The Jupiter grape sounds very interesting! Something I would like to try for sure. Plus Joy would be, well, a joy to taste. Comparing fruits to their candy counterparts is always neat
Looks like Vostok got into the labels. ;) I will try to sort them out. 1:01 Reliance is small, pink, fruity, and round. It is the pink "KAWAII!!!" grape. The breeder calls it a WILL ROGERS grape --- Everybody loves it. Vine is very good, too. Only drawback is the pink color can be muddy, but in San Diego it's a nice pink. Raisins are even better than the fruit. 1:01 Everest is the brand-new big blue "Welchy" (Concord flavored) one. Breeding is really coming along when you have a labrusca grape the size of a muscadine. 2:38 That one can't be Glenora, as Glenora is spherical. I'm guessing Faith. What I love about Faith is the lovely soft velvety skins, a real pleasure in the mouth. A very laid-back flavor, but it keeps you coming back. 3:40 Yes, Joy turns the acid and Fruit-Kool-Aid notes up to 11; these were a tiny bit underripe. As with a high-acid apple like GoldRush, they do eventually calm down. Joy makes other grapes taste like dish-water, it's that strong. The notes I was getting was almost . . . balsamic vinegar, but make the vinegar into a Kool-Aid flavor. (?!) 4:40 Yes, Jupiter's ethereal/lychee notes are pretty unmistakable! The pop of lychee flavor in your mouth is very addictive . . . but the skins are munchy like cole-slaw with the squeaky texture of balloon-rubber. BUT YOU DON'T CARE, because you keep eating them for the rush of heavenly ethereal flavor... 5:54 Yes, Compassion. I don't want to be mean to Dr. Clark, as he's really working hard to provide customers the crunchy grapes they want. But I found Compassion . . . too crunchy, almost carroty. Maybe they "relax" a little if they get a few more weeks on the vine. HAVE TO SEE. This was the first year from Compassion. Supposed to be a great fruity/muscat combination flavor. I'll need a few more harvests to make up my mind. 7:15 New York Muscat, confirmed because of the seed. My mom says, "You can get drunk on the juice alone." A classic. As far as the ACTUAL Glenora, I think they got eaten up first, as I didn't see any in the review. ;( I don't blame Jared; the Glenora were OUTSTANDING this year, like crunchy blueberries. Less exotic since you can find them in the grocery store, but the first time I had a cotton candy grape my mind was blown. Really wish I could try these!
I was 15 and the orchard store I worked at accidentally got a small package of grapes - maybe 2'x1' styrofoam and packed in dry ice, instead of a regular crate. Small and greenish-purple. Being an idiot kid, I didn't realize anything was wrong. Put them out on display at the highest price, tried a few and my head nearly exploded. I bought and ate the entire crate before my boss realized what had happened. The bottom of the package was marked "champagne grapes" and I have no idea what the price would have been for them (in 1990), but when I saw the look on his face, I told him some customers had wandered in and bought them all:) No regrets - they were absolutely amazing.
Shout out to CRFG! I’m a member too and their plant sales are part of the reason I’ve been able to collect so many amazing weird fruit species! Some of the members have members that rival the best botanical garden collection. It would be amazing if you were able to come here and do some sort of collab or talk with/to the group one of these days!
Have you had concord grapes before? I grow them because they are hard to find fresh since they don't travel well and most are bought up for juice/jelly production. Just make sure to eat the skin too since that has a ton of flavor/nutrients!
What's not to like about this video? It's fascinating! I'd love to try all these varieties - especially the marshmallow and the ethereal. I never dreamed there'd be a creamy grape and a grape whose flavor is indescribable.
best grape i had is a black musket grape organic from the farm local website, seeded aswell, seeded grapes are so much better, the little cruch the weird syrup like flavor
@@WeirdExplorer oh yeah. I’m dying for those patented grapes to be made available to the wider hobby-growing public. I’ve never wanted to grow grapes until these weird and delicious varieties started coming out!
in Korea they eat mainly the grapes that taste like the 'fake' grape flavoring. It's just that particular variety they use for grape flavor apparently. Also, those grapes have quite a strong skin so they squeeze the pulp out and get rid of the skin. Also, they wont have it all year around. Koreans usually have relatively seasonal fruits.
i think you are referring to Vitis labrusca, not vinifera as in the video. this species have a "musk" aroma. muscat grape is a variety of viitis vinifera, it don't have thestrong skin and basically is just really sweet and floral
Funny though, in my area grows a wine, that matches your description. The owner don’t know where it came from. He bought the garden with the plant in the 90’. Since Korea is pretty much a antipode to said garden and was behind the iron curtain, this would be a interesting story to tell.
some of the wild grapes like Vitis rotundifolia (Wild muscadine grape), and Vitis aestivalis (summer grape) are really good so next time they’re in season I’ll see if I can get them to you.
