Exactly. Talk is he wanted more money than McKinnon makes and the Avs, who still have to pay Cale at some point, rightly thought about it and said no, that's not right, let's get some value for him while we still can. Simple as. Someone will give Rantanen a lot of money in FA, and he deserves it. But he was no longer a fit on the Avs.

"you're never going to win a trade for a star player". Dude . . . DUCHENE!?! Anyway, what's interesting is that Mikko was caught extremely off guard by the trade because supposedly he had no idea the 2 sides were so far apart in trade negotiations. Mikko probably told his agent what kind of money he would like, and Mikko's agent assured he would get the deal done just like he did for Draisaitl who he also represented. Everyone assumed a deal would get done since there was plenty of time left to negotiate, and would go down to the final hour if needed(as was the case with Landeskog's contract). However, they underestimated Colorado's front office and how the organization was in no mood to deal with bluffing games. The funny thing now is that if things work out with Necas and he looks amazing alongside Nate, then he's going to start thinking he's worth 13mill too lol. On a side note, it's great to see a Drury on an Avs Jersey again, especially after all his uncle Chris did for the team in the late 90s to early 2000s.

I'm with CMac and Joe saying no to 14mil per year for Mikko. And I'm sure they know that it doesn't matter how expensive, Cale Makar deserves just about anything and everything. If this team wants to compete for a Cup, they can't have that much salary tied up in 3 players.

There are players, whose mere presence makes the other players play better for the team, point wise and all. If you lose a key player and the team's performance suffers, everyone needs to prepare for a pay cut and try to get money for they value before that value is gone.
Is he worth 14+ million? I would say yes, on the team that doesn´t have any generational talent, but Avs already have 2. My guess is that they went for more depth rather than end up like the Leafs.

For me the baffling part of this trade isn't the Avs part. Yeah it sucks to lose a great player, but he was asking for more money than McKinnon makes, and they still have to pay Cale at some point. That's just not reasonable, even though Mikko is a star. To get something of value for him now before he walks in FA and you get nothing is smart by McFarland, Sakic, et al. The baffling part for me is the Blackhawks part. I mean I get it, Hall has a big contract and was under-performing, but they do realise that they at some point need to surround Bedard with something that at least resembles NHL-calibre talent, right? Right?!
This wouldn't have been an issue if it wasn't for Draisaitl. It stinks for the Aves and the fans but this is probably the best case scenario given the circumstances. I still can't wrap my head around Chicago's involvement in it though.
Wild. I get that losing Ranta for nothing would suck in off season if a deal can’t be reached but he is a big time player who even gets better in the playoffs. As a Jets fan I’m happy from that perspective but as Avs have a soft spot for me that move is puzzling.
I don't think they're all in enough on this team this year to lose Mikko for nothing just to have him for one playoff run. You're by no means guaranteed to have Landeskog back, and even if he does play how will he look after basically missing three seasons? And you're not guaranteed anything more than a wildcard spot with where they are in the standings looking up at the Jets, Stars, and Wild.
I feel like it's pretty straightforward tbh. Rantanen wanted more money than Colorado could afford, ESPECIALLY with Makar needing a new contract soon, and the Avs' depth has been struggling horrendously ever since their 2022 cup run. They haven't found a satisfying answer at 2C without Kadri, and for as good as Rantanen is, he's no center. If it comes down to it, which it seems like it did, I would rather have the cap space for Makar than Rantanen. Does this trade make them better in the moment? No, absolutely not. Necas is a solid piece but let's be real, Colorado loses this trade every time in terms of the talent going each way. But there's more to it than that, and losing Rantanen for nothing in July is a far worse outcome than what they chose here. The real question is going to be what they do with their cap space next season, because they HAVE to shore up their depth. And if their plan is seriously to hope that Landeskog is even a shell of what he once was, that's not a very good plan IMO.
