One thing I learned this year is swiss chard can grow in the snow and cold. It is the middle of January and I still have swiss chard in my garden that is edible. So I will be growing a several rows of it next year.

Thats nice but are you sure the chard didn't grow during autumn when temperatures were still warm and is just still hanging out all winter long now waiting to be picked? 🤗

Hi Melissa, I think the comments you were making about your dad never having to water in the PNW is something worth commenting on. The region is historically wetter than others, as you said, but in the last 5-10 years we've started feeling the 20+ year drought west of the Colorado river that has dried out so many of the other states. It's literally way drier here than it used to be, so I think it's worth adding that point into your conversation about plants that need less water. One day, we hope, that water will come back and the drought will end, but in the meantime we're having to water our gardens that never really needed to be before!

We did a heavy mulch this year on the main vegetable garden and only watered twice the entire summer. Was really happy with the results

I’ve been trying to slowly learn more about what was grown in my area for a while now (Texas piney woods). But it’s been hard to find anything but general categories. (corn, squash..) Nothing specific. I’ve started some landraces in my efforts to find varieties that will grow well here.
Feels a little less lonely listening to y’all. I could talk about seeds for days but I don’t know anybody who gives a hoot about them!

I recommend winter gold keeper tomatoes. They easily store in room temperature until March from October.
