2020 was a VERY tempting year for upgrading, but I have decided to stick with my Lumix G80, and selection of vintage lenses until I know that camera inside out. I like the challenge of helping a camera punch above its weight. And if 4K wasn’t an industry distraction, I would say the C100 is one of the great cinema cameras in its class still - shot some of my best work on it. You simply must do a video on the XL-1. The memories!
@@forewarnedfilm very tempting...C100 is perfect for youtube now, I've upraised some stuff to 4k with it, but carefully so. A few years ago a RUclipsr made a video about how cameras have reached a point where all needs are met and that the only thing we can expect from that point on is more bells and whistles. It's not that the evolution in technology is bad in any way, but the only logical reason to upgrade is if the gear is holding you back. So that's my metric. It certainly helps to mitigate gear lust for the newer stuff, but now I find myself pining for quality older gear as they become more affordable :P
Still occasionally using my Canon 550D - that camera that opened up full manual control filmmaking to the masses and actually made the "film look" achievable! The A7SII and Original Mavic Pro was like the ultimate combo only a few years back. I desperately wanted it for the longest time, and only ended up going down the GH5 route due to more useful features for my needs.
GH5 was a smarter choice for sure, I needed to match the other A7sii's in the fashion shoot so it wasn't an option, the fact it's ff wasn't important to me until i started shooting vintage glass. Now it's just nice the lenses are 1:1 with no crop or loss of light factor, but other than that, MFT or super 35 all day long.
@@MarkHoltze Super 35 size is the sweet spot for me. I use all my vintage (Pentax K) glass with a focal reducer on the GH5 and it gives me around that equivalent sensor size/FOV. That combo is very versatile and gives rather film-like results.
Great video as always Mark! Happy to see the a7sii getting some love in 2021. It is still such a solid camera. It’s essentially an a7siii without slowmo. I love mine. Shot a feature with it in 2019 and planning to shoot a web series next.
Love this vid. I still use my Canon 5ds. And no plans on stopping. Actually just bought another new for 900. Just because they are " older" doesn't mean they aren't great. Some people like a new ferrari. Others like a 65 mustang.
I still use the original Sony a7. She's still a beast, if you treat her right. Nothing more to say. You really inspired me to work with vintage lenses only and it's totally worth it. :)
Awesome video! I've got 5D Mark II, it's still a great camera, no intention upgrading it at all. In the end it's the lenses that matter and if it's shot with a full frame sensor then all great!

Hey bro, at the moment i use a cheapo camcorder (Canon Vixia HF R800), I am looking to upgrade when time is right and i have money. What camera do you recommend under lets say, 1200 dollars? Is 4K really that needed? I shoot 60fps most of the time, i love the look of 60 and i sometimes tend to shoot 24. Is there any good 4K60 camera that's cheap that's not a phone or action cam? All i know are the Panasonic GH5 and BMPCC 4K, I am mostly a small RUclipsr but i am making video work for people. Or is 1080p60 good enough? If so, which cameras?, again i do mostly shoot and export at 60fps. I want is to be able to have good bokeh (but dont need full frame), have more control over colors, overall just far sharper and detailed video and decent low light.
Great video. Can you recommend a fast (1.4, maybe 1.8) wide angle (20-24mm) vintage lens that would go well with the sony a7sii? My Sony a7r II served as my main portrait camera (with adapted manual focus lenses exclusively) since November 2015! Now I'm switching to autofocus and I jumped ship to a Panasonic S5 with Panasonic 70-200. I paid $3200USD for that a7r II but I'm spending less than that for my entire new kit including grip, extra battery, and lens adapters for my Canon FD lenses. May not adapt my Canon EF Tlit Shift lenses... almost 8 years!
Do you think the Sony A7R II is a good buy in 2023 used? Thinking about buying one used since it's full frame and 1080p60 and 4K30. Will it work with B4 lenses? There's a few vintage ENG cameras, such as the Sony DXC-M3A, that have B4 mount lenses. They used a connector for powered zoom and auto iris though and I don't think it will work with the camera.
