It's surreal, absurd, silly and still brilliant. You don't get it at first but see a few more episodes. You'll see more of the same throughout. I've seen these many times since the 70s and still enjoy watching them today.
Python is some of the best surrealist comedy ever done. Terry Gilliam (the animator) of course went on to direct several movies including Time Bandits, The Fisher King, Twelve Monkeys, and my personal favourite, Brazil.
It's a surreal stream of consciousness, usually with no actual point being made. It is made to be absurd. You either get it, or you don't. Some people can't handle it at all, which is hilarious itself :) There are elements of Dada, Surrealism and Absurdism in them. Nowadays, you might even say ADHD.
When I was in high school in the 1970s, one of my friends brought me to an apartment where someone he knew lived and we watched Monty Python's Flying Circus for the very first time. It was broadcasting on a public television station fairly late at night. We had never seen anything like it, the closest thing to it's absurdity was Laugh In. Needless to say, it became a weekly destination. Edit: The animation is done by Terry Gilliam, the lone American in the Python Troupe. He is known for many great films, such as Brazil, 12 Monkeys, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, and my favorite Gilliam film, Time Bandits. You should check that one out, as well as a film co-written by Monty Python's Graham Chapman, Yellowbeard.
Rowen and Martin used to air over here back then, russ. I used to like it. To this day I can occasionally be heard to utter the words (in a German accent) "very interesting".
I spent my teen years watching Monty Python. One thing I learned... never question what they do. Just watch. *No, smoking a joint won't help a bit.* Just sit back and let it happen.
Sat here enjoying a joint and laughing like I did when it first aired, but you are spot on. Classic Python doesn`t need any stimulus to get me splitting my sides.
In 2013, Python and artist Terry Gilliam was hired to perform a composition for the England National Opera, otherwise known as ENO. You see where I’m going with this….
Always up for watching reactions to Python Justin. You have to remember - it's absurdist humor. There's often no logic to the sketches. I love it! You just have to go with the flow and take it all in within trying to think it through.
The opening credits are different for each season, so you should watch each version at least once. They're not very long, and rather amusing. The voiceover saying the name of the show is different each season too. Cleese's voiceover for the 2nd season credits is so ridiculously silly, it cracks me up every time! I also think that the 2nd season is the best overall. Though there are plenty of gems in seasons 1 and 3 too, some of which you've already reacted to.
Now you're finally going to see Monty Python at their best. Monty Python came on at 10:30pm Sunday Night, on our Public Television Channel, Channel 11, in Chicago. I went to bed on school nights at around 10-10:30, but on Sunday night, I got to stay up late, so I could watch Monty Python with my parents. Losing sleep on Sunday nights was totally worth it 😏
Oh man, I'm so psyched!!! I can't believe you're doing this!!! There are certain episodes I'm already excited for you to get to. Season 2 is particularly great, virtually every episode! Season 1 has its ups and downs, my faves of this season are episode 8 and the last two, but there are lots of good ones, and the whole series has great stuff in it. Does every sketch or joke land? No! Don't exhaust yourself! Just wait for them to pounce! And happy you let it run to the very end; there are often things after the credits. They may put the credits in the middle of the episode. It ain't over 'till it's over! I agree: The Funniest Joke In The World is the best sketch in this one.
I was brought up on this as a kid.....I got into trouble at school because I took Monty Pythons big red book to school.......and it was blue!!!! The moment you try to get the point of it all is the moment you lose.....Still funny as he'll.
I love MP! I have everything they ever made but I'd still like you to watch som more MP and get your reaction. The funniest joke in the world is one of the funniest MP jokes.
The purpose of the guy at the beach coming to shore is to say "It's" (the prelude to "Monty Python's Flying Circus") I'm pretty sure all the shows started with him coming out of strange settings to say the same thing.
In classic British history, Lord Nelson died of his wounds at the naval Battle of Trafalgar, and his last words were “Kiss me, Hardy”, telling his loyal first mate to take the message back to his lady. He just didn’t say them being pitched bodily out of a six-story window. 🤣
As a young boy, I'd go out he back room to watch MPFC as my Mum thought is was too silly - perfect for me! My father would take every opportunity to pop out and watch some with me! "Don't encourage him, my mother would say to my Dad. The show inspired me for the rest of my life - I am currently striving to do a very 'silly' comedy act/channel.
keep 'em coming! I found the edits too much to bear, because I'm not familiar with every episode. So I watched a little bit of the episode on Netflix, then came back to watch your reaction - back and forth. Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed the first episode - I recall the first one I saw was about the flying sheep (on PBS back then when they were new to American audiences). It will be interesting to see if you're going to blur out the old photos of nude women in the animations, because there's going to be lots of them!
In British humour, the point is often that there is no point. It's pure farce. MP's excellence came from doing what was least expected. Great skits in this episode.
I could often not see much of the Monty Python sketches because the inset is so small. Is it an option to perhaps swap the video streams so the Monty Python plays in full window and you are in the smaller picture-in-picture stream? Or will that get you into more trouble with the copyright cops?
Please... Please... Do all of them ! And may be a full unedited reaction on Patreon. Well... of course... if this one pleased you of course. But I feel that due to the lack of viewers, it is not going to happened. It's a shame. Thank you anyway to this one.
I don't think Python has aged well. As a schoolboy, when these originally aired, I would laugh til the tears streamed down my face. I had the books and records, now I can't even raise a smirk! I think the films are better.
You have to know a lot of history and science to follow a lot of their skits plus it’s all absurdist comedy. They are so great. Don’t try to make sense of it all.
I noticed you were wearing a Sub Pop t.shirt. How about some early Mudhoney, or Nirvana's "Bleach"? As for Python, keep 'em coming, as it just gets better and stranger!
Turn off your brain, it will make it easier to understand. This is the best of comedy that has very been. British of course, and this from an Aussie. Great reaction mate keep it up and stay well.
It's surreal, absurd, silly and still brilliant. You don't get it at first but see a few more episodes. You'll see more of the same throughout. I've seen these many times since the 70s and still enjoy watching them today.
Thus, it begins. Watch every episode, in order. Every second is precious. You will laugh your butt off every episode.
Classic. It's like being 13 again (one of the good parts).
I love that the absurdist humor is right there from the get-go. My mom, up until very recently, had two sheds. I laugh every time I think of it.
Python is some of the best surrealist comedy ever done. Terry Gilliam (the animator) of course went on to direct several movies including Time Bandits, The Fisher King, Twelve Monkeys, and my personal favourite, Brazil.
Gilliam was born in Minneapolis, MN. He was the only Monty Python member not born in Britain, but became a naturalised British citizen in 1968.
@@Grateful_Dad_54 I remember hearing that the other members referred to him as “the token American”.😆
Brazil is my favourite too, robert. It was excellent.
The joke reads as follows: [REDACTED BY THE MINISTRY OF COMEDIC HEALTH AND SAFETY]
"I'm just allowing this to happen" - the perfect approach.
Greatest television show ever made, as far as I'm concerned.
Arthur "Two Sheds" lol love that bit.

This is WAY better than the episodes you had watched before.

Always a great time with the pythons. It's the equivalent of free jazz or prog rock

PS. I've got a t-shirt with Arthur "Two-Sheds" Jackson.

My study material of choice was "The Brand New Monty Python Papperbok". It made me who I am today! 🤪

Agree, the joke weapon segment was the best part of that episode.

It is never too late to do something for your education.

When the MP guys were trying to figure out a title for their show they originally settled on "It's . . ." before finally going to use MPFC.
Following on from Spike Milligan.
