i think nowadays its quite simple, if you cannot visit them, you cannot work with them. im saying this as a guy that used to work in China for 15 years, doing inspections and solving problems. in China personal relations with the manufacturer are very important, if there is no relationship, there are going to be problems, potentially big problems. especially if you are looking for new suppliers that you have not worked with before. so keep that in mind, doing things locally is less risky, and low in travel cost. you can go visit the plant and discuss and solve problems, that advantage is major, and worth a higher price.