Man I'd love to try these, especially the jupiter. Out of the odd grapes I have tried, my fave is the moon drop grape. Love their taste and amusing long shape
Grapes are among my favorite fruits! I've only tried a few varieties, and where I'm from they're not even labeled anything other than "red" and "green" so I don't know the names of the ones I've tried. Once I bought some in Brazil that had that artificial grape flavor you mentioned, it was quite strange to taste that flavor on an actual grape, didn't seem real lol
I tried some "cotton candy grapes" recently and while they were pretty inconsistent flavor-wise, many of them *really truly tasted exactly like cotton candy!!!* completely wild experience.
Fantastic video brother 👏 You have a beautiful and articulate way of describing these unusual fruits. As a conformation for pet owners, 2 years ago my 4 year old Border Collie got into my grape vines and very cutely would nibble a grape or two from the cluster. Little did I know how dangerous and toxic it was for dogs to eat them and he pasted away 3 months later from end stage kidney failure😭 Quite a difficult lesson I learned that grape season. If only I'd seen this video before that🤔 Keep up the great weird fruit exploration my friend =)
My favorite grapes I've ever had were shaped like fingers, they had a black exterior and they were white-light green inside, their flavor slightly resembled black raspberry and cherries and their texture was pretty snappy on the outside yet very smooth and soft on the inside, when I looked it up, it appears they are called sapphire grapes.
I forgot the name, but here in germany my local supermarket started to sell a type of purple grape, that tasted like mango with a hint of "Christmas spices".
I certainly haven't tasted that many grape varieties. I've only had the traditional red, green, & purple, plus cotton candy grapes & moondrop grapes. But, by far, my favorite is the moondrop grapes. Their incredible taste blew me away immediately and they're huge!
Everest are fantastic if you want sweetness in anything. put them in salads, oats, smoothies, sauces. Anything you want to be sweet, it is like adding very sweet cream like you blended honey and cream into a grape.
Very interesting. Here we have some that shows up now and then that are Cotton Candy grapes. Green seedless (if I recall correctly) and they actually taste like cotton candy. They're crunchy, but not on purpose, and I don't know the proper name of them. We also get Champaign grapes. Reddish and about the size of a pea. Also very good, crunchy and sweet, but just regular grape taste. If you ever see them, try them!
The best eating grapes I ever had was way back in mid 80s from Costco in its early years. The grapes were from Chile and the size of Gages or small plums. Very deep dark purple blue, near to black. And the taste was really like an extra sweet cross of blueberries & grapes - Never could figure the variety name.
Vitacea is a fascinating family. I'm currantly growing some "wild grape" varieties from namibia and angola. They're in the genus Cyphostemma and the furit they make are poisonous so I won't be tasting them, but they make amazing leaves and a great caudex.
I lived in wine country and was given some wine grapes to make a grape pie (yes they are a thing). OMG eating them raw they were soooo sweet and flavorful! I had no idea grapes could taste like that - no wonder they make strong wine - they have a ton of sugar.
Man I love grapes.. In Germany we have some in stores sometimes that taste exactly like cotton candy! Though I like all the fruity variants that also have some crunch!
It's crazy to me how sometimes I can tell what a fruit tastes like just by looking at it... even though i've never had it before. It's happened quite a few times, and for this video it was the glenora (that mark says was really the faith grape), by looking at it I just knew it had to be floral-like. Idk why my first thought was "that's a grandma grape" lmao
I can't remember the name, but the other day I had some small pink grapes. They were VERY densely packed on their stems, and they had the texture and dry/tart skin of a seeded grape, but they were totally seedless.
I mean it's prolly a boring answer, but the first time I got some Concord grapes from a farmers market, gurl........ A good fresh Concord grape is insane
I’ve had a wild variety of grape that grows here and I couldn’t believe how close to the “artificial grape” candy flavor it tasted. I wish there were more grape varieties in stores.
