This transmission, like most automatics, seeks and holds it's one to one ratio if possible when under load. 7th gear is the one to one in this transmission. The reason being that it is neither an under or overdrive. Therefore it is the strongest gear. The program management, by design goes to and stays in 7th as long as it can. Keep up your good work! Very good video!

    • @kfelix2934

Question if it one-to-one is the main shaft locked to the output? ( I'm think of how the Borg_Warner works here and applying that logic to automatic ). So if it 1-2-1 direct that engine rpm is what the driver shaft would be spinning at here.

    • @toofastnobrakes

Huh, does that change with different gear rations?

    • @anymanusa

You mean it is stronger than the three overdrive gears. It's just flat wrong to say one to one is stronger than the underdriven gears.

Regarding the exhaust brake, in another video a Ford engineer talks about there being 3 different settings for it (full strength, auto, etc). I think he said you cycle through them by pressing the button repeatedly. Check your owners manual when you get a chance.

Id disagree, I had a 19 F350 SRW that towed a 44ft 5th wheel at roughly 14,000 loaded and I would always use the engine brake on automatic and we go to an area that has 3 very steep hills and on decent of these hills I started out doing fine but about 40-50 yards down I was going about 10+ mph faster and tap the brake again and watch my rpm's go to about 4,000+, I thought it was going to scatter the engine all over the road. This was starting out around 40mph. It got so bad Id take the tow/haul mode off and just keep the engine brake on. Now I have a 22 F450 with 10 speed and hoping this isn't so rough on the truck.

I was a Ram guy also. My oldest son had a 2004 Ram 2500 long box & my youngest son had a 2006 Ram 3500 long box & my brother still has his 2005 Ram 3500 long box. Mind you he has paid for his 2005 TWICE with all the $$$ he has spent on over & under drives, lift kit, bigger wheels & tires, $9k rebuilding the tranny, adding remote starter (TWICE) adding back up camera (ONE) cause none of that stuff came with the 2005s.
I was in 2014 Ram 3500 MegaCab with HO 6.7L Cummins® Turbo Diesel with AISIN AS69RC & it was a beast for pulling. I absolutely loved my MegaCab.
Switched to Ford F350 Limited in 2018 when maintenance costs start kicking in on the Ram. I just got the new 2020 F350 Platinum with new PowerStroke Jan 15.
The difference between the 2020 & the 2018 is astonishing. The 2020 F350 Platinum has way more pick up & go than the 2018 & 2019.
The new third-generation 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel V8 now puts out 475 hp and 1050 lb-ft.. It has a new turbo, new internals and a new 36,000-psi fueling system to deliver power; the outgoing 2019 engine was rated for 450 hp and 935 lb-ft.
Also the 2020 10-speed transmission adds extra driving modes: Slippery, Deep Sand and Snow, and Eco. I have been using Eco mode when I am not towing & I've been getting 12.0 litres/100km (equals 19.6 USA miles per gallon) on tank of diesel.
I love that the mirrors now "Auto Fold" as soon as I lock the truck. The new headlights are also way brighter as I am constantly being flashed for having High Beams on when I am Low Beam.
The massaging front seats are very soothing on long trips or even in the city sitting at all those red lights. IN MY OPINION, Ram still has a way to go to catch up with Ford on the comfort & practical side of things.
On the RAM, I hated having to go outside & swing up mirrors & re-adjust them all when towing & then switch everything back when not towing.

I would compare my 2022, Dodge diesel to that truck. I can't say mine would out do yours but I do care about MPG. Reliability but we both know NOTHING beats the Dodge diesel break.. Your engine seems to struggle sometimes but other times it seems very smooth but your RPM's is excellent. Good review! oh I have the Aisin transmission mated with a 3.73 rear end. I'm told I bought the wrong rear end but hauling a truck camper I thought 3.73 was best. Oh, I average 13.2 MPG hauling a 3600 hundred pound truck camper. When I figured it up, it was actually right around 13.9, which is good but no mountains but not flat. I'm not sure those gauges are right in ANY truck.

I drive a 2018 Ford 3500 single rear wheel with a Power Stroke 6.7 for an RV dealer here in Montana. This is a very interesting video because yesterday March 6, 2020 I delivered a 5th wheel trailer from Missoula to Billings a distance of 352 miles and returned with an Airstream Classic back to Missoula. Total round trip mileage was 700 on the odometer and 704 on Google maps. I start with a full tank and fill up again before returning to the yard. Total fuel used was 65.908 gal for a mileage of 10.62 to 10.68 mpg depending on the mileage of 700 or 704. I travel at 68 but vary between 55 and 72 depending on road conditions. Travel trailers have a lot more windage so I expect lower mpg. I'm not for hire so I don't cross the scales but I estimate the gross weight (truck and trailer) with the 5th wheel at 23,000 lbs and 18,000 lbs. with the Airstream. Both trailers were about 32' long. I crossed the Butte pass (Homestake pass) twice, once each way so the driving conditions are roughly similar to your video. I think the lower mileage I'm getting is due to the increased frontal area. I really like the new 10 speed but I only have a 6 speed auto and I think it does fine.
I'm a RAM guy myself and have a 2011 Dodge 3500 single rear wheel that I use for towing personal stuff but I have to tell you the Dodge R68 transmission is its' biggest drawback. It is constantly shifting up and down. The only good way to go up a pass is to select a gear manually and leave it there. Ford is heads above RAM in regards to the transmission. All shifts in the Ford are silky smooth vs the RAM where it SLAMS into a lower gear and the RPMS jump by 1,000. Sounds like the TCU is trying to break something.
I do think RAM has a better engine (Jake) brake. I would like someone who has a RAM 4500 or 5500 with the Isuzu transmission post a review. I think the Isuzu trans could be a major improvement. A RAM 4500 with that transmission would be a 500k truck.
    Just my 2 cents worth.

Ford will love that you run a 6.7 liter engine over 3 grand to pull hills. Start saving for that overhaul. Second, automatics, as you are starting to learn, aren't the best tool for pulling hills. Manuals are. Everybody bought automatics so that's what you get. A manual transmission will always give you the best performance if you know how to use it. Simple, more gears = more control. A V8 with shorter piston throws will not generally have the stronger engine brake. Just a fact. The Cummins is a 6 Cyl. The Ford is an 8. Cummins for that reason will have the better brake. Fun test. Would like to see you do the test in better road conditions etc.

So I will say this, While the MPG is great, ther eis one major factor with that. You were going West. If you were headed East, you would experience a lesser MPG. The reason for this is the shape of the Rockies. You have much longer gradiants on the West side of the mountain. So you dropped MPG for a shorter time going uphill and then longer downhills that will increase the avg of your MPG. I would be curious to see what your numbers are going East.

You’ve done a great job with the video - GoPro time lapse not a problem.
I think inline engines work better on the exhaust brakes, this may be due to V engines only braking on one cylinder bank. So the Cummins is using all 6.7 litres; whereas the Ford is only using 3.35 litres for compression braking, please correct me if I’m wrong?

When you're in tow/haul it tries to limit shifting around a bunch and will want to stay in a gear longer. With tow/haul on w/ cruise control set, there is a little hit of lag when the truck hits a hill before it shifts. The truck will try to increase the throttle to see if that will be enough to maintain the set speed but if it isn't then it will drop a gear to get the truck back to the speed it's set at.
