- We’ve got an urgent repair job to do so we can get our customers big Caterpillar D11 Bulldozer back to work! We have a pair of blade lift yokes off the D11 Dozer with worn out bearing surfaces that need repairing. We show the step by step process of the repair starting with machining down the worn surface using the lathe. With this being such an urgent job, we use Stoody 965-g hardfacing welding wire to build up the surface which will give a hardness of 55HRC. Once the weld has cooled down we machine the yokes back to spec in the lathe.
In this video we are using:
- Hafco TM-26120G Lathe
- Weldmac WHP-2.5 Power tilt positioner
- WIA 500i Weldmatic welder

Some "interesting" sounds were made when machining these hardened D11 parts 😅 Hope all your ears are ok! And it's crazy to think how big these parts look spinning in the lathe but they look so little on that massive CAT Bulldozer 💪

That’s quite a screech

From Mrs CEE 😁
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering You as well Mr CCE , you are a great machinist 👌 Cheers from USA 🍻

Yesterday the RUclipsr Dirt Perfect had an employee wearing one of your shirts, and the comment section was raving about it. You guys truly are highly respected globally, and genuinely deserve it. Your videos are the best part of every Friday.
@Cutting Edge Engineering Australia The best person on RUclips at filming without a doudt!!!
I'm 79 and I operated a similar business, albeit on a smaller scale, in Saskatchewan Canada for over 30 years. I really enjoy the fact you don't edit out the parts where things don't go as planned ie: harmonics in your huge "tuning forks". Those of us that have done these repairs know everything does not go as hoped and good on you for showing us the difficulties and how you overcome them. Keep up the good work. After you retire people will let you know how important you were to their daily operations...not so much when you're actually operating the business.
You never cut corners and Always look out for your customers. You make parts better than new!
To be fair, the out-takes are just as enjoyable as the serious engineering vids. Also proves that Kurtis is human, and not just a metal-working ninja !!!
ninja? another mis usage of a word. What does Ninja mean Japanese?
Image result for ninja
Ninja (忍者, aka shinobi, meaning "those who act in stealth")
@@araofmadisoncasey4247 are you a plonka ??? Or just a troll..??? The informal meaning of ninja is to have attained serious skill levels. Look it up, prick !!
@@araofmadisoncasey4247 Ok we get it you think you're cool for going "um ACKTUALLY"
(You're not cool. Stop it.)
Despite the time constraints you cut no corners, and (on camera) appeared as calm, cool and collected as ever. Well done !
I'm thinking of the stress the owner of these massive machines must be under when urgent repairs are needed and the machine shop delivers within the strict time limits, I think CEE has a customer for life from now on in. Thanks guys, great video.
They're probably fine. I imagine their stress is like Fry in Futurama when he drinks that 100th cup of coffee and reaches full zen and gets super speed
Time is money when one of those machines goes down.
One would think so, but a lot of time they quickly forget when someone else is 15 cents cheaper.
@@cullenmiller8170 Local and smaller operations will never forget and be forever grateful - big companies can quickly forget when the new manager knows a guy he use to use....
As an ex maintenance superintendent it depends if it’s a pm related issue or found work …….. while this machine is down it will be having other critical maintenance done to it …. Maximizing down time to increase up time in the future …… it’s all part of the game
I'm always impressed with how much you know about mining/excavating equipment and their repairs. Quality job and great camera work from Karen as well!
Oh wow! I watch your channel too! Although your work is on a far smaller scale, it’s so fine and intricate and just as entertaining to watch.
I truly love the outtakes at the end. I've been following your content for years now, and the outtakes are about the only time one ever sees him crack a smile. Do more of that, Kurtis.

@@realemonful you know you could always not watch them? 😂👍
I think your welding skills are often overlooked due to how proficient you are on the machines (lathe, mill, etc), you do an outstanding job with that MIG gun.
Very well put, sir!
"I do have a mandrel for this, but I actually cut it up for something else..." Oh dear, Kurtis.💩 I wish I had $5 for every time I've said something like that, then I wouldn't need so much pension money! 🤣
Sympathetic resonance can be a hard thing to eliminate. Well done Kurtis job is a good one. Karen and Homey, being the back room support. Thanks to all 3 of you for making Fridays a great day 👍
Brake drums ring badly as well. A leather strap works. I grinned when Curtis went for the banding strap. I was expecting leather.
Leather straps smell too much like a new car to be used like that 😂 🤪
It’s been 20 years since I have ran a lathe, but I can vividly remember the unique feeling of that surface, that was “smooth” yet rough at the same time, from the harmonics. Thanks for the memories.

