I’ve taught myself to smile on the mirror every single time I see myself in one. It really tricked my brain into thinking I was happier. It’s helped my self esteem and confidence a lot!

I always advise people who are retiring to have something to "retire to" instead of "retire from". I retired to a part-time fitness job at our local Y which I did part-time for years before. Keeps me fit and social:)

I work on a place where there are a lot of people that can retire but choose to keep working for a little more money. I talk to everyone I can: find something you can do, volunteer, travel, the world is bigger than this job you've had for 30 years. Their argument is "I don't want to stay home all day."
They don't see retirement as the freedom I see. During the pandemic, when I was working from home I could focus and do my job from 5 to 9 am I did so much with the rest of my day. Now that I have to show up, go to lunch, walk there and back I feel I have so little time for my stuff. And I am not producing more work.

i find it interesting how most of what you describe here, Kallie, gleaning from all these researches and books can actually be found in one very famous book: the Bible !! I love when science comes up with these "new" "discoveries" when our loving, heavenly Father has been speaking them to us since the beginning of time !!!!! : " Love God with all your heart, soul, and all that is within you" " love your neighbor " Give thanks to the Lord for He is good" "Give thanks in all things" " again, i say, give thanks"...and these are the first quotes that just come up to my mind as i sit here !!! Nothing like good confirmation !!! #Truth ~

In order to control my retail therapy problem, I set up a separate account with a debit card just for my personal spending. Every month I transfer a specific amount for that month into the account. Once I'm done with it, I'm done for the month. I check my balance every day so I am aware each day what I'm starting with. I am definitely spending less!

Give thanks in every circumstance." 🙏🌿🎶 All of your advice is spot on what I learn from the Bible: being kind to others, not being materialistic, practicing moderation in eating habits, being grateful, and seeking purpose in our lives (God's purpose for us is to live in relationship with Him, our Creator, and to love Him and praise Him!)... thanks for sharing your thoughts based on psychology studies...good stuff!☆

I have a friend who has done some of these things, and also invested in her health, and her vibe has changed COMPLETELY. She dealt with so much negativity in her past and shared her journey on her social media, including her journey to help others improve their wellness through nutrition and exercise. SO MUCH POSITIVITY. I’ve also been gravitating toward people (like you Kallie!) who focus on realistic happiness and more intentional living, instead of the people who are filtering their lives to look “perfect.”

If anyone struggles with depression (raises hand), I highly recommend the book 'Upward Spiral'. The first half of the book is pretty dense (but still interesting if you want to know the relationship between the exact regions of your brain, and how they act when depressed), but the second half digs deep into some of the same actionable tools Kallie's mentioned here.

I recently bought new living room furniture and a used dining table, and I find that the things I use or see daily(car, furniture, coffee maker) bring me joy daily. However things that get put in a drawer or closet (clothes, shoes, etc) give me joy during the purchasing and receiving phases and only give me joy for a very short time, and after the initial “high” no longer give me daily pleasure.

My favourite random act of kindness is when I go thru the drive thru, if I have it in my budget, I ask the window clerk how much the bill is for the vehicle behind me. If it is in budget, I pay for it. I learned this when our daughter was working at a Tim Horton's Coffee Shop in Nova Scotia. The staff would just keep record of how many in a row happened... the longest train of paying it forward was over 250 people paying for the next person's order.... Kinda amazing. Now I am working on the Tim's out here. Hugs from Esquimalt

Hi Kallie I am science major so love studies and you explain very well. Next topic: I noticed you have your batteries loose in container. I have been told that if you have positive and negative on same side it can drain your batteries. That is why in package the are positive up and negative down. Amazon has battery checker for under 8 dollars and does check all sizes. Keep up excellent videos! My kids are raised now but we adopted a boy and 2 years later adopted twin daughters. I look back and we were busy but had a wonderful time.

Excellent video! Boy, did this really speak to me. To others, I seem to be a very happy person. I laugh and joke and try to be very kind to others. But inside lives a ball of sadness that I’ve tried to dissolve through spending money I don’t have, therapy, self help books etc. I know there has to be a happier me out there - I have a fantastic husband, beautiful daughter but chronic pain, financial burdens and unaddressed anger from childhood stand in my way. I refuse to give up. I am going to save your video, get the book and make a plan to do at least one thing a day to move me closer to true happiness. Thank you. ~ Linda

Kallie don't worry about speaking about books and sending them our way. I always enjoy it when someone recommends new types of books that I know will bring value to my life. I have found some and have heard of some books through RUclips creators.
In fact, when my mother gave me a picture of me and my great grandmother when I was young. I was very impressed! She seemed vivid, happy and still actively standing up, holding onto my hand when I was about two or three years. She lived a long, fulfilling life for 106 years! Great grandfather lived until 99 years, which is almost unheard of nowadays! Keep on going Kallie and keep on inspiring, thanks for everything that you do! 💕

I was falling victim to being over helpful and taking away from myself so much my life was falling apart from lack of boundaries
Life is all about learning :)

I took a positive psychology class last fall, fun to hear someone talk about this topic in our everyday life in this space!! Thank you! Just a side note, I have worked with patients who have impaired brains, so sometimes this techniques aren’t all that is needed if you struggle chemically or structurally feel happiness at all. It’s good to remember some people need real help, maybe even deep brain stimulation, which has helped reverse profound depression where someone can’t feel anything because their brain structurally just is missing the wiring to feel the effects of dopamine and therefore happiness. Thanks Callie, your the best!