Probably vitis labrusca, fox grapes. Native to much of eastern North America. Artificial grape flavour and grape jelly flavour was made from concord grapes, which are a variety of vitis labrusca. They're not well-liked for their wine, though you can buy fox grape wine (think manishevitz), since they have an 'unpleasant' musky 'foxiness ' in their taste. I don't mind wine made from concord grapes personally, but the foxiness really is a dominating flavour.
I'm not sure, but I think he did an episode on that maybe a year ago. There are some walking trails in NYC where people are growing different plant varieties.
I know of a wine, that tastes like wine gummy. It’s mostly weird, full of seeds and the skin has a harsh taste. The plant is at least 40 years old. Sadly the owner don’t know the story behind this particular breed.
@@WeirdExplorer thank you genie of RUclips lol. Since last December I have been looking for a type of grape that looks like the buffalo grapes in size color and skin type, and the only thing I had to go off of was the unique taste from some that I jacked from someone’s garden long story… lol turned short I was startled by some raccoons that were on someone’s arbor when I looked turns out they were munching on the grapes that were trellised at their persons front gate so I was curious and tried one, was blown away so I took a few extra for the seeds but no luck. They had a very sweet taste that was more like candy with a hint of cotton candy flavour that slowly revealed its self as it sat in my mouth so I took a gamble on the buffalo grape hoping that local nurseries sold a limited variation but it seems like their is very little in detailed description on taste profile as I’m waiting for next year to finally find out what and if it was the right one it’s been one of the least detailed grapes or atleast from my attempts to search for something as in-depth as you go. Or even growing info but at this point I’m still crossing my fingers it’s the same as what I tried. Ps love what you do. When I was younger I remember people would go super in-depth on taste profiles of food items but now a days ( aside from you) I find on average most people keep it away to simple aka “these grapes taste great” or their my favourite. Came across one website that mentioned they have a cotton candy like taste so figured it would be a good start well I’ll find out come next year. Other than that I am trying to find a few more fruits that are unique and will grow here in Vancouver Canada as a tribute to my grandma and her farm back in Jamaica seeing that it’s Been a while since I’ve been kinda wanna stave off home sickness ( although I’m Canadian/Jamaican we used to go every two years but life is as it is) by starting something to remember her by you’ve gone over a few lemon varieties one of which sounded similar to one she had on her property that I’ve just been calling a sweet lime/lemon you could literally juice it without adding sugar and it has very textured skin. Needless to say more your channel has been a very uplifting breath of fresh air thank you and keep it up.
I suppose the first was the reliance because it looked like that much more. The grape flavouring taste what you are talking about may be the "labrusca" flavour?
The most "fake grape flavour" grape I know are the Ontario blue grapes, which I'm always happy to see on the shelves since we can buy them only a month per year. It would be very nice to have such a wide variety of grapes in groceries, but I guess the cost would be quite prohibitive at best, and its sad.
Where are Mickey and Friends grapes from? These greengrapes have indented lines and taste almost like water with slight hint of citrus. smooshy texture. I prefer more snap to my grapes. I also have red Scarlotta... I usually don't like red but these are at least crispy but low flavor
i like the delaware grape. its used in a soft drink Delaware Punch. have you tried that? you can also find delaware grape juice, bottled like wine. its NOT from delaware. there is a copycat brand pennsuylvania punch, exactly the same flavor.
Wow. Seven people mentioned COTTON CANDY in this thread, and COTTON CANDY wasn't even among the grapes tasted. I do keep my eye peeled for excitement among fruit-lovers, and the response to CC has been extraordinary. I will pass that on. Just to make sure no one propagates it by mistake.
I had never heard that about dogs and grapes. I used to sit down and eat grapes with my boy for a good bit. I stopped doing it after I heard that. I wouldn’t worry about it too much if you fed your dog a grape though.
Not a fan of store bought grapes. They all have a underripe sour taste to them that overwhelms the grape flavor. They don't ripe out of the underripe aftertaste either.
Only decent ripe tasting store bought grapes available in store imo are cotton candy and moon drops. These are provided by a private vineyard who ripens them in the vine prior to. They're the closest thing to a quality and sweet candy grapes you'll find. It's kinda ridiculous.
Which grape sounds best to you?
I'd like the muscat one.
Thanks to the person who sent those to you to review!

That would be cool!
I'd love to try them all.So interesting.Thank you.🙂😋💖
I have a friend with a cat named grapes. The kitty doesn't eat grapes, I don't know why the name, but I like it.