IMO the trade shifts the conversation about Carolina. Now they absolutely must at very least make it to game 5 of the ECF, something they haven't done since 2006. If they fall short of that, as well as being unable to sign Rantanen after the season the entire organization might as well pack up and go back to Hartford. This is a HUGE move, a flop what you got on the table and scream from the mountaintop "WE ARE SERIOUSLY DONE PLAYING GAMES" type of move. I'd put it a tier below the Tkachuk trade. Anything short of winning should be seen as an abject failure by all involved.
This one hurts. I understand the numbers...but it's still sad to bid adieu to the Moose. Getting a Chris Drury legacy pledge helps the sting a little. Don't know much about Necas.
The new report comes out that he "would have budged on his asking price" while quoting his current 9.5 million. Like, the Canadian hockey market wants to make Colorado sound heartless, but jumping from 9.5 to 13 million (which was the reported LOW mark) is still a 3.5 million jump when guy's like Makar and Landeskog are just better value. Oh, and here's a breakdown.. Games without a point: Necas, Makar (both more defensive players) 17 games. 11 lost games for Necas, 10 for Makar. Rantanen 14 games, 12 games lost. MacKinnon 11 games, 8 games lost (which is RIDICULOUS). Games with a negative plus / minus (not the leading stat, but still pretty important): Rantanen, 17 games. Makar and MacKinnon, 16 games. Necas, 15 games.
What comes to Landeskog, a couple of facts we have are 1) He's not back yet. 2) No-one actually knows when or even if he is going to return. 3) No-one actually knows how well his ankle stays intact. Forever good? Might be. Injured and can never walk against after the next shift? Might be. 4) No-one knows how the break of closer to three years has affected to his playing. Instant All-Star like Forsberg used to be when return from a break of an eternity? Might be. Not an NHL-tier player anymore? Might be.
I love Drury and getting 2nd and 4th is always excellent but giving up Rantanen for Nacas is awful. For me, you can't really sugar cote it. Canes got the no.2 winger in the league behind Kaprizov.
It was the smart move to make , you get 2 younger cost controlled pieces or you either , 1. Let him walk for nothing at the end of the season or 2. Pay him 14 million a season for 8 seasons and a 32-36 year old player making 14 million a season is not good at all , plus you now set the bar for makar and makar is better then mikko and should get paid more .
People try understand its also a Move where Mikko cant simply agree low payment, its gonna backfire to next star player contract deal. Draisatl made the cap to reach and Avs didnt pay
I partially support the Av’s on this one. I’m in favor of never running a team in the “win now and sacrifice all futures” mindset, because there’s a very real world where the Av’s keep Rantanen, get swept in the 1st round and lose him in the offseason for nothing. At least in this situation you still end up with a 26 year old player that has the ability to be a 100+ point producer, and there’s a better chance of resigning him for a smaller number too. Obviously we won’t know the true value of this trade until a few years from now, but so far it looks pretty good on both sides to me
Well they should have swallowed their pride and paid up. They are a way worse team now. Their wasting a lot of cap space on average players like Colton and Girard that could have been used on this extension.
Makar is going to get paid more then nate. The cap is going up so it really dosent make sense. Just pay him the extra 2mil he wants. He is a top 10 player in the league. It's an easy trade middlestad to free up that cap space to pay miko. Not to mention the cap is prob going up to let's say 95mil next year and will contuie to hike up so if anything getting these inflated contracts are better now then later when a 2nd liner will be getting paid 8mil hence why laffy and Gunther got their 7mil eventhoufh their more or less 2nd line caliber players. So with this in mind... That's at least a 5mil jackup....that's excattly what miko wants and that means they be at cap limit even without moving middlestad. So not able to afford him, I'm not really buying it... the only way to justify this trade would be the avs grabbing a Miller or even a Bennet....this still means Casey would have to he moved so I guess we will get answers next offseason because teams do tend to make these moves for knowing how the team will be built in the future. This is very similar to the gunetzel deal by getting a roster player back but Jake guentzel is not in the HoF category IMO. It also isn't similar to the thachuxk trade because Matty wanted out and I believe he was an rfa. Huberdeu Also got paid 2.5mil more then Matty regardless it's a flordia team and cgy also got a #1/2 defesemen in weager. The only logical explanation here is that colordo has more up their sleves. As for carolina they really nailed this trade and getting hall for just a 3rd is a home run.
