- Arik Brauer, civil name Erich Brauer (1929-2021 in Vienna), was an Austrian painter, graphic artist, stage designer, singer and poet. He is considered one of the main representatives of the Viennese School of Fantastic Realism.
In the song "Reise nach Afrika" (Journey to Africa) he reflected on his journeys by bicycle through Europe and Africa, which he undertook between 1951 and 1954.
Arik Brauer lived most of his life in Vienna and Israel, but between 1957 and 1964 he was in Paris. There, H. C. Artmann had encouraged him to publish his songs written in Viennese dialect. Brauer's singing career reached its peak in the 1970s. For him, the success came as a surprise and was unexpected. He had never seen himself as a pop singer, but as a painter. With songs like "Sie hab'n a Haus baut" and "Sein Köpferl im Sand" Brauer became one of the fathers of Austropop in its politically committed orientation.
Spotlight was a music programme for young people broadcast by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) between 1968 and 1978. It was the equivalent of Beat Club or Musikladen in Germany.
