In Great Britain a whole chunk of the monthly salary is paid back immedialetly in messing charges so the soldiers never see their total salary. Not long ago British soldiers were considered to be amongst the worse paid in the western world, so no one joined up leaving the army short staffed. They had to scrap some regiments to find the money to give the remainder a raise! Britain went down from 110,000 to 80,000 soldiers. They give senior officers a good pay rise every year because there are only a few of them.

I greatly doubt the accuracy of these figures. The distribution is not mentioned by rank and in many countries, the salary would be very much lower for the hoi poloi and concentrated on higher officers and elite forces( ie the ones responsible for keeping the generalissimo in power.