@@maxratesThey don’t have the money. It’s not a matter of pride. Anyone paying attention in Denver knew weeks ago this was going to happen. Rantanen wasn’t going to resign…period. The only thing in question was this going to happen closer to the deadline or not.
@@maxrates they are actually a better team. Necas is right behind rantanen in points and look who necas played with compared to rantanen plus he had way less minutes plus they have more cap space now lmao
Or at least Drury combined with Necas will.. The Avalanche didn't really lose on this trade at all imo. Mikko has visible flaws to his game and questionable effort level at times
Definitely were cup contender since getting blackwood... The league was getting scared, we just went on a huge winning streak. Terrible loss, unacceptable. With nichushkin coming back, the PP starts clicking, we get rebound goals. Avs were a wagon and had a cup shot his year.
The avs have been brutal on the powerplay. Mikko was part of the issue.. They wanted to shake things up while they sitll had some leverage on a mikko deal and I think it was the right move. The 2 players they got are undervalued in terms of the money they are making and they have Necas at 6.5 next year too. It was a good trade even if they end up being a bust... People who say CMac is dumb for this trade are dumb themselves
To avoid becoming the Oilers or Leafs.. too much $$$ tied up by too few players. Cap world. Going to be interesting to compare the different approaches.
Dumb trade straight up. Even if they get Crosby in, it's not worth sacrficing Moose's prime years. Never thought as a life long Nordiques fan I would question Burnaby Joe, but here we are.
Nobody cares if Mikko makes more than Mack, especially Mack. Its the overall amount, it would have tied up too much, limiting other adds to fill out the team.
In my opinion - and this coming from a Finn - Rantanen is not as good as Draisaitl. If you want to talk about regular season, fine. Where's the Hart Trophy? If you want to talk about playoffs, where's the 30-point seasons? And if 30 points - which Draisaitl has twice - is too much asked, how about eight goals?
You can also say things about Leon, like: where's the championship ring? how many playoff games has he won against Rantanen? How many times has he been swept in the playoffs? If you want to say Draisaitls is the better overall player that's fine, but using only arguments that are based on points is kind of mute. In reality they are probably really close offensively, however one of them plays in a system that is designed to make everything go through its 2 star players while another plays on a team whose objective is to get everyone involved.
@@ranchosdelnorte Championships are always a team effort and thus you really can't judge individual players based on that. Especially when essentially you are talking about exactly one goal (15.11 of the second period on June 24th). "designed to make everything go through its 2 star players" Yeah, I agree, MacKinnon-Rantanen playing times have been way too high and that's something Avalanche wanted to also address by this trade. Or do you mean that Carolina is now playing too much of... Rantanen and... Aho?
5:18 you are a short sighted cookie cutter and I'm glad 60+% of you peons think like this. So other people and teams win trades easy. Now go look up teams that wins trades.
Canes have paid players. They paid their stars and extended all of them. They got the #1 free agent in summer 2023 with Orlov and landed the #1 trade deadline piece last year with Guentzel. Now they got Rantanen and have 35-40M in cap space to pay him and others moving forward. They are always at the cap as well so again “they don’t pay for stars” is BS. Tkachuk was nearly here, Eichel was nearly here, it’s not for lack of trying. Things are starting to fall in place and it’s gonna be hilarious watching people finally realize Carolina has built a behemoth of a team.
Carolina has been that behemoth for years, was the favourite to win the Cup ahead of the playoffs last year, will likely be again this year, and has the sun belt tax advantage that allows them to do a lot of moves other teams simply can’t. They are not some underdog Cinderella story that people would be shocked to see succeed or particularly interesting from any narrative perspective beyond for whatever reason repeatedly getting swept in the semis which I don’t know how they keep accomplishing when they have everything going for them.

Games without a point:
Necas, Makar (both more defensive players) 17 games. 11 lost games for Necas, 10 for Makar. Rantanen 14 games, 12 games lost. MacKinnon 11 games, 8 games lost (which is RIDICULOUS).
