I think, more to the point is, that so many of the lost grand old houses ended up like this one: abandoned and in great disrepair. And expensive to maintain when they are in excellent repair. They are things of beauty for sure, and I wish someone (or I, when the Lotto gods smile on me) could save them all!

I looked up information about the Hegeler Carus families. Mary's father built this mansion. He and his friend were into zinc mining & other minerals. Mary was the first woman to graduate from an Illinois college with an engineering degree. She worked alongside her father in the business and eventually ran it. Her husband was a writer and editor of religious articles and publications. He was a pioneer in introducing interfaith communication. It is well worth reading information about these two families. There's a lot more to both of these families than the above synopsis. 😊

The family had to be very rich &/or the father had a very well-paying job. It doesn't look like any expense was spared when building it.😊❤
This is a beautiful house, made even more so knowing that generations of one family called it home. This is from when houses had character and originality. I watch YT videos showing multi-million dollar homes for sale throughout the country, and the architecture seems more like that of a business office building or a huge warehouse. They feel cold and are show-offish, and not something I would imagine generations wanting to live in. I hope the members of the family that grew up in the house in this video had happy lives.

Thanks for the upload, was a pleasure to see the b4 and after too.
Interesting how the electrical upgrade service was installed. Romex cable kind of strewn all over the place. Orrigonaly had central gas lighting. Too bad they didn't pull wire through the pipe.
Very imposing exterior/interior-almost looks overbuilt or extra fortified-evoking a permanence that it would be admired and prevail for centuries! The kind of craftsmenship found here is irreplaceable and is to be marvelled at! Truly a Masterpiece and a showcase of how Homes were built to last forever! If it isn't on a listing of Homes of Historical Signifigance it should be!Breathtakingly Beautiful!

Boldt Castle, on an island in the Thousand Islands of NY, was left to decay and ruin for 73 years after George Boldt's wife passed away during its construction. He was building it for her as a fairy tale castle, and he abandoned the project after her death. The Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property in 1977 and began to finish the construction and restore the entire complex according to Geo. Boldt's original plans. It is absolutely stunning and well worth a visit.

The city should turn it into a bed and breakfast! I love old places ♥️
The 1874 Second Empire Mansion is now a museum now. Thank you for watching.
I am FASCINATED by older homes and estates like this. Grew up in New England where they are plentiful. This is beautiful! Where in the Midwest is it located? I love the music, the photos and the presentation. BEAUTIFUL. Im a new fan. Subscribing to your channel. Thank you for this!
Isn't it just amazing how they didn't have electricity but yet made a pretty place for a light

Wow! 150 years old this year. Above that carriage house would be a very cool place to live :)

Yes exquisitely beautiful but Extremely somber, gloomy and haunting. It gives one feelings of trepidation. This home is the perfect setting for the Classic American Ghost Story. It has a chilling atmosphere. I would hate to be trapped there overnight.

I would move in today! Stunning

Back when homes were made with true craftsman who appreciate and took pride in their accomplishments and work. Tis the reason why most are still in great functional order. These days, you don't know who or what is building your home...
nice piano...

Image the treasures that are in the glorious mansion. As an avid reader, I could get lost in all those books, for hours. Absolutely breathtaking.

It hurts my heart to see fine old homes fall in such state as this, it’s a shame!

What an amazing place! It's absolutely stunning and breathtaking to see all the talent that went into all the intricate detailing like literally everywhere! How in God's name did they manage to get that masterpiece built in just 2 yrs? Must have had 100s of craftsman and artisans working around the clock for those 2 yrs. Thanks for the upload, was a pleasure to see the b4 and after too.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for watching and for your comments.
Interesting how the electrical upgrade service was installed. Romex cable kind of strewn all over the place. Orrigonaly had central gas lighting. Too bad they didn't pull wire through the pipe.
Wow all those wooden railings and staircases. Imagine how many days it would take to paint it! It is beautiful tho.

I hate when these houses sit empty and get rundown. They don’t make homes like this anymore. People there should restore it and make it livable again.

I hope the roof is fully solid so no rain can damage the inside. Beautiful building.

What a gorgeous house. I wish I had a house like that. The only sad thing about this house is that it doesn’t look like it has been renovated. I sure would’ve like to have seen in it’s renovated splendor.
