector of the economy and population to fill the enormous gap. There is a big difference between keeping up a traditional custom by making an inside joke stating "There is no money left" and concealing a 22 billion black hole deficit. The winter fuel allowance had been introduced by a previous Labour HMG as a temporary measure to support poor pensioners. Fortunately, pensioners are better off than previously, and the few exceptions have benefit-tested subsidies.

I worked in the voluntary sector most of my career and didn't earn a lot, but loved my job. I have a very small private pension. I am not entitled to pension credit because I have about 30p too much every week. I always depended on my winter fuel payment as it is so much colder here. I would love to live abroad anywhere i Europe but can't afford to. WE need to get rid on the monarchy and the house of lords and then, maybe there will be more money to spread around. Charles just got an extra 46 million. HoL has over 600 people allowed £300 a day just for turning up. Why do we allow it? Democracy at its worst

Mr Justkinaford is half the country. What’s the point of being careful for retirement. Just go on benefits, pee it up against the wall, have annual holidays, why bother!