Super stoked to see the local companies like OZ Welding Supplies hooking you up with merch. In the US you'd have a new Miller and Speedglass helmet already. It's a shame local Aussie companies don't invest more in great channels and tradesman. Great work again!
Every video is not only entertaining but very instructional. Thanks, Kurtis for letting us see you hard at work. The projects you do are just amazing and they show the amount of skill and professionalism that is required to get these jobs done. Respect, sir
Hey there, Curtis, love the channel as always... I was wondering... have you ever done a show-and-tell about the different types of inserts you use or anything of the sort? I know it's far and away from what you normally do which is do your job and film as a secondary... but I've found myself wondering more often than not what exactly the inserts (for example the WNGA Ceramic Insert) are all about and what the various lettering conventions are. If you could do this, I'm sure that more than just I will be ecstatic to watch. Have a fantastic day!
hey mate we haven't done a video on the types of inserts but will definitely add that to the video list, thanks for the suggestion
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Brills! Much love to you and the Missus (and Homey of course) from Washington State!
Quite interesting! Heard many machinists mention harmonics, but this was a fantastic example!! Also even hearing that high pitched one at 26:13 was brutal lol
So was it the harmonics that caused the preferred bits to not bite?
@@steven.h0629Think about it this way: the Harmonics are the result of vibrations. When it vibrates, it causes small movements.
So sort of, yes.
Another top job job there Kurtis, if you're going to get a rush job it's better if it's an easier one. Some pretty awesome gifts for everyone this week, this is one channel where I like watching the unboxing portion because of the cool and interesting stuff you have sent your way.
It honestly blows us away the generosity and thoughtfulness of our viewers! Very grateful for such a supportive community 😎👊
Regarding the howling, I've had decent luck with surgical tubing. Pretty cheap, stretchy and works surprisingly well. You would need the green stuff to drive it, but wrapping the tubing around 3 or 4 times in figure 8s would probably make it silent.
I'm a retired machinist as of last fall. My experience with vibrations has led me to using any old rubber hose ( like an air hose) wrapped tightly and secured seems to work very well. I also noticed threaded holes on the forks, a plate could have been bolted on using all 4 holes, just my thoughts.
Great videos and I too agree the ending out takes are great ! :)
Good idea. I’ll try to remember it, next time I have a high pitched screamer.
Your skill, talent, & knowledge BLOW MY MIND. I hope your customers know how lucky they are.
@jamesarnold6059 - strongly agree.
Dammit, I love hardfacing, and bearing surface replacement in particular (hey, don't kinkshame me!). Too many people will try and tell you lasers are the future for deposition, and having worked with lasers for 30 years - long live arcs! MIG deposition, done well, does a tremendous job for so many applications. This video shows you just how.
CEE make my Friday mornings complete. Keep up the good work!
Brilliant video again Kurtis and Karen. When you look at the design, the materials and production values that have gone into just a "small" part like that, you wonder how they can sell a complete D11 for as little as $1.2M. That new carbide insert seemed to be the dogs whotsits. Always amazes me how different grades of carbide can make such a difference in a cut.
Because Caterpillar is not in the heavy equipment business - they're in the spare parts business.
@@crunchysupermanSame with just about every manufacturer. Have you noticed how car manufacturers are always advertising incentives to get your car serviced at main agents' workshops?
@@davidstewart4570 better example would be those newfangled all-LED headlights. Sure, it is only 1200 bucks extra on top of standard issue xenons, but god forbid you break them in a fender bender, it will be 4grand for replacement part. Plus labour.
Economies of scale; if you're producing dozens or even hundreds of these dozers a year, it'll take significantly less time for each part's setup. Also, they probably cast and machine parts to size before heat treatment and the final precision cut, which really reduces how much material you have to remove.
Love how you take these dead line jobs in your stride.
Throw in a professional video to boot, that's teamwork.
I must say I admire your patience and stamina with all that welding and turning considering the size of these parts.👍👍
TAFE needs these videos in their curriculum for real world machining and servicing demonstrations. No bullshit, only relevant information without product bias and real-life examples of problem solving on the job. Kudos again Kurtis and of course it's all because of Karren for the amazing videography, it's purposeful and lint free.

I'm sure there is no pressure at all when you know that they have to ship first thing tomorrow morning. Great work Brother. Thomas, Mississippi, USA!
Time to burn the midnight oil!
I won;t lie - I'm about 70% here for the machining, 30% here for the outtakes, and 100% here for any scene with your dog. He's just the best.
Hey Kurtis, in the future try rapping the shaft of the yolk with a 4" X 5' strip of rubber the thickness of a inter tube. It should help to deaden the ringing when machining, like when turning a brake rotor. Good Luck!! Keep the vids coming, enjoy them all and some times watch them a second time. Thanks
Given the huge elastic modulus of the steel, and teh huge mass of steel compared to the elastic modulus and mass of rubber, I think it would not make the slightest difference.
@@keithammleter3824 it is all about taking energy out of the system. If you leave it vibrate on its own, it will amplify in natural resonant frequency. If you let it waste in something like rubber, you might get lucky and get rid of some harmonics.
I would've liked to try just another strap, but near the of it, or just tack weld a small bar across it.
I agree with John. When turning brake drums the shape of the drum causes nasty harmonics which will result in a herringbone pattern like Curtis had. We use big rubber belts to absorb the vibrations and it makes a much cleaner cut which is nice and smooth. The bigger the brake drum the bigger the rubber belt we use.
That’s also an old watchmakers’ trick to get those last few tenths on humming parts. Sometimes it’s pitch instead of rubber.
Wow, loooved wire-to-torch camera transition @15:00. Felt really organic in scope of these videos.

