    FINALLY A COLOMBIA VIDEO SO HYPE
    however lulo is rarely eaten as is, it's mostly used for juices or a beverage called lulada which is macerated pulp with lime served chilled

    • @PseudonymPersona
      @PseudonymPersona 6 лет назад +8

      also it's gritty because the fruit in the wild is really hairy and it can poke your fingers so they remove them

  • @rasapplepipe
    @rasapplepipe 6 лет назад +21

    That's comercial lulo the wild lulo has more flavor and is sweeter but not much it is always sour and used in in juices with added suger or eaten as a chaser(pasante). The wild lulo is about half that size.

    Hi Weird Explorer ! I Love all your video's ! You tell me about fruit's that I've never heard of. It's amazing to hear about and see things that look as if you went to another planet to retrieve ! My questions to you is just exactly how many different fruits are there on planet Earth ? And how many of them have you sampled so far ? Also do you think it's possible that one of them fruits might contain the cure for cancer or some other human ailment ? Thank you for everything you do and keep up the good work ! You are quite an amazing character !

    • @WeirdExplorer
      @WeirdExplorer  6 лет назад +9

      Thanks Nate. I've heard its something over 70,000 species of fruit. But when you get into cultivars... each species can have well over a thousand and that number is growing. Even if there were a market somewhere that magically had every fruit in existence available for free and magically in season and properly ripened and prepared, it would still be impossible to review it all. I've had maybe 400 or so species I think, its hard to say since a lot of things are fruits technically that you wouldn't think about... like corn. I think there are fruits that are helpful for certain ailments, but generally when there is a touted "miracle cure" I am extremely skeptical. I think some fruit may be helpful in the long run because it has certain vitamins or whatever, but I am doubtful about magic pill fruits that are supposed to quickly eradicate an ailment.

    Cool. I can't wait to try one. Also called naranjilla, beautiful plant. Mine has yet to fruit. The plant looks almost identical to cocona. The cocona fruit is supposed to be similar, too, but even better!

    I saw some seeds being sold online and wasn't sure if they'd be worth growing. From your description I'd like to say it is defiantly worth growing. I love citruses, especially Meyer lemons, lemonade lemons & kumquats as well as kiwis while they're still tough & tart. Very help full description, thanks Jared.
    From what I learned of naranjillas (lulos) is that they are covered in nasty spines, but I've never mined getting pricked for something delicious.

    I made my "shoping" in that plaza for several years, it's kind of medium size plaza, but there are bigger ones. Lulo is supposed to eat as juice adding sugar or peppermint or mint, very refreshing.

    • @WeirdExplorer
      @WeirdExplorer  6 лет назад +1

      Bigger? In Bogota?

    • @CarlosE213
      @CarlosE213 6 лет назад

      Well to be fair, lately the "plazas" have been disapering in Colombia because people find those ugly and outdated, people prefer malls and big stores, so the remaining plazas became smaller every year, but there still existing some, the biggest is "Corabastos" but it's very noisy and sometimes unorganized, but it's one of the biggest in Latinamerica after the main plaza in Mexico City. Maybe those links are interesting to you, I think there are english version too goo.gl/cALr4Q

    I watched this video when it first came out...today I finally found a lulo product in my area, imported from Colombia!
    HiT juice drink, and while it is mixed with pear and orange the taste is spot on to what he's talking about. The tomato flavor is there but not the savory part, there's kind of kiwi-ish flavor there? i recently tried cape gooseberries and this drink tastes almost exact to that.

    I wish I could grow it but it gets too hot here in Florida. Naranjilla is a very high elevation equatorial plant so it neither tolerates high temperatures or freezing temperatures. It grows in a climate with cool but frost-free nights year round.

    Was thinking about growing it. If you look up pictures of the plant it has huge thorns on it everywhere. Multiple people on the seed website reviewed it saying "really good but these thorns hurt so bad so I will not grow it".

      lulo has like small "spikes" to defend against bugs and small animals, it's just a little bit annoying, but don't worry it's not dangerous, this plant grows better in no so hot places, between 15-20 °C

    • @rippspeck
      @rippspeck 5 лет назад +1

      The spikes can be avoided quite easily. Only the thickest ones underneath large leaves are rigid enough to actually hurt you. Brambles are much worse, in my opinion.

      I grew a plant from Akebia Quinata, didnt know it needs the pollen of another plants male flower, so i got rid of it, in a humane way, it lives in the forest now and thrives like crazy xD

      IndicA BerZerK If you don't live in its native range and it "thrives like crazy" in the forest, you probably live in one of the regions where it's an invasive species. If so, please remove it from the wildland.

      I live in a Forest and planted it next to another Akebi ;-) dont you worry. This Forest called Eilenriede was given to us citizens of Hannover for our help in a Heir War of Lüneburg in 1371, with the permission to use it for our own good, aka plant fruits mushrooms herbs veggies etc, we have a local ranger he is awesome and shows people what you can eat, plant and whats toxic etc.
