I used to live near Middleham, also famous for the horse riding stables. I have always had a soft spot for Richard 111and do not support the bad press. Each year the locals have or had a church service for him. I am still upset his remains did not return to York. Nice video.
Thank you Cynthia. I certainly think Richard was no worse than any of the other monarchy of his day.
@@jamesstroud8833 You got every bit of that right, friend.
Lovely to listen, love history, and love to see the castle, thankyou
Lovely footage and history lesson. What I could have done without is the shakesmeare quotes. The 'my kingdom for a horse' is the most egregious lie. The King was offered horses on the field, and he said 'G-d forbid I retreat one step. Today I will die a King or win." Nothing in the benighted play is free of slander so ridiculous only very unsophisticated people could believe such a character could exist. Nor did he. King Richard III became the scapegoat for tydder crimes. Everything they accuse him of, they did themselves. Anyway, it was great to see all the footage of my favourite castle. (Sheriff Hutton and Barnard Castle are in the top three). Happy Holidays to you!
Thanks for watching. As well as loving history we also love Shakespeare so I'm afraid we couldn't resist! At the end of the day Shakespeare was a dramatist not a documentary maker.
@@goodforthesoul3050 I really enjoyed the detail in the video. I am very familiar with the castle so it was pleasant to visit again. I used to love certain of Shakspeare's works. I could probably come up with a W.S. quote for any occasion. But when I discovered what he'd done to King Richard III, who was in truth betrayed on the battlefield by sworn allies, for the sake of a usurper, and who died a hero's death--it soured me on Will completely. My personal reaction: all his books, leather-bound and fine though some were--are out of my house. A dramatist he may have been, but also a propagandist. But on the castle history: it interests me very much because I am descended from the Nevills. I found them in my family tree, not knowing who they were. To visit Middleham was a great experience; I hung around the area for over a month, exploring the nearby castles, Bolton, Raby, Richmond, Barnard Castle and dear Sheriff Hutton. Middleham is very special and quite impressive even as a ruin, it is possibly my favourite castle of them all.
Merry Christmas!
@@YorkistRaven merry Christmas to you also
Loyaulte me lie!😢
Thank you for the history and showing us, in such detail, the castle! 👍🏼
You’re welcome ☺️
Well! Just brilliant. Thoroughly enjoyed that detailed history of this location. This REALLY pulled me into the feel of what it must have been like in that era. Thank you for a job well done 👻💕👻
Thank you
Great work ~ thank you!
Thanks for watching!
I visited the castle recently and found it very atmospheric and interesting. The whole town is charming and well worth a visit.
We agree!
Wow❤
So the Castle was destroyed mostly by the Civil War? That would explain the big gaping holes: cannon shot.
The East curtain wall was blown up on purpose to make the castle useless. What a pity. 😢
Can anyone tell me the name of the song that begins at about the 2 1/2 minute mark? Haven't heard it in ages and can't remember the title.
Love genuine Castles! The later Castles that got converted to palaces or manors? Not the same thing.
It's a shame it's so far gone. A few million could actually restore parts of the Castle IF you could still find enough stonemasons to work on the project and then another issue is the weakness in the walls themselves. Seen it in German Castles, moss and lichen quickly breaks down stone. I doubt anything will be standing of that Castle in 100 years.
It has stood a very, very long time, in spite of being slighted and robbed of stone. Grit millstone is very tough stuff; and I felt the mortar in the rubble fill inside the dressed outer stones: it is still rock-hard.
I have the Nevills on my ancestry tree.. That's so exciting to me