Literally even in the winter when it's 20 degrees outside I'll put on my coat and just go sit on my porch swing for a minute or two when I need a break. I ALWAYS feel better. My dad died four weeks ago very unexpectedly. I’ve been so lost and having health and mental health issues since that happened. I let my house get messy and I can definitely say that putting in the work to have my home be neat and tidy makes a lot of difference in my mental state. I want to get back into cooking as well because I haven’t really even cooked since he passed away. The gratification I get from making a healthy meal that’s delicious is much more than when I order food and eat.

I am very sorry for your loss. I understand how hard it is when a loved one dies suddenly. I lost my mother suddenly, May 2001. It hit me very hard. I had trouble eating, and lost a lot of weight. Then Sept 11th happened, and it took a toll on my already grieving self. I had to keep telling myself that I know that my mom would always want happiness for me. I also felt glad that she was spared the awfulness of 9/11. I had to be strong for my kids, too. Losing her is still the worst thing that has happened in my life, but I have learned to look for positive things in life, and hope that she is happy, looking down at me doing my best.

It’s so normal to go through such sadness and depression when we lose a parent. I still have a hard time, but not letting my life become stagnant and untidy helps me cope. It’s ok to have our sad days, as long as we can find some joy in other days. Even the smallest pleasure and one step at a time will help. Also reaching out to others like you just did could help. My heart is with you. Keep moving forward, even if we go backwards, we can move forward again.Peace and hope ❤️

I understand that people may want to know which companies are the "happiest" ones to work for, but in reality most people don't have the option of working for those specific employers. I think the key is to find ways to find happiness wherever you are. That is the goal that I think we need to work toward.

Like with the clutter and cortisol one ... It's just as likely that having higher cortisol leads to more clutter as it is that clutter causes higher cortisol. I would venture to say both things are true. Like... I can have my house pristine... And my depression and anxiety get bad and next thing I know it looks like a bomb went off in my house. But also looking at that mess then makes my depression and anxiety worse. It becomes a vicious cycle. (So what you said still reigns true, if I clean my house I'm probably gonna feel better, my cortisol will go down).
I just point this out because I know it can be easy (at least for me) to self blame and get down even more because of the thought process of "well I caused myself to feel this way by letting my house get cluttered" leads me to a guilt and shame spiral. But if I remind myself that sometimes my mental health gets in the way and I didn't cause it to do that, I find it easier to say "ok it might not be my fault it happened but it is my responsibility to make it better" and get in the groove of tidying

When you first started the video I thought “oh, great. Some toxic positivity coming”. But it wasn’t that at all! This is a really wonderful list of concrete things a person can do to aid in their happiness and not a general “you can fix your depression by changing your attitude “. Thanks for this! 💗 you’re the best!

Serious power to affect is positively or negatively. Saying I'm always late, messy, disorganized, getting things wrong, all heavy for our psychological well being. Think, I not late every time, therefore, I am not "always" late. Being honest, and truthful, I am late too often. I work to manage my time and scheduling better. Berating ourselves is not healthy, and other people do not find it attractive to hear such negative self talk. Late, is different than, I'm stupid, ugly, too short, too tall, etc. Speak truth, in the most positive way possible. It makes a big difference in how we feel about ourselves.

I went through my social media and deleted accounts that I found to be negative and sought out accounts that I thought were positive and it's made a huge change. I can look at my social media accounts and find I'm laughing a lot and feeling happier. It's A LOT of silly animal accounts. 😁

I have recently cut down to 15 min in the morning only. I belong to a lot of groups and it’s very helpful. Now I don’t scroll. Only go on to look at notifications, memories, groups if there’s something I’m dealing with in my life and need more support or ask questions. I had to cut down to this level because I was wasting a lot of time on social media (down the rabbit hole).

I used to spend to make myself feel better and it only worked temporarily. Once I came out of the fog of anxiety and depression, I realized that I spent because I was very unhappy because my marriage was not as fulfilling as I hoped it would be. I hated seeing myself in pictures, but I can usually look at myself and love myself for me (even though I am at my highest weight ever). I have also spent the past few years (even prior to covid) weeding people out of my life who did not make me feel good about myself. I also do my best to avoid listening to all the doom and gloom there is in the world and focus on being thankful and grateful who I have in my life as well as what I have that a lot of others do not. We take so much for granted and one day we could be left with nothing or no one. I love making personalized gifts for people and I especially love when someone gives me something that is me (not just generic gifts), that shows they really put some thought into it. I finally learned to love myself for who I am and stopped trying to be someone I cannot and could never be. If someone doesn't like that, then they don't need to be in my life! I am also working on decluttering my home. I know I have too many things that I will likely never use, so it needs to go. Thank you!

There's one piece of advise that I rarely hear from experts, it's the popular phrase, "whistle while you work". In my life experience, I've seen people who are happy through most part of the day are constantly singing or whistling their favorite tune, and even dancing. It's not the panacea, but it helps a lot.

I tell you what, I didn't realize how much time I was spending on Amazon. And when you go to the grocery store and hand over $123 it's a whole different thing than just sliding the debit card. Wow.

Great videos! Although you're saying 'gratification', I think you may mean 'gratitude'. They apparently are quite different - after looking at their differences and definitions. Gratification leans towards 'instant gratification' which can become quite a problem. Whereas 'gratitude' is a deep feeling of happiness.
