As someone who just moved to Norway I can confirm the last point. I've been to a few bars in the last few months, and every time I get swarmed by drunk Norwegians who all of a sudden want to speak English to me and tell me how great Norway is.
Only real downside to this is I end up drinking more and I get more and more Canadian. The more Canadian I get the less they can understand my English.

Living in Minnesota in the United States, I had a Norwegian family friend that visited and called the state "Little Norway". When I visited Norway, it didn't feel any different from being in Minnesota as far as interacting with people.

Taco Friday ?!?! Silly Norwegians, tacos are for Tuesday! (Well, they're for any day of the week, really. But, if they're going to have a designated day, it's Tuesday. Not Friday, geez.) Greetings from the Lone Star State.

    • @LifeOnHoth
      @LifeOnHoth 4 года назад +1

yeehaw! Most Norwegian doesn't know what the Lone Star State is :). U can have TacoTuesday over there, but we aint having none of that of course. It's actually Taco-Friday (not tex mex friday even tho it's actually tex-mex and not taco so to speak that norwegiands "love" so much. And the twist - It's TOTALLY a myth! Most norwegians does not eat tex-mex on Fridays. Any day of the week is far more common. It's a thing created by food companies with the help of TV commercials mostly. I don't know many that actually enjoys tex-mex to that extent. Most are - well - mostly sick and tired of it. What should really be in this video is how good extremely many norwegians are at bragging about ourselves, and stepping on a lot of other's toes, judging other cultures without even making an effort to understand the differences etc. :). But dam - it's taco friday, not tex-mex friday! :D

Interesting... As an ethnic Norwegian living in Seattle, our Norwegian culture is very strong here. We have this term "The Seattle Freeze" which means so many Nordic people settled here over the past century that it's the same protocol for interacting in public as in Norway, however, you still on occasion have some stranger randomly talking to you. I travel from time to time back in Norway, as in 2014 to visit my cousins and I get on a train from Oslo to Bergen. In Drammen, this guy get's on the train and sits next to me and carries on på norsk, chatting up a storm, so there is the exception. Though I grew up in Seattle, I was raised with a Norwegian mindset, so when I go to Norway it seems home, though I have to calculate spending money in Norway. It is true about the drinking, we are quite reserved and open up with some drinks to come alive. The common and annoying thing an ethnic Norwegian is commonly asked here, so you eat lutefisk all the time? eyes roll back, especially when we have the freshest fish around. We also pride ourselves in having the largest Syttende Mai parade outside of Norway, on the actual constitution day for 128 years...

Not every norwegian person is like that. This is a generalization. I'm the kind of person who talks to anyone, any age, any race, background, from all walks of life. IF I feel like it, I do. And sometimes I prefer to be in my own little world with awesome music on my ears when I am outside going grocery shopping or just going for a walk or whatever, and I love that I don't get interrupted and sucked out of my little bubble too often. People have respect for each others space here and I like that.
So how did it go? I see you wrote this 4 months ago, so you have most likely been here now, right? Hope you enjoyed your time here =)

Hey Sunny, how are you :D? Haha, well just wanted to comment that I find 2 weird things norwegians do familiar!
First one is the very first one you said, I live in Spain, I'm Spanish and I usually do it. Doesn't matter if I'm in a hurry or not, maybe I dont feel like talking, maybe I'm just listening to music and dont want a conversation I don't know, but most of the time I'm walking somewhere I ignore everything that surrounds me. And I'm not the only one, the northern part of Spain is kinda introvert, which leads us to the second familiar thing! Yes, most of us (at the north) are a tad colder and introvert than most visitors think, but give us a few beers and we'll tell you everything you don't want to know x)
BTW a chocolate bar here can be found for less than 1€ haha

I have the exact same thing with alcohol. I talk smoothly to any given stranger and keep conversations going for as long as I want. But when I'm sober I'm usually awkward around strangers and I don't know what the hell to tell them. Also alcohol makes me say what I really think, instead of just agreeing and being polite whilst actually thinking the opposite...

+Patollaj Usually in the US if you say hello to someone they will say hello back. Unless they're rude then they will more than likely just ignore you. So no not every country is like that.

I am new to this channel and I like it. It's funny you mentioned Norwegians being introverted. I come from Greece and Greeks are considered to be loud extroverts. But I am quiet, calm and highly introverted. I think my mentality is closer to a Chinese person. Traditional Chinese profile is: Quiet, calm, shy, reserved and hard working. And emotional too. Most Greeks speak English well, but it also depends on how old they are. My father for example could never learn English because of bad teacher. But he speaks some German and French. I think Sunny is funny, smart and very cute. I am starting to learn Spanish because of her videos :-p

Hehe Dutch people ignore others in public too. About Norwegians (and scandinavians in general) you forgot: 1. taking off shoes indoors. Also in other people's homes or in the office. Just walk in socks in at work... 2. Pizza and kebab in restaurant 3. When announcing an artist on a show, saying the song before the artist, like 'It's Chandelier with Sia!' Like, what? 4. Writing tiny local news items in the paper: mr. Nilsen's cat got lost. 5. Drinking at home before going out. 6. Brown goat cheese that looks like melted plastic. 7. Rice porridge 8. Eurovision party at someone's house. Etc. ;)

I think they got the same overalls in Finland. But i don't know if they are used for some graduation "rituals" or in other occasions.
About replying to "How are you" I think Norwegians and Germans are the same. We also answer the question, although we usually keep the reply short. It is then up to the person who asked to inquire to get more details if he/she wants to know. And usually you would answer with more or less details depending on how good you know the person asking the question.

About the food - The Reindeer from Finnmark is my favorite. The cod fish from the Fjords are amazing too! Especially when I went in February and the cod was fresh. I went to Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, Ålesund, and Tromsø. Going back at the end of August!!
I’m not a big fan of the sheep head they eat in Bergen. Have you tried it?

With my culture backround everytime it's the season for certain fruits and veggies we pickle it or can it, especially peaches, strawberries, beets, pickles, also apples into applesauce. We make our own sausage, perogies with cottage cheese, our own noodles, schnitzel, we make our own soups and bread

living in Norway would be kinda hard for me because I tend to just smile at people as a reflex and its so awkward when they don't smile back cuz I didn't even mean to and I'm like ugh, I'm introverted and extroverted at the same time cause in certain situations i love talking to people and being loud but other times I just like don't talk or even look at me

In Poland is also normal to ignore strangers in public. It is even rude to tok to people who are ment to srike up a conversation.
I think it is a common element in most countries in europe.

I'm American and say "How are you?" Asking sincerely how somebody is. Like, usually they'll reply good or bad and then based off that I'll make a conversation. Like if they say bad, I try to figure out what's wrong and help or if they say good I ask what they'd done that day to try to make discussion.

It bothers me SO much when people ask me how I am. It didn't used to until a friend who studied abroad in Spain pointed out that people in the US weren't actually asking. I totally do the same, respond to them, and people think it's weird.

Your Russefeiring is somewhat similar to the Dutch 'ontgroening' (hazing) which new students of a University must undergo the first week of University in order to enter a sorority. Is it as bad as here, where a couple of students actually died of alcohol poisoning or dit get hospitalized?
And yes, you gotta love Santa Maria Tex Mex, although I'm more into their burrito's.
