  • In this video, Dr. Nilesh Chordiya (Surgical oncologist, SSO Hospital, Mumbai) will inform us in detail about the drug which is being talked about a lot in social media and press i.e., ‘Dosterlimab - The Cure of Cancer.’
Dosterlimab was tried on MMR deficient patients with locally advanced rectal cancer which was shown to give a complete response to all the patients it was used for. So, is it really the cure for cancer?
Dostarlimab is a part of immunotherapy. The traditional method of treatment of locally advanced rectal cancer is giving chemotherapy with radiation followed by surgery and then more chemotherapy. This treatment method has proved to give a significant number of patients a long-term survival and potential for cure as well.
However, it is being said that Dostarlimab avoids the need for any of these treatments, which comes at a cost. The Dostarlimab drug full course costs around 1 crore. We also do not have any long-term studies to say this drug cures colorectal cancer. The patient number in the trial where dostarlimab was tested was only 12.
The majority of the clinical trials performed to find the efficacy of a drug are usually tried on hundreds of patients and they are done in phase 3 trials where they are compared with standard treatment and follow-up these patients for years.
This is a very exciting achievement, as till now no drug had shown 100% efficacy in clinical trials but still, it is a long way before it can be used for the patients.