@@MarkHoltzeShoukd I get the A7sii though. I want to mostly shoot video but I want a good photo camera. I was happy with the photo quality of my a6000, so I assume the A7sii is the best choice. Plus the SII can do 1080p at 120fps.

I still MISS my a7sii in 2021 hahaha (laughter turns into tears). I took for granted how nice it was to not have to rely so much on lighting for video with the Sony. I'd trade 10 bit color in my panasonic for the continence of the old a7sii (literal statement). Great vid 👍
It's true, but lighting unfortunately .... is almost always required to help really balance out a scene. Shooting with natural light is dope as hell, but never having enough lights to craft the scene is a struggle.
Shooting vintage lenses and cameras are all I have with the exception of my cameras that help make my videos. Hahaha! I love my vintage lenses and what they offer. Happy New Year Mark!
I shoot video; not stills so that’s where my focus is. I don’t print photos ever, if I did I wouldn’t blow 12mp images up too big, but you can go pretty big. You just can’t crop in too much or over edit. You don’t but an A7sii if your focus is photo, the Rii is a photo focused camera and has the MP to back it up. S series on alpha, video focused R series photo focused. :)
hello. I using the sony a7s mark 2 and using a sony 24-70 G series. I have face detect on and I am continuous auto focus . Focus area is set to wide and and have set it to centre. Real big issue I am having is that background shudders, focus hunting whenever the subject moves during an interview. Its not noticeable on the viewfinder or EVF but when I get back to my rushes you can notice and turns the shot. I have had to revert back to manual focus for the time being. Any ideas what is going wrong ?
So I guess It's ok to admit BUYING a used RX100 mkII in 2020 ? (Camera from 2014, cost 1850 Kronor, which is like 220 US dollar) Well that's what's in my pocket anyway, I really like that little ting. BTW I recently improved a few of my m42 adapters, improved you ask ? Some of the cheaper ones, had a shiny (Anodized) aluminium ring inside. With a self adhesive flocked back vinyl mounted to this ring, I actually got better contrast with some lenses. Especially my telephoto Komura 200mm f3,5 and my Komura 300mm F5. Let's hope for a better 2021 everyone even if we are off for a VERY bumpy start. Cheers from Sweden. Yeah, good video Mark, I really got to stop writing long comments in 2022 :)
The cameras are like children. I have a XT30 and a Canon T7. The Canon T7 is approaching retirement as DSLRs are weaker for adapting lenses. It's a nice loaner camera and I may very well keep it just to teach my future children the basics of photography if that interests them. Like lenses, I grow attachment to my most used gear. They are more than just tools. The XT30 has a long life ahead of it and I look forward to our adventures. Great video as always Mark, I always look forward to your content! 🙂
Sold my a7s ii got the Komodo just went back to fx3, the a7s ii helped me out so much I wish would’ve kept it , whatever produced the best outcome don’t go for the hype
I let my Sony A7R 36 megapixels go to my daughter. She was using a Canon EOS. I thought she need an upgrade. Bought a Sony A7M2 because of my age! needed the steady shot inside stabilization for hand held shots. Yes, there is other ways around the hand movement most of the had held shots are snap shot or just a test shots before I go to the tripod. I don't do movies yet! Landscape photography is my hobby. Lately I am using the Helios 44-3. A Christmas present. The only upgrade I would make is for more megapixels. But I ask myself do I really need the extra megapixels?
I’m still rocking a a7ii and a7s If I upgrade I want a bmpcc4k do you recomend that? Still on the fence between no issues a7c or great video whit large files no autofocusbmpcc4k., since I already have 8bit low light I’m leaning to bmpcc4k
Great video. I'd like to add reason NUMBER 0 to my list is "Budget". If I had the budget, I would like to upgrade if the new camera has new features or improvements worth upgrading.
Been using the A7sii for the past three years and still very happy with it! Like you, I only use adapted lenses. The 4k image is great, even in 8bit with slog2. The 1080 is a bit soft imo, especially 50p, which I use a lot on weddings. So eventually I will upgrade to a full frame camera with uncropped 4k50. Probably the A7siii 😁
Mark it’s good to have the old stuff.... If it does the job why replace it. I have a canon m6 and a Fuji xt3 no problems hence far with adaptors, Got a slight problem with my Mir 1 with an m42 Mount with an :39 ring inside makes focussing wheel stiff ideas...
