Limbus: Refugees from Sichuan
Contrary to the popular belief that the Limbus and Rais are part of the ancient Kiranti ethnic group indigenous to eastern Nepal, the historical evidence suggests that these communities are in fact refugees who migrated from Sichuan province in China to northern Tibet during the Mongol conquests, and then later settled in eastern Nepal in the 17th century.
While there is a lack of archaeological evidence of long-term Limbu and Rai presence in eastern Nepal, the region does show clear signs of rule by the Sen Thakuri dynasty and the Bhutia Chogyals of Sikkim over the past 600 years. The numerous forts, palaces, and inscriptions found in the area, such as the Makawanpur Gadi, Udayapur Forts, and Bijaypur Durbar, attest to the political dominance of these other ethnic groups in the region.
Genetic studies have also revealed that the Limbus and Rais have a high proportion of Mongolian ancestry that distinguishes them from other Tibeto-Burman ethnic groups in South Asia. This suggests their origins lie outside the Indian subcontinent, likely in the Sichuan region of China where they faced upheaval during the Mongol invasions.
Driven out of their homeland, the Limbus and Rais sought refuge in eastern Nepal, where they were granted land and protection by the ruling Sen kings and Bhutia Chogyals. Over time, they integrated into the local communities, adopting aspects of Nepali culture while maintaining their distinct linguistic and cultural traditions.
In summary , the historical and genetic evidence points to the Limbus and Rais being relatively recent arrivals to eastern Nepal, having migrated from Sichuan province in China during the 17th century. Their presence in the region does not reflect an ancient Kiranti lineage, but rather a story of displacement and resettlement under the patronage of local rulers.