Games with a negative plus / minus (not the leading stat, but still pretty important):
Rantanen, 17 games. Makar and MacKinnon, 16 games. Necas, 15 games.
Bro your hair looks like how i feel rn 😅😢
I've known this video was coming all day. lol
What comes to Landeskog, a couple of facts we have are
1) He's not back yet.
Makar is the future for the upcoming gen for the team and will bridge the gap when he gets older
Nichushkin was huge mistake. Not having Grubaer and Kuemper but leaving Val without Raantanen feels like a waste.
What i want to know is, if Colorado had 0 Stanley cups would Luca from Toronto be a fan. Doubt it
Please do also a D3 quiz.
Nah this is literally what we needed rn this is so on brand for u im crying
Saying Necas will never Be on rantanen level is crazy
People try understand its also a Move where Mikko cant simply agree low payment, its gonna backfire to next star player contract deal. Draisatl made the cap to reach and Avs didnt pay
Mikko can't play center, the Avs offered to make him the highest paid winger in the league
Obviously we won’t know the true value of this trade until a few years from now, but so far it looks pretty good on both sides to me
Canes either need to win the cup this year or extend Rantanen to make it even somewhat worth it
How did the Avs not get Seth Jarvis in return that is mind boggling
Carolina probably wouldn’t consider it, knowing that the Av’s pretty much had to move Rantanen Carolina had more leverage to not give up both
It was less than half a season of Mikko that they got back
9.5 million is too rich for their limited cap space pockets
Msrty isnt going to be cheap either. Great young player
It's sad but needed to be done.
Luca, he wanted 14+ Mill. Avs didnt want to pay him more than Mackinnon. Not difficult
@@maxrates right, but they can’t use it for the extension, which is why they got rid of the guy who wanted 5 guys worth of salart
Go canes! Treat Necas well!
Carolina Canes 😮
They got a good one here
WE will see. I think Necas will make more points in the rest of the season than Rantanen will in Carolina.
8X14?
Sakic getting ready for the Pens fire sale.
That ps5 is huge
To avoid becoming the Oilers or Leafs.. too much $$$ tied up by too few players. Cap world.
Going to be interesting to compare the different approaches.
Dumb trade straight up. Even if they get Crosby in, it's not worth sacrficing Moose's prime years. Never thought as a life long Nordiques fan I would question Burnaby Joe, but here we are.
They have another big trade coming trust me
Nobody cares if Mikko makes more than Mack, especially Mack. Its the overall amount, it would have tied up too much, limiting other adds to fill out the team.
69k subs, nice
ACTUALLY ABOUT TO CRASH OUT. I love both Chicago and the Avs and I have to say, without a doubt, Carolina won this trade and I’m so maddddddd
Why do people like bardown? I just don't get it.
Because they can't spend 12+ million for three players. MacKinnon, Makar, Rantanen.
It was all about money. Sad, but true.
"designed to make everything go through its 2 star players"
Yeah, I agree, MacKinnon-Rantanen playing times have been way too high and that's something Avalanche wanted to also address by this trade. Or do you mean that Carolina is now playing too much of... Rantanen and... Aho?
5:18 you are a short sighted cookie cutter and I'm glad 60+% of you peons think like this. So other people and teams win trades easy. Now go look up teams that wins trades.
simple avs couldn't agree to a new deal so they traded him instead of losing him to UFA for nothing.
trade me go Ranon in, according to the captioning
Avs general management knows what they're doing. Excited for the coming months.
under 5 minutes... crazy
Buddy better do good and not make me regret getting rid of Jack and marty
(Initial reaction) I came upstairs and told my wife there had been a death in the family…..
If Rantanen wants more than MacKinnons 12.6 mil his loss
Trade for Sid
Goodbye Avs Cup window. 😂
3 headed monster was too much
The AVS will regret it.
I doubt it. there is thing called a salary cap.. A team paying 3 superstar players big contracts doesn't work in the nhl
It’s called money
Luca dont know puck
canes also have 30-40 mil in cap space at the end of this season so hopefully he resigns
Couldnt afford him. Easy. Trade him for something. Or get nothing when he becomes a free agent
Go canes!!!!!!
