One of the most stunning tracks ever. I first heard this through headphones late at night and it frightened me to death. Chilling, frightening, disturbing - but utterly brilliant. Probably my all time fave VDGG track. Such a shame not many people ‘get’ it. Hammill? Genius. Lyrically without equal.
Couldn’t have said it better myself. I also heard this song late at night on headphones while listening to the album. I will never forget the chills I felt. Couple of years later, the tune has not lost its impact. An absolute masterpiece.
Great Composition from one of the Master 's of Our Time ! This surge across the marshy mud landscape .... untill the Meaning is Forgotten !!! Thank You Peter H. and Guy E. for Everything !!! 🇺🇸 ♦️
Qui lo SCREAMING style di PETER HAMMILL (oggi compie 73 anni MITICO !!!!!) È molto ben in evidenza !!!!!! Grande pezzo uno dei più belli dei VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR !!!!!
Like nothing you will hear anywhere in the commercial world. Created with heart, technical love, aesthetic, innovation, surreilism, psychology, purity.
One of Peter's finest vocal performances! Majestic, masterful, powerful and unique like the man himself. I saw VDGG in 2005 the loudest gig I've ever witnessed it was so loud but not in a bang you over the head way my head and ears were buzzing but it was worth it as they were magnificent!
[Verse 1] Stub towers in the distance Riders cross the blasted moor Against the horizon Fickle promises of treaty Fatal harbingers of war, futile orisons Swirl as one in this flight, this mad chase This surge across the marshy mud landscape Until the meaning is forgotten [Refrain 1] Hood masks the eager face, skin stretched and sallow Headlong into the chilling night, as swift as any Arrow [Verse 2] Feet against the flagstones Fingers scrabbling at the lock Craving protection "Sanctuary!", croaks a voice Half-strangled by the shock of its rejection Shot the bolt in the wall, rusted the key; Now the echoes of all frightful memory Intrude in the silence [Refrain 2] What a crawl against the slope - dark loom the gallows One touch to the chapel door, how swiftly comes the Arrow [Break] [Verse 3] "Compassion", you plead As though they kept it in a box, hah! - Well, that's long since been empty I'd like to help you somehow But I'm in the self-same spot: Oh, my condition exempts me We are all on the run, on our knees; The sundial draws a line upon eternity Across every number [Refrain 3] How long the time seems, how dark the shadow Oh, how straight the eagle flies, how straight towards his Arrow How long the night is - why is this passage so narrow? How strange my body feels, impaled upon the Arrow
"How straight the eagle flies, how straight towards his arrow" - brutal lyrics Could well be the most bloody song of the 70's. Awakens the fire in me, this one. Love it to death.
I've always thought of this as the thematic predecessor of their song A Place To Survive from World Record: While the holocaust rages around you, be the eye of the storm; Though the extent of disaster astounds you, forearmed is forewarned.
Godbluff, Still Life and World Record done in merely 2 years, right. No record ressembles the others. Not to forget in the indescriptible Quiet Zone / Pleasure Dome. Not only my youth but my soul.
I'll always be baffled to the fact that Van der Graaf are not more well known. Criminally under-rated or rather un-popular I guess. I've never met someone IRL that was familiar with VDG. Such a shame.
I remember that moment so vividly. I was in bed listening to this fantastic album for the first time, completely submerged in it. As soon as the free jazz intro to the song ends and gives way to that hypnotic, deeply melancholic riff, I was utterly taken aback. The entire track was a journey I will never forget. One of my all time favorite songs.
I'd say it's about fate and the inability to change/improve yourself. How you can never outrun your own limitations. How you are always, against your own will, defined by things ouside of your control. No matter how much you try. There is always a factor of defeat in everything you manage to achieve, which you have to learn to bitterly accept.
I've always just thought of it as a kind of musical fantasy, like a movie about medieval warfare ... or a dissertation on the horrors of war with its dark cruel hopelessness. It's rather Gothic and somewhat Edgar Allen Poe: Shot the bolt in the wall, rusted the key; Now the echoes of all frightful memory Intrude in the silence.
Progressiv!.. lyrisch... sehr aktuell.. Medizin für das Gehirn!!
One of their best, no doubt

