I currently live in Tennessee, but I was raised in Delaware. My dad used to dock his boat in South Jersey, and we sometimes drove through Salem. Always thought it was such a shame to see all those old Victorian homes boarded up and in disrepair in Salem, Bridgeton, Millville... That aside, I always liked South Jersey. The beaches and boardwalks are AWESOME!
I grew up in Salem. I lived on Carpenter St. growing up. Also lived on Thompson St for awhile. Than moved to Oak St. Now I live in the State of Georgia.
I was interested at looking at an open house on the beach in Salem but all the crime data is so offputting. I've never heard of a shanty town near the water having such high crime rate, ,the population is only around 5k for god sakes. Should I cancel my open house?
Your camera was doing some strange things in this video, showing a lot of green, pink, and yellow. Like starting around 2:49. I don't know what that was all about, and I didn't see that in your Bridgeton videos at all. Anyway, I love Salem, but this was sad. Just like Bridgeton, I haven't been there since before the pandemic. So this was interesting. Several years ago I was walking down Broadway, taking pictures. And suddenly a guy who had been hiding behind a hedge or whatever, came out, and then got right in my face and accused me of taking pictures of something that I was NOT taking pictures of. I argued with him for a few minutes, and then he suddenly dropped it and walked away. Thanks for the ride.
I worked in Salem in the late 70’s and early 80’s . I came back to do the census in 2020. I was shocked to see how far this city had fallen in disrepair. And it was dangerous banging on doors . I guess when the glass houses closed it took the city with them.
Grew up on Broadways then raised my daughter on Carp. Salems demise on the hands of the shady freeholders and government. How can people make a living or get out when the bus don’t run past six there’s no jobs they want Salem to self destruct regentrification
I think you made a wise choice pulling this off in the winter. If you did it on a Saturday night in the July, you might have caught a stray bullet, got car jacked, or plain jacked up. My in-laws lived Hancocks Bridge south of Salem for over 30 years so I know the city well enough. Within the last ten years, My brother-in-law has bought several of the huge very old houses on the North end (Market district) of Salem on route 45. He's living in one and fixing up the other two. He's a very hard working man but I question his choice of investing in real estate in Salem. The houses are awesome but require a lot of work from decades of neglect. Fortunately, he's only been burglarized once and never had any problems other than that. I've done a little driving around out of curiosity and saw houses just rotting away with huge holes in their roofs. Only a miracle will bring this city back to it's former glory. Beyond Salem is beautiful with Mannington to the North and Quinton to the East. Lower Alloways is nice as well.
Salem really is not as bad as ur describing. He would have been able to drive down any street at any time of day or year and the chances of a random crime occuring with him as the victim is very very very low. Noone bothers you like that. I grew up on the north side of Philadelphia and moved to Salem. Salem is really nothing in the grand scheme of things and compared to other places that exist not too far away (Philly,Camden) Salem is a suburban housing development compared to those two cities
Right down 540 onto 45. I live 3 miles outside Salem. Charming little town. Especially Carpenter St and Sinickson St. Oh and the Apartments are very art deco and very welcoming. The residents are very charming and very helpful as well. Great place to visit. Forgot to mention the Chinese joint there also. Very delicious fishy smelling bourbon chicken. Has a decadent slightly green slime that mixes well with dry rice. The penicillin is a nice added bonus 👌
@@johniorio7951 Yeah its a great town 👍. Two shot one dead a month ago or so. It could be a nice little town and it was at one time. I-295 is what I've been told was the demise of Salem. Crazy is a asked a Salem cop once what the deal is the town is only half mile long. Why so much shootings? He said they have no idea street cred mostly and the thing that baffles everyone including the police is they all know and went to school with each other. But to end on a good note a amazing Italian joint just opened in Fenwick Plaza. Fazios its called. Fresh hand made pasta ravioli everything hand made.
If you had to do something for Salem, what would it be??.....I'm not busting your balls, I would like to know, because I am looking to do something down there...i'm old, I am rich, and I'm bored with my life......plus i know salem county real well.
@@johniorio7951 Absolutely nothing lol unfortunately everything is gone. Couple decent food spots but nothing exceptional. Pennsgrove on the other hand has Dipolos. Not that place is 👍👍👍
@@johniorio7951 I got it. You can drive down Sinickson or Olive Streets then into any of the apartment complexes. See if you get shot at lol. Sorry seriously there is absolutely nothing in Salem anymore. Maybe try Fazios I definitely recommend that. Maybe that dude can be the keystone of a comeback for Salem.
@@dhooter Im italian ...Fazio's sounds good...but I was talking about doing something more spiritual, like a church...i am tired of food service, and catering...not looking to make any money off of Salem, as long as I have my truck and do some remodeling work here and there......I am prayin to God about it....I Know one thing, thats that salem needs to have something better than the olive street scene.
GOODJAWN.....if God handed you a million- dollar winning lottery ticket, but said you got to spend it in salem, what would you do??? Thanks for the reply, I'm dying to know what you would do.
Very interesting question thank you for asking. A lot comes to mind. I'd like to spend a good amount at some locally owned businesses. Maybe a bar, buy everyone a few rounds to celebrate lol... but the two most important things to me is a good school for the kids and better care for the homless and mentally ill. I guess I'd call a local ministry to help me contact everyone but also ask them how I can help.
Born & raised there, but no longer live there. I might go back, but I would be choosy as to which neighborhood. I think the Avenues might still be nice. Market St also. Parts of Broadway.
They built a condo building and selling two bedrooms condo for 78,000. Like I willing to be in the middle of nowhere for a while and then sale it. It on carney point let me know about that side of the neighborhood
So Carneys Point is right on the Delaware River and the DE memorial bridge will take you from Carney Point directly into Wilmgton DE or to i95. Philly is prob 40 min or less depending on traffic. Salem is set further back into the country. Carney Point has easy access to the city, the shore, and the country so you wont be in the middle of nowhere as long as you drive. Its a small quiet town too. Sounds like a good deal to me.
Salem's been trashed and it's a shame but we got 4 liquor stores in a 10 mile radius and taxes up to our eyeballs and they wonder why it's in such a state....people working a full time job can't afford a house, alot of salem is gated communities and a motel thats not even a minute from a police station and people are shot and killed at on a weekly to monthly, sometimes daily. Murphy's run this state into the ground! Sorry rant over...I love salem county but nj is losing people by the minute
Salem, Burlington, Camden, Cumberland, Cape May counties pretty much all suck. Basically South Jersey in general is sort of shitty. If you want nice beaches Monmouth and Ocean are much better and definitely way more affluent.
It's definitely not like that out here lmaoo ppl out here are trying their best to get themselves together. Eventhough we have a few hard headed people we are very innocent ppl with honesty lives. No salem doesn't look like shit but we're working with what we have and teaching our kids to be different from past mistakes and events. Salem almost there. The state hasn't cleaned any of this mess up but when they do well rebuild salem.💯

Winter is also the best time to visit Salem. Late spring to summer are not great. Shooting season starts when warm weather comes.