Same, it’s perfect when your working on something and one size is just a bit to loose so you can look and compare between metric and standard to see what the next tightest size is.
It finally struck me today, your welding is impeccable! To have no voids with that amount of material added on. Such skill. This of course coming from someone with no physical experience, just a general understanding of the process. Great job and thanks for sharing you three❤

Thank you for another truly well made episode of this week's work, excellent both in production and content. Thank you also for your ever so good patience getting the description shots done, it must be very trying when you have so many outtakes during the filming. Funny to see how impatient the Safety Officer Homeless can be with your packages in the mail, thinking everything is for him. He is well and truly spoiled, but that is half the charm. Rush job, but no compromise on quality 👌
Is that artefacts of chatter at 14:16 ? Didn't know these types of hard surface repairs were possible, learned something new as usual. Cheers.
Customers that can afford a D11 are good customers.
You would think that but the managers dont get their bonus if a machine is down or they are over buget. See the problem? Kurtus says they need to be on truck in morning, meaning they forcing him to do half ass job.
Excellent job team CEE. I've said it before, but the best thing about CEE is that although the jobs are massive, all the techniques are scalable down to us home gamer types. It's also interesting to learn little snippets about heavy equipment, an area I am not familiar with. So thanks Kurtis for the excellent machining demos and Karen for the great production. And thanks Homey for just being Homey.
You are right about the scalability of the techniques and it is also good to see no matter the size of the lathe that you can have issues with inserts and feed and speed rates.

Do not bother but today, the best of the video is the face of the puppy when he has opened the first package and is with his paws on the table waiting for the second. LOL.
Thanks for your invisible smiles Karen.
Not even done watching the video and I have to stop to say WOW, excellent camera and editing work! This is so much fun to watch with all the great camera angles/close-ups. I really loved the footage of that pass starting at 10:25. Beautiful work. Kurtis does good work too, incredible in fact. Hey, I have a question? I am always curious of the weight of the pieces you are turning. The inertia of that spinning mass is terrifying and fascinating at the same time. Do you know how much those weigh? Every part you turn I'm guessing the weight. I'm not sure if some of your audience knows or realizes how heavy those parts are, myself included. Would be an awesome piece of info for your fans. Keep up the great work! Love everything about you guys and your channel.
the fact he uses the Gantry crane to carry most of the pieces he works on give you a really good clue they are more then 100 pounds🤣
You both make what you do look so easy, i can't imagine how hard it is and produce the high end quality products both physically and for our entertainment, Cheers guy's.

Observing how you are always so very good and careful and professional to use all safe practices in lifting all these heavy parts, I can't help but recall the few times I have happened on similar work being done in places like India squatting barefoot and barehanded in the dirt with next to no lifting tools, welding helmets, gloves or anything really at all present for protection and safety. hehe, nice "time lapse" on the second weld up and grind... just ZIPPPP and done =P I always appreciate how much actual time goes into each step, and how neatly and unobtrusively you compress time in the video. I've seen on other channels the joke on a t-shirt that says "welding god" with the word welding crossed out and the word "grinding" written in. Kurtis illustrates the other end of that spectrum. Great video as always.
(another welding joke is "grinder and paint make me the welder I ain't, which certainly doesn't apply here either)

Awesome job mate. Customer will be stoked to get them back so fast.. does anyone do metal spraying anymore? Used to be the bees knees but I reckon it’s a waste of time, in my opinion. Thoughts?
I agree and have seen far too many metal spray repairs failed, delaminating and breaking down causing more cost for the customer 👎 There's a lot of repair methods out there and that's not one I would choose
It's not a "fix everything ". There is a place for it.
How hard is that stuff, same with using a sleeve?
Customer: “I need these TODAY!” Kurtis: “Is this your idea of a YOKE?!!”
It's impressive to see materials that size with eccentric wear on them - the forces acting on them must be pretty serious!
First of all. Great job repairing it! But could you potentially not just switch them with each other on the machine? That way you had a whole other side to wear if the wear only occurs on the one side?
I'm aware it might not be the optimal solution. But perhaps in a pickle?
