I think, more to the point is, that so many of the lost grand old houses ended up like this one: abandoned and in great disrepair. And expensive to maintain when they are in excellent repair.
They are things of beauty for sure, and I wish someone (or I, when the Lotto gods smile on me) could save them all!

Zinc made a lot of people wealthy. My great grandparents found zinc on their farm and it afforded them a better life, they built a new outhouse with a regular door on it.

I looked up information about the Hegeler Carus families. Mary's father built this mansion. He and his friend were into zinc mining & other minerals. Mary was the first woman to graduate from an Illinois college with an engineering degree. She worked alongside her father in the business and eventually ran it.
Her husband was a writer and editor of religious articles and publications. He was a pioneer in introducing interfaith communication.
It is well worth reading information about these two families. There's a lot more to both of these families than the above synopsis. 😊

@@LJones-n8c Thanks for the information. I manly watch Old Movies from the 1930’s-1950’s. People, Cars, Buildings including the ones constructed in the 1700th Hundred’s, and early 20th Century including Old vintage clocks, Radios, Lionel, American Flyer, Ives Trains. Old Coke Cola Machines from the 1940’s-1950’s are all an interest to me. I have I think 16 old Coke Cola machines dating back to the 1940’s- early 1950’s. And more Old Radios from the 1940’s, and 100’s of O Gauge, and Standard Gauge Trains. I have been collecting old cars, radios, lights signs and more for over 30 years. I just appreciate history, and antique, or vintage every thing. It brings to me personally a time that I in many ways wish that I could have lived in. It just transports me to a happier time that I so much have always appreciated.

DuPont Circle is stunning historical structure after stunning historical structure turned into dive bars with faulty sewage mixed in with a few maintained ones. However, so many have been reduced to cement floors, open ductwork, and an interior as cold as the clientele. I did not grow up wealthy nor find my way to wealth, but I appreciate it. So in addition to the absolutely magnificent architecture and interiors, especially those marquetry floors, intricately.stenciled ceilings, and original light fixtures, this house gives us a rare glimpse into original rooms and artifacts rarely seen in any historic property of that era. This Home absolutely should be preserved. I am so thankful it was saved and it is a museum. We all should support this museum. Thank you for sharing this with us. Does this gorgeous home/museum belong to the state now? Maintenance needs to be kept up to preserve this part of history. I wish you had provided more information about the family. The family had to be very rich &/or the father had a very well-paying job. It doesn't look like any expense was spared when building it.😊❤

This is a beautiful house, made even more so knowing that generations of one family called it home. This is from when houses had character and originality. I watch YT videos showing multi-million dollar homes for sale throughout the country, and the architecture seems more like that of a business office building or a huge warehouse. They feel cold and are show-offish, and not something I would imagine generations wanting to live in. I hope the members of the family that grew up in the house in this video had happy lives.

Boldt Castle, on an island in the Thousand Islands of NY, was left to decay and ruin for 73 years after George Boldt's wife passed away during its construction. He was building it for her as a fairy tale castle, and he abandoned the project after her death. The Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property in 1977 and began to finish the construction and restore the entire complex according to Geo. Boldt's original plans. It is absolutely stunning and well worth a visit.