I have a feeling an A7Sii will be on the cards to have Astro modified for use alongside my A7iii. I am shooting Astro with vintage glass and loving it!
Maybe it’s weird colour grading for me is so subjective. It’s also very hap hazard depending what I’m going for or what I need to match. I’ve thought about it for awhile, also my way might not be someone else’s way. I over think this into submission I think 😂
The cameras I have most fun shooting with (and I, too, use a wide array of vintage lenses) are all from the 2004-2012 period, so… I guess you can see why I agree with you wholeheartedly when you say that you don't upgrade for the sake of upgrading. :-) Cheers, and a very happy 2021!
Hi Mark, I recently purchased an A7Sii that's barely been used. I have numerous Super Takumar and Minolta SR-7 series lenses I'm excited to try out. Can you give me a non-biased recommendation on adapters? Thanks in advance!
I’ve only ever used fotodiox. Not sponsored, not affiliated....they just work. I haven’t used their minolta adapters but I’m sure they’re just as good.
Because you already have an S1H, the a7S II serves a great role as a B camera, particularly for low-light situations. If you didn't have the S1H, then I would recommend upgrading to the a7S III because it's a far more complete video camera than the a7S II. The a7S III can be your A camera.
@@austin_hutto This is how we do it lol. Nice Mate! I've been searching for XL to EF adapters, i want to put some of my EF mounted contax lenses on that thing.
@@MarkHoltze I have the a7s2, a73, and a7s3, and your videos introduced me into the world of vintage lenses. Thanks for the great videos and content. Greetings from Maui. :)
2023 viewer here. I've been looking at used A7sii versus a used A7iii. As far as I can tell, the A7iii has a couple main advantages: battery life and better autofocus. Does anybody feel like these things are worth the extra $400? I do shoot some weddings and I'm interested in shooting 4k s-log, but looking for a deal on an all-around workhorse. Open to anybody's thoughts comparing the two.
The question should not be, "Why not upgrade?" The burden of proof does not lie on the photographer! Instead, ask "Why should I spend even more of my money in exchange for a few 'new and improved!' features that may or may not of use?"
Well I have the A7s mk1 for more that a year and I use it only with vintage glass, even for events.(30 min video limit removed with the playmemories tweak app) It is a workhorse, it never let me down, but the grip is just to shallow, and with bigger lenses it is awful. I also want to invest in some AF lenses, and I am worried it won't worth it since the a7s has basic autofocus system. These are the main reasons why I am thinking of an upgrade to a never one like the a7s2 or r2 but those are still too expensive considering how old they are, they are in the same price bracket in my area like a Canon Eos R, so I think I will go Canon route. The better specs combined with the ability to use much more affordable EF and even EF-s lenses is too tempting. Not to mention the seemingly DSLR like grip of the R. Anyway I will probably keep the A7s as well. :)
it's just cutting on action, straight cut, but the motion of me in the frame makes it feel seamless. Your eye is distracted by the sudden motion you almost don't notice the cut. :)
What made the Mark ii is IBIS, no real need for sticks! Next on camera apps like Digital Filter no need to carry filters and holders! Bottom line October 2015 and it was 7 years ahead of other makers even today Oct 2022 others just getting mirrorless started and their lenses. It was the day when ISO 6400 was max without extending and noise control in SW was just starting. And Capture One was ahead of Lr for only $30 vs Ps and Lr ea $800 and each new update! Still after 7 years ahead of others for still or video and now $1K a great deal.
If it works and it's good enough. It's not worth the hassle getting a new one. For technical fields like astrophotography though there's an endless upgrade path where you can always get better.