It’s exciting to find when otherwise commonplace fruits have cultivars with unexpected flavors!
1) Will they ketchup?
2) Will they hollandaise?
They all sound great!
Man I love grapes.. In Germany we have some in stores sometimes that taste exactly like cotton candy!
Though I like all the fruity variants that also have some crunch!
I love watching fruit man try fruit
I recently had a grape cultivar named "Cotton Candy." Pretty awe-strikingly sweet, but not like an actual, dried raisin.
Cotton candy grapes are my fav!!
Blessed are the grape growers, because without them wine would be 😝
I bought few years ago the cotton candy flavoured grapes in Tesco. It was very interesting.
Was this in England ? If so I’m going to hunt those grapes down
@@thedaniespot Atomic Shrimp (a British youtuber) bought some recently so yes you can get them in England.
Honestly someone needs to get ahold of these and make a wine from them.....
can't believe ur not at a million subs yet smh🤦 dope channel!
The Muscat sounds like the old blue grapes we ate off the vine at my aunt's house in Texas.
I want to try an ethereal grape now
Imagine a wine made from these grapes 🍇🤔😂
4:10 it's the Gros Michel banana of grapes!
I can't remember the name, but the other day I had some small pink grapes. They were VERY densely packed on their stems, and they had the texture and dry/tart skin of a seeded grape, but they were totally seedless.
The word you were looking for with the nose and spice is ‘fragrant.’ It’s like tasting with your nose while eating with your mouth hahaha
great vid btw grape seeds are super healty
Ha ha awesome video. That was by far the most perplexed faces I've seen you make in one video
Glad you enjoyed it
I mean it's prolly a boring answer, but the first time I got some Concord grapes from a farmers market, gurl........ A good fresh Concord grape is insane
Besides the sweetness and flavor timing, what does the Jupiter taste like? Any resemble to other fruits?
Will you do a series of trying edible plants that can be foraged around your area? There are so many more than people assume
I'm not sure, but I think he did an episode on that maybe a year ago. There are some walking trails in NYC where people are growing different plant varieties.
I like the jam grapes, they’re even jammy inside.
My mum used yo make nice grape jelly out of the red grapes we grew in the backyard.
Omg I need to start growing grapes and then crossing them
The sometimes strong extra taste of purple grapes what makes me like grapes.
What a cute cat! Who is she/he? What's favorite food he/she eat!?
That's Vostok, she's the sweetest. She only eats fish varieties of canned food, which must be in chunks.
@@WeirdExplorer Thanks for share!
I know of a wine, that tastes like wine gummy. It’s mostly weird, full of seeds and the skin has a harsh taste. The plant is at least 40 years old. Sadly the owner don’t know the story behind this particular breed.
I had a grape time watching this.
Last night I was wishing you had a grape variation video! Just wow guess 😂
You still have two more wishes Gar Wal. Use them wisely.
Love your videos
As a Mark I thank you on behalf of Mark.
“People who breed grapes are Grape people” - Jared 2021
Congrapeulations for another great Video
I suppose the first was the reliance because it looked like that much more. The grape flavouring taste what you are talking about may be the "labrusca" flavour?
Take a shot everytime he says flavour, flavouring, and like 😂
I wish it was easier to find grapes with seeds in them. I love the seeds.
Happy Thanksgiving
I would love to see every single one of these grapes made as wine
yeah! I wonder if those flavors would carry over after fermentation..
And I would like to sample that!
@@WeirdExplorer or even develop from some reactions with fermentation byproducts!
If I die before eating an ethereal grape, I will be missing out so much and my soul will be disappointed
Concord grapes have that grape
Flavoring.
It is grape time jared! =D
Grapes are also very good for you.
Thanks for informing your pet owning fans about grapes.
Its such a random thing, I was surprised to learn about it.
i like the delaware grape. its used in a soft drink Delaware Punch. have you tried that? you can also find delaware grape juice, bottled like wine. its NOT from delaware. there is a copycat brand pennsuylvania punch, exactly the same flavor.
Lot of buzz about those. I get asked about them all the time.
Hey man, you might hold the actual record for most fruits tasted by a human
I dunno about anyone else, but I sure had a grape time!
I LOVE GRAPE TIME
I had never heard that about dogs and grapes.
@@Jburney131 yeah thats the Grapery company, they can be expensive, but its worth the extra money to have something that doesn't taste like crap.