Sempre strepitose le loro "costruzioni musicali"!
You know you're in for a treat when the cover of the album is completely black
When I first heard this masterpiece, I almost passed out because of how good it is.
This may be my favorite VDGG track. Sublime vocals, lyrics, and saxophone.
Don't forget the drums, the ride playing throughout the whole track is masterful
One of my most favorite songs ever! Yes ...macabre...brutal...medieval and brilliant.....love it!
Prawdziwa rockowa sztuka.... VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR.... 🎸 🎸 🎸 🎸 🎸 🎸 🎸 🎸 🎸 🎸 🎸 🎸 Godbluff....
Favorite song in the world right now.
Ever.. from Poland;)
probably the best song ever
Van Der Graaf Generator... the source of inspiration very much indeed....
Never a saxophone got so much sonic treatments...
[Verse 1]
Stub towers in the distance
Riders cross the blasted moor
Against the horizon
Fickle promises of treaty
Fatal harbingers of war, futile orisons
Swirl as one in this flight, this mad chase
This surge across the marshy mud landscape
Until the meaning is forgotten
[Refrain 1]
Hood masks the eager face, skin stretched and sallow
Headlong into the chilling night, as swift as any Arrow
[Verse 2]
Feet against the flagstones
Fingers scrabbling at the lock
Craving protection
"Sanctuary!", croaks a voice
Half-strangled by the shock of its rejection
Shot the bolt in the wall, rusted the key;
Now the echoes of all frightful memory
Intrude in the silence
[Refrain 2]
What a crawl against the slope - dark loom the gallows
One touch to the chapel door, how swiftly comes the Arrow
[Break]
[Verse 3]
"Compassion", you plead
As though they kept it in a box, hah! -
Well, that's long since been empty
I'd like to help you somehow
But I'm in the self-same spot:
Oh, my condition exempts me
We are all on the run, on our knees;
The sundial draws a line upon eternity
Across every number
[Refrain 3]
How long the time seems, how dark the shadow
Oh, how straight the eagle flies, how straight towards his Arrow
How long the night is - why is this passage so narrow?
How strange my body feels, impaled upon the Arrow
Love this band!
such a powerful performance
Amazing, undescribable.
Haklısın dostum.

While the holocaust rages around you,
be the eye of the storm;
Though the extent of disaster astounds you,
forearmed is forewarned.
And "impaled upon the arrow"
Seriously, most metal non-metal music! Up the irons? Up THE MOTHERFUCKIN GENERATOR!
....
And the irons, of course.
I always thought of "the arrow" as a symbol for time itself.
Favourite track of VderG... brilliant.🎶❤

Great Composition ! ♦️
My all time fave VDG track.
you're missing a G.
7:15 through 7:35 is just so fucking genius that it looks like cheating
It's like the part that begins at 5:25 but even better.
Compassion You plead ; as though they kept it in a box ... Well that box has long since been empty ! ✓. 😎. Carlito
The first VDGG I ever heard and it hooked me.
me too!

Guy Evans ; Peter Hammil and Van Der Graaf Generator ... get the job done . ✓. 😎.

Agreed
But how Russian poetess Tsvetaeva answered to a critic "You will be forgotten in ten years" - No problem, in 100 years reminded again! )
Pure genius
One of VdGG best!
Amazing!!
Wild but jazzy song. Godbluff is in the 5 of the best VdGG's albums
I'd say it's about the passing of time and the fact you can't stop it.
Like the song "the Boat of a Million Years"
Oh well, for me this is the best !!!
Top one I would say.
imagine hearing this for the first time

I envy those who listen to this for the first time. Still feeling the butterflies in my stomach everytime I press play.

Anyone has a good insight regarding the meaning of this song?
I'd say it's about fate and the inability to change/improve yourself. How you can never outrun your own limitations. How you are always, against your own will, defined by things ouside of your control. No matter how much you try. There is always a factor of defeat in everything you manage to achieve, which you have to learn to bitterly accept.
I'd say it's about a guy being pursued by his enemies... fleeing for his life....see Lord of The Rings
I've always just thought of it as a kind of musical fantasy, like a movie about medieval warfare ... or a dissertation on the horrors of war with its dark cruel hopelessness. It's rather Gothic and somewhat Edgar Allen Poe:
Shot the bolt in the wall, rusted the key;
Now the echoes of all frightful memory
Intrude in the silence.
sweaq123 ???
sweaq123 ..out running mortality..insanity..my family!!?
This is almost a Judas Priest song