Damn you Mark! First with the vintage lenses, and now this. My disposable income is dwindling before my eyes. The fact that I already have an extensive set of Sony lenses and an opening for some 'light video work' not to mention the fact that this body should work well for astro... arghh, I can't not buy this thing now. 😂
Familiarity with cameras has become underrated in the current upgrade cycle. Learning a menu system on a hybrid can be a nightmare, and even worse is memorizing them from on multiple cameras.
i did 5 takes of it and thought the silly ending was the best version lol. Ask me a year ago when I was was less self aware of being on camera and i would have gone for the wooden one lol.
This is more of who I am, goofball...but it’s not something you can pull out on a first date. Pull it back, like layers of an onion only not so smelly. ;)
I wanted to upgrade my EOS R but I’ve decided I’m not. Unless I made the money making video work to upgrade. When I made the money, if they still do the job, I’m not upgrading 😌✋🏼. Thanks for helping me save money and instead made me thing about work on my craft 👍🏼👍🏼
Of course! It’s that easy ;) /sarcasm. Unfortunately a lot of newbies to the craft who watch RUclipsrs sell them the latest cameras really don’t understand that it’s not the investment of gear that makes you better, but time. Time is a lot more expensive, can’t be rushed and requires patience. A lot of people now just want that internet clout ;) Ps buy my LuTS they will make you better ;) /sarcams
To upgrade or NOT to upgrade? That is the question.

Amen! Happy New Year Mark.
Happy new year!
Shooting vintage lenses and cameras are all I have with the exception of my cameras that help make my videos. Hahaha! I love my vintage lenses and what they offer. Happy New Year Mark!
12mpx for still photo convinces you? Do you print large size? How does it handle that? Isnt a7rii better all around?
It’s not a very good auto focus system I think being the critical problem. This is one area Sony has really improved on 10 fold

So I guess It's ok to admit BUYING a used RX100 mkII in 2020 ? (Camera from 2014, cost 1850 Kronor, which is like 220 US dollar)
Well that's what's in my pocket anyway, I really like that little ting.
My Sony A7S II have a very slow focus. Can you Help me please?
The auto focus you mean?
@@MarkHoltze yes! Auto focus is very slow.
Great video as always!
Beautiful editing mate.

I tend not to get rid of tech - so I couldn't possibly be any good at advising on when to change up.
me either, i hold onto it for decades so when eventually becomes en vogue again, I'm ahead of the curve ;)
I’m still rocking a a7ii and a7s
If I upgrade I want a bmpcc4k do you recomend that?
Still on the fence between no issues a7c or great video whit large files no autofocusbmpcc4k., since I already have 8bit low light I’m leaning to bmpcc4k
4k is awesome value. Raw video....free copy of Resolve. Not sure the A7c will add much to be honest
Thank bro
By the way I’m a tru fan!!
We’re all in this together mate! 🙏
and so do many others, that's why it still holds a significant portion of it's MSRP today on the used market.
Can't go wrong with an Siii upgrade no doubt
Soooooooooo I did buy the a7siii BUT, I’m looking at picking up a a7rii because for stills that camera is still crazy relevant!! 😏
42mp right? The rii
@@MarkHoltze yes sir!!
Another great video
Mark it’s good to have the old stuff....
If it does the job why replace it.
I have a canon m6 and a Fuji xt3 no problems hence far with adaptors,
Got a slight problem with my Mir 1 with an m42 Mount with an :39 ring inside makes focussing wheel stiff ideas...
I have a feeling an A7Sii will be on the cards to have Astro modified for use alongside my A7iii. I am shooting Astro with vintage glass and loving it!
Nice!
astromodified a7s2? not good idea. You know something about internal IR led?
Great video! Maybe you can do one about color grading sony footage? How you maximize the strentghts and minimizing the weakness
Maybe it’s weird colour grading for me is so subjective. It’s also very hap hazard depending what I’m going for or what I need to match. I’ve thought about it for awhile, also my way might not be someone else’s way. I over think this into submission I think 😂
Can you please help me remove vignette while shooting 4k using 18-105mm e mount Sony lens
The 18-105 is an apsc lens I believe. Are Yoü shooting on a FF camera? What camera specifically?
The cameras I have most fun shooting with (and I, too, use a wide array of vintage lenses) are all from the 2004-2012 period, so… I guess you can see why I agree with you wholeheartedly when you say that you don't upgrade for the sake of upgrading. :-)
Cheers, and a very happy 2021!
