It's amazing how natural everything is. This is one of those shows where you're watching it, and even though it's right in front of your face, you're almost imagining another show on top of what you're seeing---the ambiance it creates is just pitch-perfect and authentic that it really does feel like the city, or at least a slightly-idealized version of what the city is. What a sincerely great piece of art. I really wish there was more animation produced like this at a major level nowadays, that focused on day-to-day interactions and conversations between regular people. Nothing even really happens through the whole episode, but it's so completely satisfying to watch. A totally wonderful effort all-around. Job well done to everyone involved.
I was a freshamn in college when I remember seeing this show (i think i caught it in re-runs though). I remember thinking how cool it was and whether early adulthood was really supposed to be like that. This show really captures what I feel like life is like for young adults living in downtown NYC (think Soho). This time and feel never really came back. Now it's all about looking as rich as possible, wearing matching tweed sets from fast fashion stores to take instagram pictures, saving up for designer handbags and white platform sneakers.
I feel like this is just influenced by a) Nostalgia for a past time. b) thinking young people care about social media more than they really do (they dont after a certain point). Life is what you make it. People still got bills to pay and a life to live, and thats not gonna change within two decades. I assure you, the nyc life of getting a coffee and a cheap bagel while going for a walk through a nature urban blend of scenery is still very much a thing. Free events and making a day out of “nothing” happens regularly (at least how i was raised) no one got expendable cash on the regular.
