  • Prime MInister Yousuf Raza Gillani has been found in contempt of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Aside from this infraction, he and his family are allegedly involved in billions of Rupees of corruption, nepotism, cronyism.
On the other hand is the case of Arslan Lateef Butt of Gujranwala, Punjab. He is a thirteen year old who was booked in an alleged case of kite flying, after school. Yes, flying kites has been deemed illegal in Punjab. Police kicked-in his door, broke open the bathroom in which he had been hiding, and while no elder member of the family was present at the premises, they slapped him around and dragged him to the police station. There, they cut an FIR and chalan at once and put Arslan Lateef in jail.
When the parents of Arslan came to know about this, they rushed to the police station, tried to get him out, but the police wouldn't let him. Arslan spent the night in jail, taken out in chains and lock, with seasoned criminals, the following morning.
Now compare that with the case of our PM, Gillani. A man who has been in and out of jail all his life on criminal charges. The PPP is trying to paint him as a "hero" and "martyr" of democracy. He has million dollar lawyers, like Aitezaz Ahsan representing him. He has a cavalcade of sycophants, the likes of "Dr" Babar Awan, encouraging and egging him on. Who have made the SC, the butt of jokes on the evening news. But even then, Gillani and his cohorts have been given every opportunity in the book and more, to come clean. SC judges have been seen to bend over backwards, to avoid punishing crime committed in high offices.
But now, according to Talat Hussain, the people of Pakistan who have been at the receiving end of this dual measure of justice, one for the poor and the other for the rich and powerful, are getting wise and in the coming days and months and years, they will likely rethink who they send to City Hall and Islamabad to represent their interests.