I WANT A DEDICATED VIDEO ON THE XL1
In the pipe ;) just figured out how I can transfer the footage and I’ve wanted to make it in a long follow up to the Sony Handycam video
@@MarkHoltze i grew up filming with my dads XL1, filming with my friends. connecting RCA to tv to rewind and playback footage.
Started with my dad yashica 50m 1.7, then started investing into contax zeiss and pentax super takumar and canon fd, and I love my vintage lenses. Your videos are awesome! Thanks for the great videos and content. Greetings from Maui. :)
@@austin_hutto Maui! Paradise mate, your Sony collection is a thing of beauty! Can you get a good amount of lenses on the island?

Oh yeah, the XL-1 was so cool back then
what do you mean, back THEN? ;) jk mate, I know exactly what you're saying.
@@MarkHoltze hahaha. They were really cool. easy to use on those torso-mounted steadicam rigs. =)
watching this in 2023, i think i love it too

This camera is still very good, I will even use it for my final college assignment
@williamnatan7919 best of luck! 🎥
where did you get that hat?
Ten Tree :)
Still rocking a Nikon d7000, love that camera. Curse you for showing that Pentax 300 4 again.
The 3 has much better auto focus, worlds apart. I do think the three has the better value today.
@@MarkHoltze Thanks. Much appreciated
The question should not be, "Why not upgrade?" The burden of proof does not lie on the photographer!
Instead, ask "Why should I spend even more of my money in exchange for a few 'new and improved!' features that may or may not of use?"
Much better, but it’s just too big for a title lol. I agree fully however!
Just psyched to have a Lumix Gx85 and a shitty T100. Idc how old they are, they both take great photos and the Gx85 captures great video 🤷🏻♂️
I love my Sony A7(s) mark 1. It is the closest to a digital Olympus OM 1.
Yep. 100%. Nothing to add. I mean, I keep using my a5100 after all.
5100 GO!
Canon xl still rocks as the coolest design on the shelf…
Hell yes, just watched oceans 12 and one of the 12 was rocking one. Design for days! 😆
0:57, why did this look like an awesome editing trick?
it's just cutting on action, straight cut, but the motion of me in the frame makes it feel seamless. Your eye is distracted by the sudden motion you almost don't notice the cut. :)
@@MarkHoltze thanks for replying! My eyes were trying to tell me that you brought the camera to your face then rotoscoped it afterwards!
✊
I wanna see a video of you using that old xl1!
Definitely seeded that in this video... ;)
If it works and it's good enough. It's not worth the hassle getting a new one. For technical fields like astrophotography though there's an endless upgrade path where you can always get better.
What’s in your pockets? Haha 😂 that was great!
popular culture (on youtube) is fair game right? ;) lol.
😆 don’t buy it. But if you find one cheap it’s not the worst camera ever. 😆
I like to upgrade, better EyeAF is the main reason.
it's a powerful tool, lucky i can't use it at all with my vintage lenses so it's irrelevant to me. Falcon FOCUS is what they should call it ;)
Canon XL-1 is a good on camera prop.
NIKON D700 OLD Enough?
I'd say so ;)
Familiarity with cameras has become underrated in the current upgrade cycle. Learning a menu system on a hybrid can be a nightmare, and even worse is memorizing them from on multiple cameras.
Lmao the laughing in the beginning
i did 5 takes of it and thought the silly ending was the best version lol. Ask me a year ago when I was was less self aware of being on camera and i would have gone for the wooden one lol.
@@MarkHoltze I love how your channel has evolved in that way!

Lusting after new gear is better than actually BUYING new gear. "Wanting is better than actually HAVING." It's an old proverb.....
It's very true actually. It's like once you get it, the attraction is lost, not entirely, but a lot of it.
It’s so enticing I get it, but if that camera is paid off and you’re still making money with it...that’s all profitsssssssssss
Love my S2. Menu is still horible
We all know that throwing money at your gear will make you a better photographer.
A lot of people now just want that internet clout ;)
