Great video, Lee! I have to say that I freaked out a bit when I saw you hanging upside down and talking about getting as close as possible to your subject. I thought you were serious, so you got one on me! I enjoyed your comments about observation, taking notes, etc. I would love for you to do a video where you show us how you observe in the field and what things you feel are important to get down in your notes that are instrumental in a successful painting when back in the studio. Your painting turned out beautifully!

Sorry for scaring you. I will admit that now I really do want to find a case where hanging upside down is a useful/necessary sketching position :D
      That's a great video idea.

this is so pretty. I love the pinks in the orchid. I also enjoyed the info about orchids it's both fascinating and weird how they rely on a fungus to survive.

Slipper orchids! And great video, I'm going for short day hike soon and this really inspired me to take my sketchbook with me. I tend to notice bugs, and things they make. I find it so interesting to see spider webs, pollinators at work, ants working together etc. It works great together with gardening. This house did not have garden before we moved, and when I added garden, I noticed it invited so much more life into our yard. And bugs are great source of inspiration for fantasy and scifi illustrations.

Have fun! Bugs are fascinating - I look forward to seeing your fantasy and scifi illustrations
I agree, gardens have a magical way of breathing life into the surroundings, beyond the specific plants you choose. My house also did not have a garden before we moved (somehow this botanical artist bought a house from people who hated all things green - every bit of this property and even the boulevard strip were paved/gravelled/bricked over). It is amazing to me how different the neighbourhood *sounds*, just from the chain reaction I started by carving a few planting areas in my patch of concrete and rocks, and planting a few vegetables for myself and flowers for the pollinators. The plants have multiplied and spread, neighbours have embraced volunteer plants and added their own. Where it used to be silent and dead there are bees, crickets, birds all over here. A few days ago I got really happy when I discovered some blue iridescent damselflies have moved into my front yard!

Wow Lee, you went all in :D Love the intro so much as well as your thoughts on botanical art and your process of foraging for references. The painting is stunning as always! Too bad you didn't find the pitcher plants, maybe you will on your next hike? :)

Glad you liked the intro! My analytics say it wasn't as effective as I had hoped but I am having fun trying to come up with more visually exciting ways of sharing my passions...this won't be the last unconventional video choice I try.
Hopefully someday I will find pitcher plants in the wild. Also maybe I will try planting some native pitcher plants in my garden :)

@@LeeAngold Sometimes the algorithm needs some time to catch on! Your video was awesome. And yes, pitcher plants for the garden, definitely!

Your botanical art definitely is hors catégorie. Waw!
(somehow makes me less sad that I didn't participate :) )
    I really love your approach.

I don't know how to feel about this comment. I am glad you are not feeling bad about missing out on a specific collab, but I would hate to be the reason people feel it is "not worth" making art of their own.
I've been blessed with lots of opportunity to practice and develop my skills over the past several years - you can also achieve great things :)

      Ahaha, perfect!
Sometimes I worry my particular brand of nerdiness can be a little bit dry for video...gotta figure out how to share the excitement I feel about little plant details and watercolour. I've got a few more experimental video ideas to try out :)
