After reading this back to myself, I must issue this PSA... For Curtis' eyes only, or anyone who's as broken and warped as me lol.
You could hone one big assed engine with that sucker.... Although it doesn't really suck anything does it? It more resembles a f machine kinda action... Or with all the thrusting and twisting motions I'm picturing more of a giant fisting machine... Omg that's a bit disturbing isn't it, and brutal lmao. I'm a little worried how my mind works sometimes lol.
On a more wholesome note the spin cam was a bit of fun chaos... and my brain just now visualised those 2 things happening at the same time... I am right to be concerned, aren't I?

We saw how easy it was to place the new parts, but the other genius part is how easy it was for him to make the jig. He ran bolts through tabs on the original and just cut flat stock to join all the points. The only critical part was to ensure the jig wouldn't flex too much. If he builds more of the same cylinders later, the payoff will be huge. It goes to show that sometimes the best solutions are the simplest ones. The guide to weld the standoffs was also very smart. It takes some skill to be smooth while changing direction in welding, but he is great at it and running spray arc makes it look like it could have been done by a robot in the factory.

He recovered about two hours later, looking much healthier, hopped over to where I was sitting gave a couple of squawks and some chatter and then finally got to fly off. A hundred years ago, machinists could do mathematics in their head, or they figured it out on paper, having to do the calculations themselves, instead of having a computer do all of it. I am constantly amazed at the accurate results that can be achieved by honing such a long bore with stones that wear at unknown rates. With a carbide tool the size pretty much stays at a known size whereas stones are steadily wearing down. When using a manual style honing machine to hog out 1 mm (~.040 inch) there is even more of a chance that the bore ends up wavy. These CNC honing machines have changed the game!

It's not often we get to see the difference between an old-school entirely mechanical/hydraulic machine and a modern CNC machine of the same type, and this is the best example I can think of. Contrasting the information and control which is available through the new Sunnen machine with the purely operator skill-based process of operating your older machine is a treat. It's also an amazing demonstration of how important and useful it is to learn a lot of the detail on a manual machine so you develop feel and intuition, because that same feel and intuition results in being a much better operator of the CNC machine.
The way you used the load gauge and a wealth of knowledge about steel shrinkage from welding to manually correct the middle section of the barrel before getting the interior bore uniform enough that you could set the machine on full auto probably provides enough information to produce a doctoral thesis on the complementary nature of manual and computer assisted machining, and using the spindle load gauge to infer the size and uniformity of the barrel section that bore gauge can't reach is icing on the research cake.

I took metal working shop about 49 or 50 years ago in school. I never had an interest in metal working at all, I'm a carpenter. Watching you take a raw hunk of metal and making something that we all see often, but never give it another thought of where it comes from, is so fringing interesting. It's like the kid who thinks vegetables come from the store only. Oh, people grow them in the ground?
I realize the way I put it doesn't make a lot of sense, but you get my drift. Watching from Maine, US I love your videos
