  • How do you do a mid-quel to one of the greatest sci-fi anime of all time? Apparently, someone thought the answer was to throw everything but the kitchen sink in there and hope the resulting mess turns out to be entertaining. Does it work? Um...
    Next review will be on an action anime.

    I personally loved the anime. The different story lines made everyone else feel like they actually had a life outside of the main story

    I will say. While it's not as good as the original Steins Gate, I do like it does something different instead retreading old things while at the same time not completely making it feel like a whole nother show. It also help expands some of the characters like Daru and Mayuri further exploring them and the new characters were great. I also like how they showed the struggle Okabe took to reach Steins Gate showing how much importance the message he sent in the original really was. I guess we really didn't need this considering the story of the original is over, but I do think it's still a good addition to the series.

    The reason the story feels fragmented and disconnected is because the VN splits the character and narrative arcs through multiple routes/endings. It's not like the original Steins;Gate, where you could essentially experience the entire story through the true route/ending. So the anime had to mix story bits from multiple routes from the VN into one storyline much like Fate/Stay Night. And even then, it wasn't able to cover everything. Kagari's character, for example, is very undercooked and it's also the reason why Kaede and Fubuki's characters were completely undeveloped in the anime.

    • @ShadowACS1
      @ShadowACS1  5 лет назад +1

      Can you imagine a Fate/Stay Night anime that tried to adapt all three routes at once?

    • @winters_revolt
      @winters_revolt 5 лет назад

      @@ShadowACS1 That would be such a mess... The original simply incorporated the other arcs into the Fate arc, and we got a decent product overall. Apparently, Heavens Feels was released into two or three movies. Still need to get around to watching those.

    Steins;Gate 0 is the "Metal Gear Solid 4" of the series, trying to bring everything together and winding up a little convoluted and cringey. Source readers will know that the VN for S;G0 was a lot less linear than the original, so with the anime they had to combine all the routes into a single narrative. The original was more like a highway leading to the True End, with the individual endings being exits you could get off at. With the adaptation, they fortunately cut out most of the things from the VN that were really stupid (like Kagari's appearance changing), and improved on the ending with the after-credits scene. The characters that suffered the most from the adaptation were Kagari and Reyes. One thing I will note is it doesn't have the same director as the original anime, and a number of the scenes definitely suffer. I think fans will still generally find it enjoyable overall, especially the last 4 episodes or so.

    I would disagree that this was unnecessary like some are saying because how another version of Okabe sent a message to himself needed an explanation. It's good they expanded upon that and told the story of how he got there. It feels even more earned than it originally did. Also, even though it is sad that Kirasu is missing, I can't complain about here not being there. It's the time line where he didn't save her. It's exploring that. I think it was good to expand upon those things. I also think you're being harsh on the future shown in the show. Also from what I understand, the way the visual novel for 0 was made, made it even more difficult to adapt. It was like Fate with all the different routes being related and building upon each other, so that's why there were characters there that didn't get fleshed out enough. They were important and needed, so they couldn't be cut out, but they also didn't have enough time to and made it difficult to explain everything. I was also hoping that this was going to be your next review when you said the next was going to be a sci-fi anime.

    My problem with S;G0 is that I didn't get anything from it. If I didn't watch it I wouldn't have missed a thing. It was trying to grab at what made the original so great but managed to grab nothing.

  • @sailorlily8030
    @sailorlily8030 5 лет назад +1

    There are a few issues I have with S;G 0, but I do think it is a great addition considering that it does help complete some character arcs, specifically Okabe and Mayuri, while allowing other characters to have more agency in wanting to save the future. Other concepts like Daru/Suzuha's relationship, and Moeka as an actual ally this time, also get fleshed out more. You could kinda react to it like how people would with a prequel. It might not be required to watch it, but it does give a lot of context to where the characters are at the end of their journey. I at least enjoyed Steins;Gate 0 more than Chaos;Head and Robotics;Notes.
    One thing I do wanna say is that only the Alpha future in the og series was a dystopia. This future is a war setting where Suzuha says that she expects humanity to be extinct by 2050. As well as, Steins;Gate 0 isn't a couple years after Kurisu dies but only in the following winter after she died.

    Quick description, it's basically Evangelion meets Danganronpa, but way more grounded in reality than either.

    interesting. I'm making my way through Steins;Gate & was excited for 0. I thought since it was Steins;Gate 0 that it was a prequel. That may have been a more interesting idea. Show how all the characters met & got together. I haven't watched the whole show yet. Maybe that's already explained but that's just my thought. May watch it. Thanks for the review. You always have the best lines & you make me laugh. Which I need nowadays

    It's the story of how Okabe became the guy that sends Okabe the d-mail from the future. When you see the video of him telling Okabe to go back and save Kurusu, that version of Okabe had to have come from somewhere right? Well that's what S;G0 is about basically.

  • @luisitopalustre5947

    One thing I disagree here is what you said with the beta worldline. It's not a dystopian future, it's a future where powers have an arms race for the time machine and an actual war broke out.

  • @JimFaindel

    I am gonna say that the visual novel... is not any less of a mess, but it is way darker and shocking, which helped diferenciate it from the original. I found that the best way to watch this show is right before the last episode of the original, where it chronologically belongs.

  • @waszner
    @waszner 5 лет назад

    This is not just any alternate timeline.
    In the main steins gate time loop, this is always the second timeline that happens.
    first 23 (I think it was that much) episodes happen, but this is the first timeline, so no message from future Okabe---> Steins gate 0 ---->first 23 episodes and now there is a message from future (SG 0) Okabe
    And yes, it's not as good as the original, but let's be honest, could anything be?

  • @dracmanish

    Overall I liked 0 but it could've been longer then 23 eps. The stories with Daru/Suzuha and Maho I liked, but the parts with Kagari and the twist villain I took issue with. Again I feel if 0 had had more eps. to flesh these 2 characters out more it would've been a lot better cause I felt like I needed to read the Visual Novel just to understand why their important to the story which is NOT something I should be forced to do just to fully enjoy the anime. Also if you haven't seen the movie I recommend it kurisu has a big role in it.

    I didn't want to watch this until I heard reviews on it and how it ended, if they brought Kurisu back. Well, now I have no interest in watching after finding out about the reviews (including yours) and the like. Another reason was, well, the original ended on a perfect note, there was even a special that was a couple minutes that took place after that show ended and it was great. So, why make a se- midquel in the first place? Who knows. Good review though, I know you don't hate it, but I'm definitely going to have to give this one a hard pass.

    Sequels don't always need to be made if the original is complete, It's kind of the same for games, take marvel ultimate alliance, the two games made for that series were good and didn't really need another one, they were just two fun oldish games but than some rejects come along and pretend to "revive" the franchise like it was fucking dead when in fact the series just ended because god forbid a series ends and does go on for the end of time milking everyone, moral of the story: DON'T MAKE POINTLESS... FRANCHISE KILLING SEQUELS! but back on topic... since I haven't seen Steins Gate I can't really say much but if you say the story had everything I guess I gotta believe you XD wow I ranted to much about how I hate MUA 3 sorry guys :D
