This is how you play banjo. Everyone always sticks to old Appalachia style when this instrument has much more range. Hearing the overlapping notes gives it so much depth, almost like hearing more than one instrument. This particular piece really gives you the feel you're traveling with hope, love it.
I think this is called something like "open string plucking". The banjo is a very daynamic instrument and is also a snare drum. Also, there are fretless versions, and one can exploit microtones to add even more dynamics.
It’s called “claw hammer” style and predates American banjo playing, it’s African (yes, the banjo came from Africa). The other style is “three finger picking” or “Scruggs” style after the late, great Earl Scruggs. One of the things that makes Steve Martin so unique is he can play using either method.
"It is said, that as we lay on our death beds not long for this world, one perceives a mighty host of angels descending, bathed in gloriously brilliant white light, approaching to carry us home, and all the while, unspeakably beautiful music is heard... I'd accept just ONE angel, and THIS song." Steve, from one old Douglas D. disciple to another; you really touched me with this post. Mike
interesting to think about that, iv always known steve from his movies when i was young but just recently found out how good he is with banjo and the thought struck me that people could have like 10 different perspectives of who this guy is and what he does without knowing any of his other hidden talents!

It’s so cool to see and hear Steve Martin playing in such an informal setting. Love his playing. The first time I heard of him was on the Mike Douglas show in Philadelphia in 1977(?). He was sharing the stage with Ellen Burstyn, Judy Collins, and Lee Strasberg. I was a roadie for Judy Collins and was watching from the green room. Lee was showing how he trains actors to stay relaxed and was amazed at how easily SM able to do that.
@@lindairvine7679 I’m very familiar with that song but it’s not clawhammer that’s three finger Scruggs style and that’s what I’ve always seen him do. Here he is playing overhand/clawhammer which is a completely different style and I’ve never seen him do it until I saw this video.
I could do the percussionist part on a Thermos. 😆Sir you have always made me laugh at my lowest. Thanks 😊. And I've been in a bluegrass phase and here you are. STELLAR!

I highly doubt you will see any of these comments. You've brought me a lot of joy with your comedy. But as a musician myself, I am highly impressed by your playing. The best thing I can say to you as an old honky tonk pedal steel player is this: You totally rock Steve!
Brilliant- eerie- complex structures!! Well-Done, Mr Steve! I just finished your Audio Book- “Born Standing Up”! What an Inspiring Ride!!!! I have even more respect for your journey now!! Wishing you continued joy & creative success!
He is so completely underappreciated as a musician. Comic genius sure, but a thoroughly dedicated, hard-working craftsman as a musician. He's been honing his craft over a lifetime and it shows. Just wonderful to listen to. 👍👍👏

I think it sounds Appalachian regardless.
Old Appalachian style does sound good though. Something about it just sounds right.
I think this is called something like "open string plucking". The banjo is a very daynamic instrument and is also a snare drum. Also, there are fretless versions, and one can exploit microtones to add even more dynamics.
Clawhammer style banjo has been used in old time Appalachian folk music for much longer than the modern bluegrass style has been used
